Villain's Refund System: The Protagonist's Harem Is Mine

Chapter 26: The Villainess

Poison flowers pressed against every conservatory window while Isolde poured tea without touching the silver pot.

Damien sat across a narrow glass table inside her private garden, ’damn, everything here can kill me, including possibly the woman smiling behind that fan.’

Her wine-dark hair rested over one shoulder beneath afternoon light, while green eyes followed his hands instead of his face.

The academy uniform carried Marlowe red along its fitted lining, with five poison rings glinting above a porcelain cup.

"Relax, Lord Sterling, the chair only bites guests who arrive without useful information," Isolde said, guiding the teapot through one violet thread.

"That reassurance became considerably worse around the word only today," Damien replied, testing the cup through Eye of Reckoning before drinking.

"Good, caution looks much better on you than false bravery," she answered, folding her black fan beside a plate of untouched fruit.

’No poison in the tea, unless her level hides it from my Eye, which remains an extremely comforting possibility.’

Isolde pushed a narrow case across the table without letting either sleeve touch its glass surface.

Inside lay three venom samples matching the hunter’s blade, each sealed beneath a different Marlowe crest.

"Those vials left our execution garden through somebody carrying Aunt Celene’s authority," she said, watching Damien study their marks, "my own seal appears underneath."

"They are building evidence that you supplied an assassin who targeted me," Damien replied, placing Mina’s sensor near the first vial.

"Exactly, and your survival gave them a terribly inconvenient witness," Isolde answered, smiling as violet light reflected across her lower lip.

’She knows the frame already, good, this conversation might avoid any helpless-villainess nonsense.’

Damien opened a memory of the original execution Chapter and found details missing around its final pages.

The scene still showed Isolde chained beneath Marlowe Keep, while an ancestral venom beast emerged from a gate behind her father.

’Eight months remain, though the poison moved now, shit, Foreknowledge Integrity might lose the only route that kept her alive long enough for Lucas’s trial.’

"Your house will claim you stole garden venom through an underground servant passage," Damien said, touching the second crest, "then they find its keeper dead."

Isolde’s fan stopped halfway toward her face, revealing attention sharper than any flirtation.

"That passage exists beneath the eastern greenhouse, though six relatives believe it was sealed," she replied, lowering her voice.

"Check the third drainage alcove for a replacement hinge installed from outside," Damien answered, remembering one illustration behind the Chapter text.

"How delightfully specific," Isolde said, leaning across the glass until her perfume reached him above poisonous flowers, "would fear please you, perhaps an invitation works better?"

"Verify the hidden hinge before choosing either attractive option around me," Damien replied, keeping his eyes on hers while attraction tried becoming a distraction.

’She is doing that deliberately, wow, Mina teases with tools, while Isolde apparently negotiates using eye contact and dangerous amounts of perfume.’

Her smile widened when he failed to look away, then she opened a second case beneath the table.

’She turned a murder investigation into foreplay without changing expression, damn, nobody should control a conversation this easily inside her own garden.’

Marlowe supply records appeared across its screen, showing three missing antidote precursors routed through academy storage.

"I offer access to every relevant house shipment and one future intervention chosen by me," she said, turning the screen toward him.

"No unrestricted intervention," Damien replied, closing that clause with one finger, "you choose the problem, then I decide whether its cost remains survivable."

Isolde touched one poison ring against the contract, making violet letters crawl away from Damien’s revision before returning beneath her control.

"You negotiate escape routes while sitting inside my locked conservatory," she said, letting one thorned vine curl around the door handle, "that confidence deserves testing."

"Your tea remains clean, the windows carry alarm threads and that vine reacts to hostile movement," Damien replied, counting each defense without turning his head.

Her green eyes narrowed with delighted interest, ’she wanted me to notice the trap, damn, every threat here doubles as an invitation to keep playing.’

"Careful, Lord Sterling, refusing a lady’s request before hearing it can seem terribly rude," Isolde answered, tapping her ring beside his hand.

"Your family raises execution beasts under its basement, so courtesy ranks below definitions," he replied, moving the contract screen back toward her.

’Do not let the pretty villainess write an open favor into your future, you absolute clown, that is how organs become negotiation pieces.’

Isolde laughed softly and changed the clause into one request with a standing right of refusal.

"Better, though I expected the famous Gutter Style to negotiate with less clothing intact," she said, signing beneath her revision.

"That usually happens whenever somebody reaches for a weapon near me," Damien replied, adding his name without accepting her extended hand.

"Five rings qualify as weapons inside this room," she answered, spreading jeweled fingers above the glass, "perhaps you enjoy the danger."

"I enjoy surviving it, which remains different despite recent evidence," he said, watching genuine amusement reach her green eyes.

’She likes that this is not working, or maybe refusing to become flustered counts as flirting inside Marlowe territory.’

The alliance screen closed as a servant brought one sealed folder from the eastern greenhouse.

Isolde opened it herself, finding a photograph of the drainage alcove beneath fresh soil.

A bright new hinge joined the supposedly sealed passage, exactly where Damien had told her to look.

Another photograph showed a dead greenhouse keeper beside an open tool chest, though Isolde covered the body before Damien finished recognizing him.

"He served my mother for sixteen years and never entered that passage alone," she said, pressing the folder shut before grief escaped her voice.

"Then whoever forged your authorization has already started removing inconvenient witnesses," Damien replied, watching her thumb remain against the dead man’s hidden face.

’The servant died ahead of schedule too, fuck, Divergence keeps accelerating every victim connected to a scene I steal.’

Her smile disappeared while both hands flattened against the folder.

’There, flirtation vanished the moment evidence became real, so every relaxed gesture before this was armor.’

"This installation carries my personal workshop authorization from three nights ago," she said, showing a forged signature beneath the photograph.

"The assassin received your poison before yesterday’s ambush," Damien replied, comparing both dates, "somebody started the frame months early."

"Then my relatives have grown impatient with the original execution schedule," Isolde said, finally letting anger roughen her elegant voice.

’She said original schedule, wait, nobody told her there was one, unless she means house custom rather than the story.’

Damien kept the thought behind his face while her fingers closed around the forged authorization.

’Do not ask what she meant yet, one strange phrase proves nothing when her family already schedules executions.’

The system countdown opened beside a second red notice across his sight.

[Isolde Marlowe: Execution]

[8 months, 27 days]

[Frame progress: 14%]

[Schedule deviation: Accelerating]

"Your future intervention may arrive sooner than either of us expected," Damien said, returning the photograph to her folder.

"Then I hope your schedule remains flexible around beautiful women facing wrongful execution," Isolde replied, reopening her fan with one sharp movement.

"Nah, my schedule only respects murder attempts after they become inconvenient," he answered, standing before her perfume caused worse decisions.

Isolde walked him toward the conservatory door while poison flowers turned beneath her silent mana threads.

"One final term, Damien," she said, dropping formal address when her hand reached the latch, "never call me innocent unless you can prove it."

"Good, innocence sounds useless when facts can keep your head attached," he replied, meeting her green gaze across the narrow doorway.

Her fan covered another smile, though the anger behind it remained visible when the conservatory sealed between them.

’The frame already reached fourteen percent, fine, we cut every piece apart before Marlowe can tighten the first chain.’

Damien left carrying the copied records while Isolde ordered the eastern passage opened under armed guard.
