"Why do I need to inform you about my arrival? The temple told me that you were someone on the verge of becoming a sword master. Someone like you should have sensed me coming quite a while ago. Unless..."
Kael left his words hanging in the air, and Sir Juniper immediately tried to take advantage of it.
"S-Sir, it’s nothing like that. Of course I sensed you as soon as you entered. Please pardon my ignorant question."
Both Kael and Sir Juniper knew that he was lying. But the reason Sir Juniper was not worried about being found out was simple - he did not think Kael was going to make a scene or point out his mistake.
But that was where he was mistaken.
"Hmm, I am afraid your performance so far has not been good enough for me to take your word for it. Do you mind if I test you?"
The reaction was immediate.
"Y-You cannot do that! I am a representative selected by the temple. Who knows what would happen to you if you touch me? Don’t you fear making enemies of the temple?"
Sir Juniper name-dropped the temple as naturally as he breathed.
But one thing was clear from his panicked reply - he was high-ranking enough within the temple’s connections to casually invoke their name.
’Tsk, this person won’t be easy to get rid of. If he’s going to be such a pain, then I might as well use him.’’
Kael let out a sigh before deciding to go ahead and use his powers anyway.
Even if this man had connections, he was still just a pawn for the temple’s agenda. No one was going to pick a serious fight over him.
"Are you threatening me with the temple’s name? Now I am curious. Would the temple really help you out? Or will they side with me and call my test valid? Aren’t you curious to find out as well?"
Kael asked before using his powers on Sir Juniper.
The man clutched his head as he instantly fell into hallucinations. He took out his sword and started slashing at invisible monsters.
"What is this? Where did you take me? Do you think this will scare me? I will show you how powerful I am."
The man yelled as he hacked away at the invisible monsters.
Kael created a barrier around the man to trap him inside and prevent him from attacking the people around him.
This lasted for a whole minute before a bell rang and the barrier around Sir Juniper broke. The bell’s sound also disrupted the magic Kael had cast on the man.
The only object capable of such a thing was the holy bell. It was a special device created by the temple to boost their holy power and neutralize basic spells.
Because of this, Sir Juniper was saved. But his mental state was still questionable.
"Y-You monster! Did you want to kill me? You used magic on me - the hero’s future teacher."
The man asked as he grabbed his throat and coughed to get rid of the tension building inside it. Everyone was looking their way.
Unfortunately for Sir Juniper, Kael had a perfectly valid reason not to take him back.
"Sir Juniper, you failed a basic test. I am afraid I cannot hand over the hero’s training to someone who cannot even withstand a basic mental attack. This outing was a waste of time."
Kael’s voice was loud enough for everyone to hear, and the more they listened, the more Sir Juniper panicked.
Finally, Sir Juniper narrowed his eyes and spoke in a desperate voice.
"Grand Master, I know that you do not think highly of me, but I want to propose a deal that will help us both. I have a way to get the temple off your back for good."
Sir Juniper was not a trustworthy person, but Kael still found himself willing to hear him out. And there was only one reason behind it - the possibility of getting the temple off his back.
Kael’s interest helped Sir Juniper relax a little, and he immediately tried to press for more advantage.
"Should we head somewhere more private?"
Sir Juniper likely wanted to protect what little pride he had left. But Kael had a better solution. He waved his hand, and the area around them was covered in an opaque barrier.
Once they were alone, Kael pulled out a chair and sat down. Sir Juniper did not have a chair, so he remained standing. But that humiliation did not stop him from proposing his deal.
"I know that you are troubled by the temple. The temple has no desire to leave the hero’s education in your hands either. They will send someone else if you send me back now. And that is why I have a deal for you. I can act as a fake teacher for the hero and fool the temple for you. In return, I want to be officially recognized as the hero’s teacher."
Sir Juniper was stubborn and still insisted on getting his way. But his solution was not half bad.
Honestly, Kael could see it working in the short term.
But he still could not bring himself to trust this man, so it was useless anyway.
"I have to say that it’s an interesting offer..."
Sir Juniper looked up with a smug expression. But Kael immediately crushed his hopes.
"...but I do not believe you have the skills to fool the temple. I am not going to make a deal with you." 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
Kael dropped the barrier and decided to leave Sir Juniper in the inn. He was sure he would receive a well-drafted letter from the Cardinal soon, but Kael was not worried.
Especially if this was the level of the people the temple was going to send.
Besides pissing off the temple, there was one more reason Kael behaved this way toward Sir Juniper - he wanted to test the man’s temper.
As expected, Sir Juniper was short-tempered and willing to do anything for glory. So Kael expected him to do something stupid soon.
’And that would give me another advantage over the temple. I am sure the temple will be forced to back down if their candidate causes a mess.’
Kael would give Sir Juniper one day to come up with a plan. After that, he would force the man to act according to his own expectations.
Whatever route Sir Juniper took, Kael already had the destination mapped out.
