- Chapter 1: The Wedding Night
Inside the residence, Rhaegar stood beside the window. His tall figure remained still against the darkness as he gazed out into the silent courtyard.
Moonlight spread across the stone paths below, cold and lonely. Yet his thoughts were nowhere near the scene unfolding outside.
They belonged entirely to Caelith.
He remembered her smile. Bright and warm, capable of dispelling even the darkest moods.
He remembered the sight of her bent over her embroidery frame, delicate fingers guiding silk threads beneath the sunlight while golden rays danced across her features.
He remembered the way she curled against his chest, soft and trusting, her gentle breaths rising and falling against him in a steady rhythm.
The memories came one after another.
Simple moments. Ordinary moments. Yet each one carried a warmth that eased the tension coiled within him.
The tightness in his chest gradually loosened. His expression softened. Then, without another thought, he turned away from the window.
He wanted to see her. Now.
The desire struck with such sudden certainty that it left no room for hesitation.
Moments later, he was astride his horse.
The sleeping city stretched before him beneath the moonlit sky.
Hooves pounded against the stone streets, their sharp rhythm shattering the stillness of the night.
The autumn wind rushed past him, cold and biting, tugging at his robes and whipping through his hair. Yet the restless agitation lingering inside him refused to disappear.
If anything, it only grew stronger.
He needed to see her. Needed to know she was there. Needed to hear her voice.
By the time he arrived at Firefly Pavilion, the moon had climbed even higher into the heavens.
The courtyard gate stood partially closed. A faint sliver of warm light spilled through the narrow gap.
Rhaegar dismounted and pushed the gate open. The hinges creaked softly.
He stepped inside.
The courtyard lay quiet beneath the silver glow of moonlight.
The world seemed asleep.
No voices. No movement. No sound except the distant whisper of leaves stirring in the wind.
Yet one chamber remained illuminated. A single lamp burned within Caelith’s room, its warm golden light shone through the paper windows, a small beacon amid the vast darkness.
Rhaegar’s gaze settled upon it.
Then, without hesitation, he began walking toward her door. He was about to walk toward it when a shadow suddenly flashed past her window.
The movement was swift; so swift it seemed no more than a passing gust of wind.
But Rhaegar recognized the figure instantly.
Erian.
His footsteps halted.
What was Erian doing outside her window now?
Rhaegar stood motionless, watching as the dark figure vanished into the shadows. The irritation inside him transformed into something darker. Something colder.
He crossed the courtyard and pushed open the door.
Inside, Caelith was leaning against the headboard. Her complexion was slightly pale, as though she had only just awakened.
The moment she saw him, surprise appeared in her eyes.
"You came back so late?"
Rhaegar did not answer. Instead, he regarder her with a heavy, sharp glare.
"Was Erian outside just now?"
Caelith blinked in confusion.
"Erian? I don’t know. Perhaps he was making his rounds for the night watch."
"Making his rounds outside your window?"
The tone in his voice made her frown.
"Rhaegar, what exactly are you implying?"
Rhaegar kept staring at her.
"What am I implying?" His voice was low. "You know perfectly well."
The color slowly drained from Caelith’s face.
"I don’t know anything. If you have something to say, say it clearly."
Rhaegar bit his tongue. His mind replayed what he had just witnessed.
How long had he been there? What had he been watching? Why had he been watching at all?
Then he remembered the way Erian looked at her.
That gaze... He knew it too well. Because it was the same way he himself looked at her. It was the same way Marina looked at him.
"Rhaegar." A faint tremor entered Caelith’s voice. "What are you trying to say?"
Rhaegar met her eyes. "He loves you."
Caelith froze. "What?"
"Erian." His voice hardened. "He loves you. Not as a friend but... As a woman."
For a moment, she could only stare at him, speechless.
Rhaegar watched her stunned expression, and the fire burning inside him only intensified.
"You didn’t know?" he asked. "Or are you pretending not to know?"
The last traces of color vanished from her face.
"Rhaegar, have you lost your mind?" she said in disbelief. "He’s practically a child. He doesn’t understand those things. He is attached to me because I offered him a helping hand. What he feels is gratitude, not love."
"He understands everything." Rhaegar cut her off immediately. "He knows what love is."
