Within the Imperial Prison, Rhaegar sat behind his desk, reviewing case files beneath the dim glow of a hanging lantern.
The silence was broken only by the rustle of parchment.
The door opened; Lance entered and stopped beside the desk.
His expression was unusually grave. Without looking up, Rhaegar spoke in a low voice, "Report."
Lowering his voice as well, Lance said, "My lord, the men watching Firefly Pavilion have returned with information. Someone has been secretly monitoring the pavilion."
Only then did Rhaegar’s hand pause.
He lifted his eyes and met his knight’s gaze.
"Who?"
"People from the Walerick residence."
A flicker of coldness passed through Rhaegar’s gaze.
"Are you certain?"
Lance nodded immediately.
"Absolutely. We followed them for three days. The watchers changed shifts regularly, but every one of them entered and exited through the rear gate of the Walerick estate."
Silence settled over the room. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎
After a moment, Rhaegar asked, "What else?"
Lance hesitated. Then he continued carefully.
"Erian has been meeting with people connected to the Walerick household. Twice. Both meetings took place at the East City teahouse."
The temperature in the room seemed to drop. Rhaegar narrowed his eyes, but said nothing.
Yet the quill in his hand snapped cleanly in two. The sharp crack echoed through the chamber.
Lance immediately lowered his head. He barely dared to breathe.
A long while passed before Rhaegar finally spoke once more.
"What has Minister Walerick been doing lately?"
Lance blinked in surprise at the sudden change of subject.
"He has been gathering support within the Ministry of Revenue. Rumor says he hopes to advance another step in his career."
Rhaegar nodded. "Send him a message."
Lance lifted his head. "What message, my lord?"
Rhaegar rose from his seat and walked to the window. Outside, the sky was darkening beneath heavy storm clouds.
"Tell him these are my words."
His voice remained calm. Too calm, even.
"Tell him to control his daughter."
Lance froze. "My lord..."
Rhaegar’s gaze remained fixed on the gathering storm beyond the prison walls.
"If she touches Caelith again, I will ensure her father can no longer keep his position in the Ministry."
The words were spoken without emotion. That made them all the more frightening.
Lance immediately bowed. "Yes, my lord."
He turned to leave.
"Wait."
Lance stopped once more.
After a brief pause, Rhaegar added, "Do not tell Caelith."
Understanding dawned instantly. His lord did not want her to think that every problem in her life required his intervention.
Lance lowered his head again. "I understand."
Then he departed.
Alone once more, Rhaegar stood by the window, alone.
The sky beyond was nearly black. Dense clouds pressed low over the capital.
Rain was coming. He could feel it.

Marina received her father’s warning later that same day. She was sitting in her chamber drinking tea when a trembling maid delivered the message.
The porcelain cup slipped from her fingers and shattered upon the floor. Fragments scattered in every direction.
"He dares?!" She shot to her feet.
For several minutes, she paced the room like a trapped animal.
Back and forth. Again and again.
Finally, she stopped. A dangerous light entered her eyes.
"Send word to Erian."
The maid looked up nervously. Marina’s voice turned cold.
"One final chance. If he refuses to come this time, I will expose his identity."
The maid hurried away without delay.
***
Later that evening, inside a private room at the teahouse, Marina sat across from Erian.
Her eyes were red––whether from anger, humiliation, or sleeplessness, even she no longer knew.
"Erian," she said, staring at him coldly. "Rhaegar protects her. What about you?"
Erian remained silent.
Marina stepped closer. "What use is your protection?"
Her voice sharpened. "Does she even see you as a man?"
The words struck harder than any blade. Still, Erian did not answer.
Marina continued.
"You help me. I help you. We each get what we want."
Her eyes gleamed. "She refuses to look at you now, but I can make her look."
At last, Erian raised his gaze. "How?"
Marina smiled. There was something unsteady in that smile now. Something obsessive. Something close to madness.
"It is very simple." She leaned forward. "Make her understand who truly treats her well."
Silence followed. The private room became so quiet that even the sound of their breathing seemed loud.
Time stretched.
Then, at last, Erian replied. "Fine. I’ll help you."
Joy flashed instantly across Marina’s face. Her eyes brightened. The smile returned. But before it could fully bloom, Erian continued.
"I will not harm her, though."
The smile froze. Marina stared at him, confused.
Erian met her gaze without blinking. For the first time, the quiet young man who rarely spoke seemed utterly immovable.
His voice was low. Steady. Unyielding.
"I don’t care what you want from Rhaegar. I don’t care what happens between you and the Walerick family."
His eyes darkened. "But if your plans hurt Caelith..."
He paused. The warning lingered unfinished between them, yet its meaning was unmistakable.
Marina suddenly understood. The greatest weakness of the man sitting before her was also the one thing she could never control.
Because whatever feelings Erian carried in his heart, they all began and ended with the same feeling... Love.
And for its sake, he was willing to become either a shield or a blade.
Those eyes remained calm. So calm that it was impossible to tell what thoughts lay beneath their surface.
"As long as what you ask of me does not harm her, I will do it."
Erian’s voice was steady. Then his gaze hardened ever so slightly.
"But if I discover that you’re hurting her..."
He left the sentence unfinished, yet the look in his eyes was enough.
For the first time, a chill crept down Marina’s spine. After a brief pause, she forced a smile.
"Fine."
She extended a hand toward him as though sealing an agreement.
"We have a deal."
Erian rose to his feet. Without another word, he headed toward the door, but just before stepping out, he stopped and said without turning around,
"You’d better keep your word."
