Marina shot to her feet and began pacing the length of her chamber. She moved from one end of the room to the other, her embroidered skirts whispering across the polished floor with every restless step.
Once.
Twice.
Again.
The longer she walked, the more unsettled she became. Then, without warning, she stopped.
No. She could not continue waiting like this. Why should she be the one swallowing her pride to win that woman’s favor?
Why should she force herself to smile, flatter, and curry favor with nothing more than a lowly embroiderer?
A flicker of defiance flashed through her eyes. She wanted to see Rhaegar. Not through messages. Not through other people.
She wanted to stand before him herself. She refused to believe that if she faced him directly, she would truly lose to Caelith.
With renewed determination, Marina strode toward her dressing table. She changed into a fresh set of robes and sat before the bronze mirror, carefully studying her reflection.
The woman staring back at her was exquisitely beautiful.
Her features were delicate and graceful, her skin smooth as jade without the slightest imperfection. Years of noble upbringing had cultivated an elegance in her every movement, lending her a poise that few women could rival.
She adjusted a strand of hair near her temple and examined herself once more.
Only when she found nothing to criticize did she finally rise. Without a moment’s hesitation, she pushed open the door and stepped into the night.
A maid waiting outside hurried forward at once. "My Lady, where are you going so late?"
"Out for a walk."
The maid blinked in surprise and glanced toward the darkened courtyard. "But, My Lady, it is already nightfall..."
"Do not follow me."
Marina did not slow her pace or look back. Her voice left no room for argument.
The maid could only watch helplessly as her mistress disappeared into the darkness, her slender figure growing smaller beneath the moonlit sky until she was swallowed by the shadows altogether.

Rhaegar had only just returned from the Imperial Prison. The scent of damp stone and cold iron still lingered on him as he stepped into his residence. Removing his official uniform, he had barely loosened the heavy layers when a knock suddenly echoed through the quiet night.
His movements paused. A faint crease appeared between his brows.
Who would come looking for him at this hour? The residence had long since fallen silent. Even the servants had retired for the evening.
Setting aside his outer coat, he crossed the room and pulled open the door. The moment he did, his gaze stilled.
Marina?
The silver glow draped itself across her figure like a translucent veil, softening the pale hues of her dress and outlining her graceful silhouette. The night breeze stirred the loose strands of hair beside her cheeks, lending her an almost ethereal beauty.
She lifted her eyes to meet his and offered a gentle smile.
"Lord Rhaegar."
For the first time, unmistakable surprise flickered across his usually composed features.
"Lady Walerick?"
Marina tightened her fingers within her sleeves before taking a tentative step forward.
"I... I have something I need to say to you."
Rhaegar regarded her quietly. His expression remained calm, but his voice carried a subtle distance.
"It is late. Whatever it is can wait until tomorrow."
Marina immediately shook her head. "No."
The single word emerged softer than she intended. Her throat tightened. "It has to be tonight."
A shadow passed through Rhaegar’s eyes.
"Lady Walerick," he said evenly, "this is inappropriate."
The words made her face pale slightly, but she forced herself not to retreat. Instead, she raised her gaze and looked directly into his eyes.
"Lord Rhaegar, I only wish to ask one question."
Rhaegar said nothing, and she treated that silence as permission.
Marina drew a slow breath, gathering every ounce of courage she possessed.
"What is it that makes me inferior to Miss Emberlyn?"
For a brief moment, even Rhaegar seemed caught off guard.
Before he could respond, the words she had suppressed for so long came pouring out.
"My family background, my appearance, my education, my accomplishments." Her voice tightened with every sentence. "In what way am I lacking compared to her?"
A painful bitterness surfaced in her eyes.
"Why would you rather choose an embroiderer than spare me even a single glance?"
The courtyard fell silent. The night wind drifted through the flowering trees, carrying the faint fragrance of blossoms between them.
Neither moved. Neither spoke.
The stillness stretched endlessly.
At last, Rhaegar broke the silence.
"Lady Walerick." His voice was calm and steady. "You are an exceptional woman."
The words struck her like the first ray of sunlight breaking through storm clouds. Hope ignited instantly in her eyes. Her heart began to race.
"Then..."
Before she could finish, Rhaegar spoke again.
"But she is mine. She is different because she is my woman."
The world seemed to have stopped. The fragile hope that had just begun to bloom was shattered in an instant.
Marina froze right where she stood. Her face drained of color.
Rhaegar met her gaze without hesitation.
"It does not matter how remarkable someone else may be."
His voice remained quiet, yet every word carried unwavering certainty. His eyes never left hers.
"The only person I want is her."
The night wind swept through the courtyard once more. This time, it felt unbearably cold.
The last trace of warmth drained from Marina’s face. Tears flooded her eyes almost instantly, blurring the world before her.
"Why?" she whispered. Her voice trembled, fragile and broken. "Why?"
Rhaegar remained silent. There was no answer he could give that she would truly understand.
Love had never been something that could be measured or weighed. It was not determined by beauty. Nor by status. Nor by talent, education, or accomplishment.
It simply existed.
Without reason. Without logic. Without fairness.
Slowly, Rhaegar stepped backward. The distance between them widened by a single step.
Then another.
At last, he reached for the door.
"Go home." His voice was calm, neither cruel nor comforting.
The door closed firmly between them. The soft thud echoed through the silent courtyard.
Marina stood frozen before it, staring at the tightly shut door as though she could somehow will it to open again.
For a long time, she did not move.
Then the tears she had fought so desperately to hold back finally escaped.
One drop.
Then another.
And another.
Soon they fell without end, streaming silently down her cheeks.
The night wind drifted through the courtyard, carrying with it the chill of late autumn.
The cold seeped into her skin. Into her bones. Into the aching emptiness within her chest.
Slowly, she wrapped her arms around herself as though trying to hold together the pieces of a soul that had just shattered.
Then she sank down before the closed door.
Alone beneath the moonlight. Alone before the man she loved. Alone before a heart she could never possess.
The moon hung high above, indifferent and distant. Its pale light bathed the courtyard in silver, illuminating the tears that continued to fall unchecked.
Marina cried for a very long time.