Caelith widened her eyes at him once more. The man standing before her felt strangely unfamiliar.
For the first time since they had met, she saw jealousy stripped of reason and laid completely bare.
A sudden chill spread through Caelith’s body. She looked at him in disbelief.
"Are you suspecting me of something?"
Rhaegar said nothing, but that silence was answer enough.
Caelith felt her heart sting.
"Erian and I have never had that kind of relationship." Her voice trembled despite her efforts to remain calm. "He saved me. He protects me because I once showed him kindness, because he feels indebted to me. If you don’t believe me, then ask him yourself."
Rhaegar’s gaze remained fixed upon her.
"Ask him?" he repeated coldly. "Do you think he would tell me the truth?" His voice grew harsher with every word. "Caelith, I asked you again and again to send him away. I even arranged a future for him myself, and every time you refused. What exactly am I supposed to think?" His jaw tightened. "Or is it because you truly care for him?"
Caelith froze. For a moment, she simply stared at him, stunned. The man before her wore Rhaegar’s face, yet suddenly, she felt as though she did not know him at all.
"Rhaegar." Her voice became frighteningly calm. "I want you to leave."
Rhaegar’s brows shot upward. "What?"
"Leave." She repeated the word without raising her voice. But that quietness was far more unsettling than anger.
"I don’t want to talk to you while you’re like this."
Rhaegar kept staring at her, his gaze running frantically all over her face.
Her eyes were red, but not a single tear had fallen. She simply watched him, completely devoid of emotion.
For a long moment, he seemed as though he wanted to say something... Yet no words came.
At last, he turned and walked away.
The door slammed shut behind him.
Silence descended upon the room.
Caelith sat motionless on the bed, her fingers twisting tightly into the blankets.
Only after he was gone did the tears finally fall.

Early the following morning, Marina left her residence again, but instead of going directly to Firefly Pavilion, she first visited Yvaine’s new home.
Yvaine was having refreshing tea beneath the morning sun when she noticed the visitor.
Surprise immediately crossed her face.
"Lady Walerick?"
Marina entered the courtyard with a warm smile.
"Miss Yvaine, I came to see how married life is treating you."
A blush immediately rose to Yvaine’s cheeks. "It’s... very good."
The two women sat together and exchanged casual conversation.
After speaking of this and that for a while, Marina suddenly lowered her voice.
"Miss Yvaine, I heard Miss Caelith is ill."
Yvaine blinked, confused. "How did you hear that?"
Marina smiled. "I overheard people discussing it on my way here."
Yvaine sighed softly.
"She is ill. She developed a fever last night. I visited her this morning and she was still resting."
For the briefest moment, something flickered in Marina’s eyes.
"Really?" she asked gently. "How did it happen?"
Yvaine shook her head. "I don’t know. Perhaps she didn’t sleep well." She hesitated before continuing. "Though... I heard she argued with Lord Rhaegar. That probably affected her mood."
Marina rose immediately, nearly turning the table over. "I should go see her."
Yvaine stood as well. "A-alright. Then I’ll come with you."
Together, they left the house and headed toward Firefly Pavilion. Marina walked slightly ahead. A faint smile curved her lips.
Ill? Quarreled with Rhaegar? That is interesting. Very interesting indeed.
***
By the time they arrived at Firefly Pavilion, Caelith was sitting propped against the headboard.
Her complexion was pale. Her lips were dry. She looked genuinely unwell.
Yvaine hurried toward the kitchen to prepare medicine.
Meanwhile, Marina sat beside the bed and gently took hold of Caelith’s hand.
Concern filled her expression as she spoke, "Miss Caelith, how did you become so ill? Were you unable to sleep last night?"
Caelith looked at her quietly. Her emotions were difficult to describe.
"It’s nothing serious," she said softly. "Just a minor illness."
Marina sighed sympathetically.
"You must take care of yourself. Lord Rhaegar treasures you so dearly. If he saw you like this, he would be heartbroken."
Caelith remained silent.
Marina stayed a little longer, offering several more words of concern before eventually rising to leave.
When she stepped into the courtyard, she saw someone standing there, keeping watch.
That Erian again...
He stood beneath the shade of the old tree, silent as ever. His dark eyes were fixed upon her.
He watched her with unconcealed malice as if he knew exactly why she was here.
