Kael did not bother replying to the Cardinal’s first letter, and he hoped that it got his message across.
But the cardinal was adamant and decided to play ignorant. It did not take long before Kael received another strongly worded message from the cardinal about the first ignored letter.
[Grand Master Kael,
I am sure you received my previous letter. But if you did not, please allow me to repeat myself. Sir Juniper has been selected as the hero’s teacher, and the former slave you chose needs to redeem herself at the temple. So please make preparations.
Sir Juniper is on his way to the town where you are currently located, so please meet him and discuss the hero’s future education.
If you ignore this letter, then we will take it as you becoming an obstacle to the hero’s future and take action. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂
From,
The Cardinal and the Temple]
Kael wanted to ignore this letter and pretend he had never seen it before. But it was hard to do with the temple openly threatening him.
"Ugh, so irritating. Should I just declare war on them? No, that would just make the situation worse."
Since Seraphina would awaken as the saintess soon, Kael was going to train her to rule over the temple and control them. That way, the future would be much safer, and their future journeys would become easier.
But to do that, the temple needed to exist first. So Kael could not declare war and destroy them all.
Not that he realistically could.
Just as the tower had Grand Magicians at the top, the temple had Holy Knights. They were comparable to each other in strength.
Currently, there were 10 Grand Magicians and 12 Holy Knights. But unlike magicians, who did things because they wanted to, the Holy Knights were dedicated to the goddess.
Having them as enemies was not Kael’s idea of fun.
Especially their captain. He had been a pain to deal with in the past, and Kael wanted to avoid him.
"Fuck! Well, at least they did not choose a Holy Knight as the hero’s trainer. I would have no way to get out of it if that was the route they went with."
That was the only silver lining in this whole situation.
Unfortunately, this letter and the temple’s warning were not something he could ignore any longer. So Kael decided to deal with it immediately.
He would head to the town tomorrow and make sure Sir Juniper resigned from his post as the hero’s teacher candidate himself.
...
"Kael, are you sure you want to head into town alone? I can accompany you if you want."
Iris told him for the third time as she watched him head out. Her eyes kept looking at him worriedly, which was something new for Kael.
Usually, he was the one worrying about others.
"I will be fine. I am the Grand Master, so it is not like many things could hurt me. But I should warn you about something beforehand- I likely will not come back alone. The temple has forced my hand and made me accept the person they chose as the hero’s teacher. But it will be a temporary arrangement. Explain it to the kids and tell them not to worry."
Kael informed her, and Iris nodded.
He knew she would do a good job explaining what was happening to the kids, but Kael had still left behind a magic recording.
Since he was leaving in a hurry, that magic recording would give them the details of what was happening and what he planned to do.
Kael caught a glimpse of Seraphina and Leon before he exited the house, and he took a deep breath before he started heading toward town.
"Ugh, I really do not want to do this. But I guess the sooner I get rid of the temple’s spy, the better it will be for everyone involved."
He doubted the temple would remain quiet even after this, but at least things would calm down for a while.
...
The town had changed a lot after the gladiator arena was destroyed. The slave market in this place was suffering, and so was the economy.
Not that Kael felt any guilt for what he did. Anyone who depended on such dirty income deserved to struggle.
He ignored the state of the town and headed toward the inn where he could sense Sir Juniper’s presence. And it did not take him long to find Sir Juniper either.
The rowdy man was sitting in the middle of the inn, and he was currently surrounded by a lot of people. They were looking at him with wide-eyed admiration, which Sir Juniper was happily soaking up.
"Sir, is it true that you are the hero’s teacher chosen by the temple? But we heard that the Grand Master was chosen-"
"Ha! That fool does not know a single thing. That is why the temple decided to send me. It is their way of telling the world that I am far better than the Grand Master."
People clapped as they watched Sir Juniper boast. The louder they were, the prouder Sir Juniper looked.
Kael waited for the right moment to announce his presence, but there seemed to be no right time.
Sir Juniper kept boasting about himself, moving on from insulting Kael to telling stories about how he defeated monsters and other creatures.
Kael had enough of this, so he snapped his fingers and a bucket of water appeared above Sir Juniper’s head.
Most people noticed the use of magic, but Sir Juniper kept boasting about himself without even noticing what was happening right above him.
Then the bucket tipped over and drenched him with water. He let out a gasp before turning around with an angry expression.
"Who did this? Who would dare treat the hero’s teacher this way? I will have your head-"
"Tsk, the temple sure is declining if this is who they sent as Leon’s teacher. Or maybe Sir Juniper was far too intoxicated to notice me using magic. In either case, does this not disqualify you from becoming Leon’s teacher?"
Kael masked the irritation in his voice, and Sir Juniper noticed him immediately.
All color drained from his face, and he immediately stood up and gave a small bow.
"G-Grand Master Kael, you are here? Since when have you been here? You should have told me you arrived."
Sir Juniper’s attitude changed completely as soon as he noticed Kael’s presence, and everyone noticed and started to gossip.
