Apocalypse: I'm the Landlady of the Refuge

Trudging through the wind and snow, everyone arrived at the location reported by Wu Xun.

By the time they arrived, Wu Xun had already directed members of the patrol team to evacuate the people on that floor and seal off the room where the zombie was discovered. Xia Li was also there with the Guard Team members providing support.

Wang Youde, who had already arrived, was outside the residential building, guarding the evacuated survivors to prevent any disturbances.

Seeing the evacuated survivors shivering one by one in the wind and snow, Ji Wanwan fell silent.

She looked toward the other members who were quickly following her: "Xingxing, Xiao Jing, I appreciate your escorting them to the central building for shelter from the snow."

The central building was well-heated and housed a staff cafeteria; at least they would not have to starve or freeze.

After speaking, she glanced meaningfully at Wang Youde and strode into the building.

Arriving at Room 26, from a distance, Ji Wanwan could hear the zombies’ roaring.

She quickly approached and saw Xia Li guarding the already shattered room door. A broadsword was laid across the front of the door, keeping the zombies trapped inside.

Seeing Ji Wanwan arrive, Xia Li nodded toward Wu Xun’s direction, "I’ve got this side covered, Old Wu is over there; you can ask him about the details."

Ji Wanwan gave a slight nod.

As a Zombie Hunter, Xia Li could easily handle these few ordinary zombies. With her guarding this side, Ji Wanwan naturally felt assured.

She nodded slightly in acknowledgment and swiftly moved over to where Wu Xun was.

At that moment, Wu Xun was checking each household on that floor.

Seeing her approach, Wu Xun stopped what he was doing, handed it over to his subordinates to continue, and respectfully walked up, "My Lord."

He briefly reported the situation at that time to Ji Wanwan.

Early in the morning, before dawn, both the patrol and Guard Teams had received an alarm. The person who raised the alarm was a survivor living in Room 16, right below Room 26.

Zheng Yuan, the patrol team member closest to the location, arrived first and questioned the alarm raiser.

The alarm raiser mentioned that Room 26 was strange; people inside had been screaming all night and were smashing things around inside, making loud crashing noises.

They had gone upstairs to knock on the door, but the person in Room 26 did not open it. Instead, they banged forcefully on the door, scaring them and keeping them awake all night. Thus, they had no choice but to press the alarm in hopes that the base would intervene.

Zheng Yuan immediately went to Room 26 after hearing this.

After knocking and announcing his identity, the survivor inside Room 26 still did not open the door, instead attacking the door in a very agitated state and emitting inhuman roars.

As a member of the patrol team, Zheng Yuan had a keen awareness of zombies.

The noises and the cries instantly made him think of zombies.

To confirm his suspicion, he signaled the survivor from Room 16 who had come upstairs with him to stay silent. Once it quieted down inside, he punched the door, creating an opening.

"Roar!!!"

Accompanied by the loud noise of the door breaking, the zombie inside was startled and lunged toward the direction of the door.

Through the small gap, Zheng Yuan and the survivor from Room 16 instantly saw the scene inside and the thing that lunged toward them.

It was indeed a zombie!

Luckily, Zheng Yuan was cautious enough not to break down the door completely but instead opened a small gap to see inside.

His face turned ashen, realizing the severity of the situation, he immediately took out his walkie-talkie and called the team leader.

However, the survivor from Room 16 was not as calm.

Upon seeing the ferocious zombie, he screamed miserably and fell to the ground, instantly drawing the attention of many on the same floor who came out to watch.

Zheng Yuan wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead and urgently whispered, "Quickly go back to your rooms, don’t stand and watch!"

His tone was both urgent and fast, and coupled with his patrol uniform, his words had a certain deterrent effect. Those who were initially peering out saw that something was amiss and quietly retreated back into their rooms to secretly observe the situation.

By then, the walkie-talkie had connected. Hearing the disorderly noise, Wu Xun immediately asked, "Xiao Yuan, has something happened on your end?"

Zheng Yuan responded concisely, "A zombie was discovered in the type-three residence at block F26..."

Upon arrival, Wu Xun quickly evacuated the survivors on that floor and sealed off Room 26.

During this period, the zombie inside the room completely shattered the not-so-sturdy door. Had Xia Li not arrived just in time, there might have been casualties.

Ji Wanwan furrowed her brows as she got a rough understanding of the situation.

She looked at Wu Xun, "In recent patrols, have you noticed anything unusual?"

Wu Xun shook his head, "Since the last disappearance, I have increased patrol intensity, not sparing even the undeveloped areas. We haven’t found any abnormal people or events in the past half month."

Ji Wanwan then looked towards Xia Li nearby.

The latter had been keeping his eyes fixed on her and immediately shook his head when he saw her looking, "Everything is normal on my end. The Guard Team has people stationed at the borders daily, and we would not miss any zombie nearing the base."

Ji Wanwan felt a lump in her throat and silently nodded.

Whether it’s Xia Li or Wu Xun, she felt reassured by their handling of matters. As long as they reported no abnormalities, it could be confirmed that, at least on the surface, there were no issues with the base.

She turned her gaze towards the zombie in Room 26.

How could this family have turned into zombies out of nowhere? Was there a connection to the previous disappearance?

After a brief thought, she made a decision, "Xia Li, take them back to the lab at the central building.

Old Wu, you and Brother Wen together check the base personnel, especially those who had contact with this family. It’s crucial to check for infections.

Seniors, Haozi, gather all recent movements of this family for analysis, and report any anomalies immediately.

Mom and Dad, the personnel previously headed to the central building need to be settled, please make a trip there.

Brother Kai, come with me to investigate the scene."

Everyone agreed and began to get busy.

The overlooked Wang Youde raised his hand, "Lord, what about me? What should I do?"

Ji Wanwan smiled faintly, "You also come with me to investigate the scene."

Thinking he had been forgotten, Wang Youde immediately followed with a laugh, "Alright, alright!"

Ji Wanwan briefly assigned the rooms for Zhou Kai and Wang Youde to investigate, while she herself pretended to inspect around, actually querying the System, "System, are there any residual energy fluctuations?"

The System checked, "Almost imperceptible."

The result was as expected, and Ji Wanwan didn’t press further, "System, what’s your take on this matter?"
