"How dare she treat you so?" Rhaegar’s low voice darkened at once, fury rising beneath its measured calm. "I shall dispatch my men immediately. She will answer for what she has done—I will see that she pays dearly for every grievance she has caused you!"
There was no concealment in his anger, nor in the sharp edge of protectiveness that accompanied it. In that moment, he would have torn Yvaine Emberlyn apart without hesitation, had it meant redressing even a fragment of Caelith’s past suffering.
Yet Caelith only lifted her hand and gently freed herself from his grasp––calm and elegant like a line of silk caught in the morning breeze.
"There is no need, Your Grace."
He frowned, the storm in his gaze not yet abated.
"No need?" he repeated. "After what she has done to you, how can she be allowed to walk free? I’d rather she crawled in the mud with her legs caught off until she bleeds to death!"
A faint, cold smile touched Caelith’s lips. It felt nice to have someone feel that way on her behalf.
"Because," she said quietly, "Dorian Valehart and Yvaine Emberlyn now lie within the palm of my hand. They are completely at my mercy."
There was a quiet certainty in her tone—one that spoke not of impulse, but of careful design.
"When the time comes that I require your aid," she continued, her voice soft yet deliberate, "I will tell you, Lord Thorne."
The fire in Rhaegar’s eyes slowly subsided, replaced instead by something far more profound—an ache, deep and unspoken.
She was always like this.
No matter the hardship, no matter the injustice, she would not bow her head. Even when wronged, even when wounded, she chose silence over complaint, strength over reliance.
And it was precisely this that stirred both admiration... and a quiet, aching tenderness within him.
He stepped closer.
Closer still—until she found herself pressed back against the chair, his presence enclosing her once more. He bent slightly, his gaze lowering to meet hers, those deep, blossom-shaped eyes that held more than they ever revealed.
"With me here," he said softly, "you need not be so strong."
The words fell gently—yet struck like a ripple across still water.
For a fleeting instant, something within Caelith trembled.
No one had ever spoken to her thus.
No one had ever told her she need not endure alone—need not carry everything upon her own shoulders.
A faint warmth rose unbidden behind her eyes, and before she could restrain it, they shimmered with unshed tears.
Rhaegar saw it all.
And without hesitation, he lowered his head, brushing a soft kiss against the corner of her eye, as though to catch the fragile glimmer before it could fall.
Her breath caught.
A quiet, startled flutter stirred within her chest, like the sudden beating of wings.
His lips did not linger there.
They trailed downward, slow and deliberate—not with the forceful dominance he had once shown, but with a tenderness that was almost reverent, as though he feared even the slightest roughness might undo her.
Her body tensed instinctively, yet her hands rose of their own accord, slipping around his neck, drawing him closer despite herself.
Their breaths intertwined.
The world beyond the study seemed to fade into nothingness.
His arm tightened around her waist, holding her securely, as though she might vanish if he did not. His kiss deepened, not hurried, not demanding—yet consuming all the same, as though he wished to carve her presence into memory, into marrow.
Time slipped unnoticed.
Only when a measure of stillness returned did Rhaegar finally draw back, his breath low and steady.
"In days to come," he murmured, his voice close to her ear, "so long as I am here... you need fear nothing."
Caelith turned her face aside, avoiding his gaze.
Had she not been seated, she suspected she might no longer have been able to stand.
Her limbs felt weak—treacherously so.
And in that moment, an unsettling thought took root.
Had she... truly begun to feel something for this man before her?
She steadied herself, forcing her voice back into composure.
"My thanks, my lord... for the gold you bestowed."
It was an intentional shift—a refuge from the storm he stirred within her.
Rhaegar seemed to notice, yet did not expose it. Instead, he lifted his hand, gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. His fingertips brushed against her earlobe in passing, drawing from her a faint, involuntary tremor.
"Between you and me," he said quietly, "there is no need for such formality."
Yet even as his tone softened, a question lingered—unspoken, but no less real.
Caelith did not understand him.
She could not.
She was, after all, a married woman. She belonged to someone else.
And yet he shielded her, aided her, placed weapons in her hand and gold in her keeping, as though her safety and comfort were matters of utmost importance.
This was no passing whim. No fleeting fancy.
There was purpose here—depth, intention... something far from simple.
And that, more than anything, left her uneasy.
Why?
Why would Duke Rhaegar Thorne go to such lengths for her?
What, truly... did he seek?
Rhaegar’s every word and gesture stirred within her a distant, half-forgotten memory.
Unbidden, her thoughts drifted back to a boy from long ago—one with smiling eyes, who would secretly tuck pieces of butter cake into her hands, as though sharing a treasure meant only for her.
Yet the man before her bore little resemblance to that gentle youth of memory. Time had carved him into something sharper, darker—someone cloaked in power and shadow.
Who... are you, really?
Her gaze lingered upon him, searching.
"My lord," she asked softly, "did you ever travel to the Kingdom of Miaelin in your childhood?"
At her question, Rhaegar stilled—just for a fleeting moment.
"...Why do you ask?" he replied.
Caelith lowered her eyes slightly, masking her intent.
"The scent of pine upon you—I have encountered it before, in the southern lands. It made me wonder whether you had once journeyed there."
