Black sand shifted beneath Damien’s boots while Bram rolled his thick shoulders under six glowing barrier towers.
The senior looked even larger across open ground, ’level one-sixty, great, now his sword seems bigger too, which feels unnecessarily rude.’
Marshal Sera raised one armored hand from the center platform as every camera crystal focused on both fighters.
"Lethal force has been accepted by mutual seal, so neither family may retaliate through Halcrest authority," she announced, watching Damien carefully.
"Yeah, we heard the warning downstairs," Damien said, drawing his black saber, "please start before Bram grows another speech."
Laughter rolled through the lower seats, and Bram’s grip tightened around his cleaver before Sera dropped her hand.
Damien heard the crowd settle around them, ’everyone expects one swing to end me, fine, survive long enough to make their phones useful.’
"Begin when both fighters confirm their seals and clear the center mark," she called, stepping through the arena barrier as its surface closed behind her.
Bram charged without testing distance, driving both boots through the sand while his cleaver rose above one shoulder.
’Straight in, no, somebody forty levels higher could afford direct, this bastard has nearly one hundred on me.’
Damien shifted left before the downswing and felt steel pass close enough to pull his coat against one side.
The cleaver struck sand with a blast that threw black grains across his face, then Bram ripped it upward toward Damien’s ribs.
He caught the rising flat against his saber and nearly lost both arms, ’fuck, blocking was stupid, remember that lesson if my shoulders remain attached.’
His boots slid four meters before the weapons separated, leaving two narrow trenches across the arena floor.
Bram grinned and followed, "Well, that gala strength disappeared quickly, Sterling, so kneel while your legs still work."
"Oh, I found your surprise," Damien replied, shaking feeling back into one hand, "you are even uglier from this distance." Anger sharpened Bram’s next step, and a pale system circle opened over his chest before Damien consciously called anything.
[Eye of Reckoning]
[Bram Holt]
[Level Band: 150–175]
[Aspect: Impact Storage]
[Tell: Right Heel Loads Before Release]
’There, the heel, not the shoulders, so quit watching all that dramatic metal.’
Bram’s right boot pressed deep, then stored force exploded through a horizontal cleaver swing aimed toward Damien’s neck.
Damien dropped beneath the edge and stepped close enough to smell leather oil across the senior’s coat.
His saber hilt struck Bram’s mouth before the large fighter could recover, splitting one lip against his teeth.
The crowd made one sharp sound as Damien hooked Bram’s leading ankle and shoved behind the loaded knee.
"What the hell kind of stance lets you crawl under my sword?" Bram snapped, stumbling sideways while his cleaver carved empty air.
"Asking during the fight feels lazy when your weapon remains this slow," Damien answered, driving a short cut across the older student’s forearm.
Blood touched the sand, and a black-red mark formed beneath Bram’s skin before spreading around the wound.
[Sinner’s Brand Applied]
[Target Count: 1 / 1]
The senior stared at the mark, then rage pushed him forward with less control than before.
’Good, come closer, though maybe stop looking delighted when a man twice your weight wants murder, you absolute idiot.’
Bram hammered three strikes through Damien’s guard, each impact forcing pain deeper into his wrists while the saber’s silver tally brightened.
[Blocked Damage Recorded: 42]
[Flesh Debt: 50]
[Grazing Damage Recorded: 31]
[Brand Multiplier Applied]
[Flesh Debt: 87]
Numbers flashed between attacks, though Damien had no spare attention for reading more than the rising total.
He moved inside every wide swing and cut with short wrist turns, using elbows when the saber angle vanished.
The commentary desk began shouting over itself above the western seats, unable to identify any school beneath his footwork.
"That is not Sterling form work," one commentator yelled, leaning over the rail, "somebody tell me why he keeps entering the cleaver’s reach."
"Somebody tell Bram to stop letting that smaller bastard embarrass him," the second voice answered as Damien’s shoulder struck the senior’s chest.
Bram grabbed Damien’s coat and threw him across the sand, then stored force burst through the landing before his back touched ground.
Pain cracked along two ribs while the tally flashed brighter, ’damn, he stores impact inside people too, which would have been useful information earlier.’
[Impact Detonation: 188]
[Flesh Debt: 313]
Damien rolled before the cleaver landed where his skull had been, then drove his saber through Bram’s outer thigh.
The blade entered shallow against reinforced muscle, though Sinner’s Brand flared hard enough to make Bram roar.
"You little bastard actually cut me using that filthy gutter trick," Bram shouted, backhanding Damien across the jaw with one armored fist.
White light burst behind Damien’s eyes as he hit the ground, ’yeah, deserved that one, stop getting greedy near his hands.’
[Direct Damage Recorded: 121]
[Flesh Debt: 458]
[Warning: Capacity 71%]
Bram lifted the cleaver above Damien’s chest while his right heel sank, loading every stored impact into one descending strike.
The arena barrier changed from blue to red, and several students stood when the marshal reached toward her emergency seal.
"Stay down, trash, since your family can collect whatever remains after this," Bram said, both arms trembling around the weapon.
Damien looked at the loaded heel and felt fear clear every useless thought from his head.
’He wants the centerline, fine, give him half a step, then make this arrogant asshole regret every camera.’
He kicked black sand into Bram’s cut thigh, forcing the senior’s stance wider before the cleaver came down.
Damien twisted outside the blade and let its flat scrape his shoulder, taking one last burst while his saber’s tally turned white.
[Flesh Debt: 638]
[Capacity: 99%]
[Reckoning Available]
His left hand caught Bram’s wrist, and the right drew the saber across the branded chest with barely any room for power.
"Reckoning, take every damn point this bastard gave me and return it now," Damien said, feeling the entire tally leave his blade at once.
[Reckoning]
[638 Debt × 2.0]
[Damage Released: 1,276]
Silver light crossed Bram from shoulder to hip, lifting his huge body before throwing him into the eastern barrier.
The cleaver landed first, then its owner struck beneath the public Board hard enough to crack three glowing panels.
Silence covered the arena while Damien remained crouched near the center, one hand pressed against his damaged ribs.
’Did I win, no, obviously I won, the problem is standing without making that noise again.’
Bram slid down the barrier and tried lifting his head, but Sinner’s Brand faded before his arms could move.
Marshal Sera entered through the field, checked his pulse, then raised Damien’s bloodied wrist toward the cameras.
"Winner, Damien Sterling, after incapacitation under mutually accepted lethal-force conditions," she announced as the arena finally remembered how to make sound.
The public Board flashed above them, assigning Damien [#412] before recalculating beneath thousands of shouting voices.
[Ascension Board Updated]
[#412 → #388]
[Duel Quest Cleared]
[EXP Gained: 1,875,000]
[Level: 63 → 88]
Damien looked toward Mina near the equipment gate, where she held both hands above her head and screamed something about his terrible guard.
’My level jumped twenty-five times while the Board stopped at three-eighty-eight, good, Bram survived long enough to explain everything later.’
The new cuff number burned beside Damien’s wrist, ’that rank looks painfully low, damn, climbing it might become more enjoyable than expected.’
The commentary desk replayed his close-range cut across every arena screen, then one baffled voice gave the nameless style its first label.
"I do not know what school teaches that," the man said, staring at the frozen frame, "it looked like gutter fighting with a saber."
Damien wiped blood from his mouth as the clip spread beyond Halcrest, carrying Gutter Style into the city before he reached the exit.
