"But what about a fight?" Kit started. "We can make you leader of a legion instead of senate. You’re the only one that can take him... I think. Can you even hurt him?"

Nirvana turned to Faust with a worried look. "You don’t have to if you don’t think you can win. We don’t owe these guys anything."

Diego and Kit tried to hide their displeasure, but were shocked when Faust started laughing.

"Don’t worry about me. I’ll win."

Then he sighed and rubbed his head. He really didn’t want to tell them this, but they wouldn’t believe him without it.

"Besides, anyone can hurt Jason. All you have to do is be at the same level as him or higher. Higher is probably better."

They all sat up, looking confused.

Diego leaned forward. "You know how his Schema works?"

"A little, just based on some guesses. But if you invest in someone like Zen, Spider, or that Firestarter girl no one told me about, they can become your shield."

Diego flinched. "Joan—Firestarter—is a special case. Her Schema negatively affects her already terrible mental state. The only reason we’re able to bring her to fights is her sister. We’re hoping that her race evolution might help, because of her Schema’s description."

Now Faust was just interested in meeting her and learning about this Schema. "Where have you been keeping her?"

Diego and Kit exchanged nervous looks before he began to explain.

"That’s the other thing. You asked where we got this bottle of wine... we got it from Earth."

Faust blinked a couple of times. "Like someone brought it with them when they were teleported?"

"No.... Do you remember the system message before the fourth wave? The debuffs to skills and items?"

It clicked in Faust’s head finally, and he almost laughed aloud.

"The Door skill that it mentioned... you had someone open a door across the spatial boundary to Earth."

Nirvana froze and turned to Diego with wide crimson eyes. "You guys had a way back this entire time?"

Diego flinched. "It’s not exactly a way back. You still have to come back through the door before the system penalizes you, and it burns an incredible amount of monster cores with each use. But yeah... we had a way back technically."

Nirvana stood up, and Kit tensed, preparing for a fight, but Nirvana just paced behind Faust in the narrow space between their chairs and the shelves.

"That was the right thing to do," Faust said. Despite Nirvana’s shocked expression, he continued, "You announce that and everyone will be trying to get through even if they don’t fully understand."

Diego straightened a bit with the approval. "Thank you... but yeah, that’s our advantage. We keep Joan in an isolated facility in the North Pole. Got the suggestion from someone that had been there before. That access is another advantage we have over Jason."

Faust nodded. Now all they had to do was straighten out some other details. But their plans against Jason were coming out well.

They waited for Diego and Kit to leave first, not wanting to be seen with them. Faust reclined in his seat and took the last bite of his pastries. No more going back from this.

The fight with Jason was coming.

Frankly, Faust didn’t care what Diego said. Jason wouldn’t settle for just beating him, especially after being disgraced.

This ended with one of them dead.

Nirvana leaned into him as they waited, getting really close. She rested a hand on his lap, and almost immediately Faust realized what was happening.

He slipped a hand around her waist and pulled her onto his lap. The soft cadence of Nirvana’s laugh was exciting.

Her crimson eyes bored into his. "Are you sure about this?" Her voice was low and tempestuous.

"Definitely. I should go warn Sergio about coming in here."

"No." She laughed again. "Not that. I mean Diego and his whole Jason plan."

He shrugged his shoulders. "We see things differently, I guess. He’s trying to mitigate the fallout from an all-out confrontation. It’s the best move for someone with more to worry about than himself."

Nirvana caught onto what he was saying. "But Jason is only fighting for himself."

"At the end of the day, we’re going to have to get bloody." Faust smirked.

"I hate how right you are about that. I wish we could all just be a bit reasonable."

She was one to talk. Faust still had to broach the topic of her apologizing to Amelia for what happened before the fourth wave. There wasn’t much time before, but now they were free she had to deal with that.

Amelia had his stuff, after all. And he’d like to keep using her services in the future.

Nirvana’s eyes narrowed. "What are you thinking about?"

’Holy crap, that’s a bit scary.’ Faust blinked twice. "Nothing. I was just admiring how beautiful you are. And how much I want to kiss you—"

She rushed into the kiss immediately. Her lips were soft, warm, and tasted faintly of grapes. She adjusted her position until she was straddling him and deepened the kiss.

Their tongues intertwined in a mind-numbing dance that felt like an eternity. She gripped his shirt so tight it ripped slightly.

"Sorry," she murmured between kisses, rocking back and forth over his crotch instinctively.

He reached up through her shirt to run his fingers over her skin. It felt almost burning hot and supple in maddening ways. He cupped her breasts, and she let out a breath of surprise.

At this point, she could feel him through his trousers, so she shifted to get her hand around it.

The rest was a bit of a blur. Faust set her down on the table and went to work, listening at the same time to make sure no one walked in on them.

He really should consider going to lock the door or at least warn Sergio, but the thought of even taking his hands off Nirvana right now seemed impossible.

She wrapped her legs around his waist with strength Faust didn’t know she had in her. Their bodies twisted so tightly together it was hard to tell where she ended and he began.

Kye texted him twice during that, asking if he was ready for the interview. He asked for a delay as Nirvana started biting him. His confusion was overridden by how good it felt.

Kye allowed a delay, but she warned he’d have to wait an hour for the next slot.

Which was good, because that was just when Faust finally managed to convince Nirvana that they would continue later.

He felt a bit awkward running off like this but he’d make it up to her.

Once fully dressed and looking a bit less like he had just been in a washing machine on spin cycle, Faust accepted the interview invitation.
