It was time to head back home, but there was a lot of debris around them. So Kael decided to use his magic to clear the way, and Iris followed after him.
His plan was to head home without much fuss and put this incident behind him, but when have things ever been that easy for him?
He had just exited the destroyed stadium with Iris when he felt someone trying to use magic on him. A small device floated in front of him with the purpose of cuffing him, but Iris decided to use her sword as a bat and hit it hard.
The device got destroyed and Kael did not even have to move a muscle.
Iris looked proud of what she had done, but not everyone was impressed by her display of strength.
"What do you think you are doing? Your case will become worse if you resist. Now, don’t move and come with us into custody to pay for the crimes you committed."
The city guards had been called to calm the situation down, but there was little they could actually do in this situation.
After all, they were incompetent and the only reason this force existed was to give a cushion to spoiled young nobles who had no ambitions or will to succeed their families. Most of them were ignorant of the world as well and were drunk on power.
That was why they came after Kael. They did not recognize who he was.
"What do you think you are doing? Do you have a death wish? If so, then allow me to fulfill it."
Iris told the guard as she held her greatsword ready to hit him. It made the guard flinch and he instantly became defensive.
"D-Do you have any idea who you are talking to? A-And how dare a criminal like you threaten me? I will make sure to have you both locked up for the crime of destroying the stadium."
The guard was shaking but he still kept his pride. Even Kael felt some admiration at this point.
But Iris wanted none of this guy’s nonsense and she decided she had enough of his bullshit.
"Stop talking or I will close your mouth permanently."
Iris threatened and the noble actually took a step back because he was afraid of her. But then he pulled himself together and realized that there was no reason for him to be afraid.
"You will regret saying this to me. Now stop resisting and come with meeeeee-! Ahhh-!"
Iris threw her greatsword toward the guard and the guard froze in shock. The greatsword bounced off a shield, protecting the guard. But the experience was traumatizing enough for the guard to freeze in place.
Anger slowly overtook the guard’s rationality and Kael decided that they had played around enough.
"Iris, it’s fine. Let’s have this guard escort us for now. I will clear the air about what happened with the chief myself."
Kael assured Iris but she did not look happy that she had to pull back. She recalled her greatsword but her eyes kept their unhappy expression.
"Are you sure you don’t want me to end his life? It would be far easier to deal with."
Iris asked, and the guard shook at her words. But Kael placed a hand on her shoulder to tell her that it was alright.
"It’s fine. I want to clear your name and get you a clean record for your new life. Besides, I need to report what happened here anyway and talking to the chief would resolve the situation much faster."
Kael reassured Iris and she finally calmed down and put her greatsword away. But she did not look happy with the decision.
She looked at the guard, who was a whole foot shorter than her, and the guard looked intimidated enough to take a step back.
"Y-You both better try and make this up to me. Otherwise, I will make sure you both get thrown in jail for 10 years minimum."
The guard said with a smirk on his face, but even that was not enough to hide his fear.
...
Kael and Iris ended up following the guard to the station, but it was not a quiet ride.
In fact, the guard kept boasting about himself the whole time. He kept telling the other two how great his family was and how much influence he had over the guards and this city.
Neither Kael nor Iris gave the guard much attention, which made his mood even worse.
Finally, they arrived at the guard station and climbed off the cart.
"Enjoy your last few moments of being free."
The guard told them before they headed inside. They sat in the interrogation chairs as they waited for the guard to call his superior.
Iris was getting impatient but she still managed to sit still for now. It was a remarkable improvement from her usual behavior.
"Do you want me to take care of that guard’s superior? It should not take long."
She asked and Kael shook his head.
"There won’t be any need for that yet. The guard is just a spoiled brat, but the superior should have enough sense not to make an enemy out of me."
Kael told her and they waited a little longer.
"-telling you that they are the problem. We should pin it all on them. They are inside here."
The guard’s voice was much louder this time and the door finally opened, letting the superior in.
"Hmm, let me see the faces of the troublemakers who destroyed the stadium. You all are in so much trouble-"
The superior started to speak in a scary tone but he faltered halfway once he noticed Kael’s existence.
Whatever color remained on the man’s face drained away and his body language immediately changed from a harsh one to one filled with respect and flattery.
"S-Sir, it’s you? O-Our young guard must have made a mistake. Please forgive him this once since he did not know any better." 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
The superior immediately recognized the youngest Grand Master even without Kael showing him proof. It was a testament to how famous he was.
While the superior showered Kael with praise, the guard who brought them there watched with a bitter, confused look.
"Sir, what are you doing? Those people are criminals. If we don’t do anything, then the other nobles will-"
"Shhh! Do you even know who that man is? If you don’t, then keep your head down and don’t say much. We cannot afford to make an enemy out of him."
