- Chapter 1: The Wedding Night
Hearing their hushed exchange, Caelith’s lips curved into a faint, knowing smile.
Rhaegar Thorne—so feared throughout the capital, a man whose name alone could chill the hearts of many—yet behind that cold, impenetrable façade, he had quietly sent medicine to save a dying mother.
Such contradictions stirred something deep within her.
A man who appeared merciless, yet acted with hidden compassion... a man who stood like iron before the world, yet softened in silence—for her sake.
For it was because that thief hailed from Dolly’s homeland that he had shown restraint.
Because of her.
That realization sent an unfamiliar tremor through her heart—subtle, yet impossible to ignore.
He was the terror of the capital... and yet, he was also the man who stood at her side, shielding her from harm.
And that made him all the more real.
All the more... irresistible.
The door creaked softly as Dolly entered, catching sight of the faint smile lingering at the corner of her mistress’s lips.
"My lady... what brings you such delight?"
Caelith returned to herself at once, her expression smoothing over.
"It is nothing."
Yet in that fleeting moment, she understood something she had long refused to name.
She liked him.
Not merely for his protection, nor for the refuge he offered—but for the quiet warmth hidden beneath his cold exterior... for the mercy that followed his severity... for the man he was, beneath all else.
The following morning—
After breakfast, Steward Milton arrived unannounced.
"My lady," he said with a respectful bow, "Lord Rhaegar awaits you at the usual place. He bade me inform you that he has matters he wishes to discuss."
"...Very well," Caelith replied, though her voice carried a note of haste she did not quite conceal.
As soon as he departed, she rose at once and moved toward her inner chambers.
Dolly, noticing her urgency, could not help but smile.
"I shall see to your preparations at once."
Indeed, Caelith herself had scarcely realized how eager she had become.
She wished to go—wished to see him, to hear what he would say... perhaps even to draw a little closer still.
But as Dolly finished arranging the final strand of her hair, Caelith’s gaze fell upon her own reflection in the bronze mirror—
—and she froze.
The woman gazing back at her bore eyes alight with unmistakable anticipation.
Where was her composure?
Where was the restraint she had so carefully maintained?
At the mere knowledge that he was waiting for her, her heart had already begun to race, her thoughts scattered, her steps hurried.
Was this not the very image of those sheltered maidens who lived only for matters of the heart?
Since when... had she become such a person?
These past days, what had begun as reliance had quietly deepened—into something far more dangerous.
Something far more consuming.
His words... his presence... even the faintest memory of him—all of it had begun to govern her heart.
More than once, in the stillness of night, she had found herself thinking of him, sleepless beneath the quiet dark.
But she could not afford this.
She still had vengeance to seek.
A past to settle.
A life to reclaim.
And yet... because of Rhaegar Thorne, she was beginning to lose her balance—her clarity—perhaps even herself.
If she continued down this path...
Would she one day find herself unable to turn back?
Would this fragile, dangerous affection become a blade—one that could wound not only her, but him as well?
No.
Better to withdraw now.
Better to preserve what little remained—before it grew beyond control.
Before it consumed them both.
Caelith raised a hand and gently wiped away the tint from her lips.
"I will not go."
Dolly blinked in confusion. "My lady... why the sudden change?"
"Go to Steward Milton," Caelith said quietly, her voice steady once more, though something faintly hollow lingered beneath it. "Tell him I have taken ill with a chill and cannot leave the estate today."
"...We shall arrange another time to meet Lord Thorne."
Dolly noticed at once the subtle pallor upon Caelith’s face and quickly bowed her head.
"Yes, my lady."
When Steward Milton conveyed her message, word for word, to Rhaegar, his gaze turned cold as he looked in the direction of the Valehart estate, his brows drawing together in a tight frown.
"So... she has learned to make excuses."
Only yesterday she had been well—how could she suddenly fall ill? He understood all too clearly: these were but pretexts.
She was avoiding him.
And that—more than anything—stirred a flicker of anger within him.
"Prepare the carriage," he ordered.
Lance Illian stepped forward at once. "My lord—where are you bound?"
"To the Valehart estate." Rhaegar’s eyes darkened. "If she will not come to me... then I shall go to her."
From the southern lands of the Kingdom of Miaelin to the heart of the capital, he had searched for her for years.
Now that he had found her—now that her heart had begun, however faintly, to turn toward him...
How could he allow her to retreat so easily?
By dusk, a carriage had drawn to a halt within the narrow back alley of the Valehart estate.
Rhaegar summoned Steward Milton.
"Go. Tell Lady Caelith that I await her here, within this carriage. If she comes, all shall be forgiven. If she refuses..." His voice lowered, edged with quiet steel. "I shall enter the estate myself to fetch her."
Milton dared not delay.
He hurried within and soon arrived at Caelith’s courtyard, delivering the message without omission.
Caelith fell silent.
She had known he would not yield so easily. A man like him—strong, resolute—would never be turned aside by a mere excuse.
Yet she had not expected... that he would come in person.
"To the very gates of the wolf’s den," she murmured inwardly.
"Alright. I understand."
She rose slowly.
There was no choice left to her.
If she did not go, he truly might storm the estate—and that would bring ruin upon them both.
