’What does Leon want? Why does he keep looking at me?’
Kael had noticed Leon’s glances for quite a while, but he had no idea what the younger hero wanted. Since Kael did not know, he decided not to take action.
He watched Seraphina and Leon train until it was time for lunch, and then he headed back first to make preparations.
Seraphina realized how late it was once Kael started to move, but he stopped her and sent her back to practice.
"I should come as well-"
"No. You should practice your mana control and attend your lessons. Leave the cooking and cleaning magic until you have mastered the basics."
Kael told her, and Seraphina looked a little sad. So he patted her head as a form of reassurance.
Leon’s eyes sharpened from the other side of the training ground, and Kael finally understood what had been souring his mood.
"You are doing great as well, Leon. Make sure you listen to your teacher and absorb as much as you can from her."
The expression on Leon’s face finally eased, and Kael quickly headed back. He somehow managed to keep his expression neutral until he reached the kitchen, and then he let out a sigh.
"I did not realize that Leon wanted compliments from me as well. He must see me as his teacher. No wonder his mood was bad..."
Kael had been praising Seraphina because he wanted to build her confidence. But he had forgotten that he was currently in the past and that both Seraphina and Leon were still young. They both needed equal care.
But now that he knew, he would make sure to give them both equal attention.
...
The training trio came back after an hour, and Kael used his magic to wipe away their sweat before setting the table for them.
He also used magic to reheat the food before they started eating.
The atmosphere was pleasant, and Kael was having a good time spending it with people he cared about. So naturally, it also meant that something had to start irritating him.
This time, it was a letter that fluttered through his window and landed in front of him. He reached for it, but Iris stopped him by stabbing a kitchen knife through the letter.
A yellow smoke escaped from the letter, indicating that the magic used to enchant it had finally bled out. Iris looked proud of how quickly she had acted.
"It should be safe to read this letter now."
She told Kael, but he shook his head before reaching for the letter and opening it.
[Respected Grand Master Kael,
It recently came to my attention that you decided to take in a former slave as an employee. I can only assume that it is for the hero’s sword training.
As much as I appreciate you going out of your way to do this, I would also like to inform you that it was not a good decision. The hero needs a proper teacher who can shape him, and a former slave will not do.
As such, the temple has selected the best candidate possible to become the hero’s teacher. Sir Juniper is about to become a sword master, and he is highly resourceful. He would become the best teacher for the hero.
Please send the former slave to the temple, and we shall help her recover. And please, for the dignity of the hero, have him learn under Sir Juniper.
From,
The Cardinal and the Temple]
The letter was just as rude as Kael had expected.
He knew the temple would not approve of Iris, and they would want to appoint their own person as Leon’s teacher.
But Kael was not going to allow such a thing to happen.
He put the letter down on the table without bothering to hide it. It was not like anyone else could read it anyway, but his expression told the others everything they needed to know.
"Is this bad news?"
Iris asked, clutching another knife in her hand.
Kael had a feeling she would head out to hunt down the sender of the letter if he admitted to anything serious.
So Kael decided to give a neutral answer to her question.
"I expected this letter, so it is not a surprise. However, it is irritating. Apparently, the temple does not trust my judgment and wants to appoint a new teacher for Leon. They also want me to send you to the temple for ’recovery.’ I have no intention of following either ’suggestion.’"
The temple’s words were not mere suggestions but orders. An ordinary person would not be able to ignore them.
But Kael was not an ordinary person.
He was the Grand Master, someone who did not have to answer to anyone.
But even he had rules he needed to follow.
"Is this...from the cardinal? What are you going to do now?"
Leon looked a little worried and guilty. His self-blame could be seen clearly on his face.
Kael did not like that expression, so he immediately reassured the hero that it was fine.
"You do not have to look so worried about this letter, Leon. This letter is irritating, but you are not the reason it is here. Rather, the temple and the cardinal do not like me or the magic tower, so they are trying to make things difficult for me in any way possible." 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
Kael reassured Leon, but the hero still looked worried. The best way to deal with the mood was to change the topic.
Thankfully, there were other people around to do that for him.
"So, what are you going to do? Do you want me to step down as the hero’s teacher?"
Iris asked in a tense voice. Kael could read the worry in her expression, so he immediately placed a hand on her shoulder to reassure her.
"You are the best teacher Leon could have at the moment. You are a sword master, while Sir Juniper is nowhere close to your level. He is also a noble, and not a very talented one at that. From what I know of him, I am sure he bought his fame."
At least, that was what had happened in Kael’s last life. And he doubted things had changed with this rebirth.
The three in front of him still looked worried, but with Kael’s reassurance, they slowly started to relax a little.
"Alright, if you say we do not need to worry, then we will take your word for it. But tell us if you need help."
Iris told him, and Kael nodded.
But realistically, he knew he would not need any help.
