- Chapter 1: The Wedding Night
A young man clad in fitted martial attire entered swiftly—it was one of Rhaegar’s most trusted retainers. He moved straight to his lord’s side and whispered a few urgent words into his ear.
Rhaegar’s expression shifted.
He cast a glance toward Caelith, pausing for the briefest moment in silence.
"I have urgent business to attend to," he said at last. "Return first. I will come to you later."
Without waiting for a reply, he turned and strode out.
As he passed Lucas, his steps slowed for a heartbeat.
"The words you spoke tonight, Lord Ostenton—I shall remember them. Trust me."
Then he was gone.
The door closed like a final blow of danger.
Silence settled once more over the private chamber.
Caelith remained standing, her gaze fixed upon the door. And in that quiet instant, something within her felt... hollow, as though a space had been carved out and left unfilled.
Lucas returned to his seat, his eyes resting on her.
"Is this how he treats you?" he asked softly, a trace of concern threading through his voice. "Leaving at a whim—offering no word of explanation? Getting angry over the very things he caused?"
"He walks a different path than I," Caelith replied calmly. "In my hands, I hold but needle and thread, my thoughts occupied with patterns and silk. In his hands are blades and spears—his concerns lie with the fate of the Empire. It is only natural he need not explain himself to me. Or to anyone else for that matter."
She lowered herself slowly back into her seat, lifting the cup of tea that had long since grown cold.
She took a sip. It was bitter.

Meanwhile, Rhaegar rode hard beneath the night sky, his horse cutting through the streets like an arrow loosed from the bow. Without pause, he arrived at the gates of the Tanmin residence.
The gatekeeper barely had time to announce him before being brushed aside.
Through corridors and shadowed walkways he went, his steps swift and unyielding, until he reached the rear garden.
There, beneath the pale glow of the moon, within a pavilion, sat Isabella.
She was dressed in garments of quiet simplicity, her hair loosely gathered without the usual adornment of jeweled ornaments. Moonlight washed over her features, lending her a fragile pallor. A scroll rested in her hands, though her eyes were unfocused, her thoughts clearly elsewhere.
At the sound of approaching footsteps, she looked up. The moment she saw him, surprise flickered across her face—then, at once, she smiled.
"Lord Rhaegar, so late at night—what brings you—"
He did not let her finish. Stepping into the pavilion, he took a seat opposite her, his gaze fixed upon her eyes with unyielding intensity.
"The rumors," he said. "Were they your doing?"
For a fleeting instant, her smile faltered.
"What are you saying? I... I do not understand..."
"Isabella." Rhaegar spoke her name, his voice turning cold as winter steel. "Do not question the reach of the Shadow Guard."
At those words, Isabella lowered her gaze, her fingers tightening within the folds of her sleeve.
"...It was I."
She lifted her head again, her eyes already rimmed with red.
"I did not wish for it to be so," she said, her voice trembling. "I know your heart belongs only to Caelith. But what choice had I? This match was arranged by my family—sanctioned by the Emperor himself. My father’s health is failing... how could I place further burden upon him?"
Tears slipped down her cheeks.
"I never meant to harm her," she continued, drawing in a shaky breath. "I was only... pained. When others asked why you sought to break the engagement, I said I did not know—and then they began their wild speculations. It cannot all be laid at my feet..."
Rhaegar did not answer.
He simply looked at her, long and hard, as if he could kill with the slightest flatter of his lashes.
That glare—cold, merciless—froze even her tears where they fell.
"Isabella," he said at last, his voice calm—too calm, like still water concealing unfathomable depths. "Do you know how many people I have seen weep within the imperial prisons?"
She faltered, caught off guard.
"Murderers weep. Corrupt officials weep. All manner of men weep." His eyes did not leave hers. "Tears are no proof of innocence."
Her expression shifted, unease creeping across her face.
"What... do you mean?"
"My meaning is simple." He leaned forward slightly, his gaze pressing upon her like the edge of a blade. "You perform your role well."
Her tears stilled entirely.
A faint curve touched his lips—cold, devoid of warmth.
"Do you know how I uncovered it?" he continued. "The servant who carried your words—I had him questioned. It took but a moment before he confessed all. He said it was your personal maid who ordered him. That maid... has already been taken to the Shadow Guard’s prison."
Isabella’s face drained of color.
"Would you care to see her?" Rhaegar asked lightly, as though discussing some trivial courtesy. "Once she has finished speaking, I can have her returned to you."
Terror seized her tongue; no words came.
Rhaegar rose to his feet.
"Isabella," he said, looking down upon her, "we have grown up together. You know my nature well. Even if your rumors drove Caelith to withdraw... even if, for my sake, she chose to leave this capital forever—still, in this lifetime, I have chosen her. Nothing will change that."
His voice did not rise. Yet each word struck with the weight of iron.
"My father cannot stop me. The Emperor cannot stop me. Even she herself has no power to change this."
He paused. Then his gaze hardened.
"But you—" He stood above her, his presence like a shadow cast over her very breath.
"From childhood, I believed you clever beyond measure. Yet you have committed one grave error."
His voice fell, quiet and final. "You laid your hand upon her."
"Three days," Rhaegar then said after a brief pause, each word measured, leaving no room for defiance. "I grant you three days to silence every whisper, every rumor that stains her name."
