Villain's Refund System: The Protagonist's Harem Is Mine

Chapter 40: Marked Heir

Black light disappeared behind Cassius’s door, though one residue thread remained visible beneath Damien’s palm through Eye of Reckoning.

It crawled backward across the corridor instead of following the heir, leading toward a narrow servants’ stair beside the training wing.

’He expects me to leave and prepare, damn, which means following this now is either useful or spectacularly stupid.’

Damien handed Bram the blank roster while Mina kept her brass receiver pressed against his cuff.

"Take this to Orren and make him certify the missing entry before it changes," he said, turning them toward the main armory.

"Why are you staring at a wall that recently turned every light black?" Bram asked, clutching the tablet closer.

"He found something reckless and wants us safely elsewhere before touching it," Mina replied, pulling one copper probe from her coat.

"Your faith in my decision-making feels deeply personal this evening," Damien said, reaching toward the hidden stair latch.

"Your decision-making keeps me employed," she answered, shoving the probe toward his hand, "stab this into anything that starts whispering."

’She knows arguing wastes time, good, though receiving anti-whisper equipment should probably concern me more.’

The servants’ stair descended beneath the training hall through dust untouched by ordinary house traffic.

Verdict recoiled inside its sheath when the residue passed under a silver ward engraved with Aldous’s personal crest.

Damien pushed the saber tip across the seal, and gold conductance opened a gap without triggering its alarm.

[Benefactor residue detected]

The stair ended behind the western dueling crest, revealing a cavity cut between two reinforced walls.

Black hooks covered its interior around one burned knee print pressed into the stone floor.

’Cassius kneels here, witnesses are absent along with polished concern, so what makes the heir of House Sterling lower himself?’

He touched Eye of Reckoning against the print before Mina’s probe warmed between his fingers.

The wall vanished from sight, replaced by a memory pulled through residue rather than any human mind.

Cassius knelt inside darkness wearing a torn academy uniform, his younger face bloodied beneath one swollen eye.

A faceless shape stood beyond him where no floor remained, offering three black hooks through an open hand.

"Accept this revision and inherit the protected future denied by Seraphine," it said, each word scraping fresh lines across the vision.

Young Cassius raised his head through visible fear, then pushed one bleeding palm into the offered mark.

"Give me enough power to prevent her mistake from destroying this house," he answered, closing his fingers around every hook.

’He chose it willingly, shit, maybe fear started the bargain, though nobody forced his hand into that thing.’

The vision changed into the gala ward while adult Cassius adjusted its lethal route beneath Damien’s designated seat.

Black residue corrected three lines after his hand withdrew, strengthening the trap beyond whatever damage he intended.

Hallow’s construct appeared next, receiving the same correction after Cassius marked its dormant control core.

’He opens doors and the Benefactor decides how wide the killing becomes, exposing him now tells that faceless bastard I can see everything.’

Damien lifted his hand before the vision reached the present, but one hook clung beneath his fingertip.

Verdict left its sheath by instinct and cut the residue without waiting for his command.

Gold light burned through the hidden cavity, making every black sigil recoil toward the knee print.

[Verdict recognizes hostile authorship]

The system opened above the fading mark while the trial quest rewrote its final line.

’Unknown usually means the system has terrible news and refuses to ruin the surprise, excellent, tomorrow should be relaxing.’

A dagger touched the side of Damien’s neck before he heard anybody enter the hidden stair.

"Move that saber away from the sigil unless you enjoy losing important arteries," a woman’s voice said near his ear.

Isolde stepped beside him after withdrawing the blade, her long red hair flowing over a fitted black reception coat.

Her pale face carried sharp green eyes above a narrow mouth, while gold chains followed one hip through several tiny poison vials.

"Oh, sneaking into Sterling walls with a knife near my neck feels unusually direct," Damien said, keeping Verdict raised toward the mark.

"I knocked twice before deciding manners were wasting my evening," Isolde replied, crouching near the burned knee print without touching it.

’She arrived uninvited through a sealed family stair, damn, Marlowe flirting apparently includes professional trespass.’

One green eye narrowed when the remaining hook twisted toward her shadow across the cavity floor.

"That mark appears inside my execution vision," she said, opening a poison vial above it, "usually behind whoever orders the death."

"You could have mentioned matching murder graffiti before placing a dagger against me," Damien replied, moving his shadow beyond the residue.

"Then you might lie before I inspected your reaction," she answered, spilling one blue drop across the knee print.

The sigil swallowed her poison without changing, then extended another hook toward the gold chain at her waist.

Damien cut it through Verdict before contact, making the entire mark shrink from the weapon’s edge.

"Verdict genuinely frightens this disgusting little mark," Isolde said, interest warming her face while she leaned closer to the blade, "that improves your current value considerably."

"Your compliments keep sounding remarkably similar to expensive acquisition offers," he replied, placing the saber between her hand and its gold tally.

"Only foolish women ignore valuable men holding Legendary weapons," she answered, taking another vial from her coat, "hold it steady while I burn this."

’She really does flirt like a contract negotiation, focus, idiot, the wall still contains hostile fate infection.’

Isolde mixed two drops against Verdict’s flat while Damien conducted gold mana through the reacting liquid.

Purple flame spread over the sigil without touching stone, forcing black hooks into one writhing knot.

The mark released another vision, showing Cassius entering tomorrow’s sealed chamber through a hidden blood route.

Something faceless followed inside his shadow, carrying no stable level beneath its unfinished head.

"That man in the vision resembles your brother," Isolde said, adding another drop when the flame weakened, "shall I poison him tonight?"

"Tempting, though killing Cassius warns the thing behind him before we learn its reach," Damien replied, feeding Verdict more mana.

"Then we keep him breathing until usefulness expires," she answered, smiling when the final hook caught fire, "I appreciate practical restraint."

’That was not reassurance, wow, spending time around Isolde changes the definition of mercy quickly.’

The sigil burned away except for one fragment trapped beneath Mina’s copper probe near Damien’s hand.

[Benefactor mark fragment acquired]

[Trace source concealed]

Stone sealed behind them when the hidden cavity began collapsing around its destroyed residue.

Isolde caught Damien’s sleeve and pulled him into the stair before black fire consumed the knee print.

They reached the corridor as Mina returned from the armory carrying an expression that promised mechanical violence.

Her eyes moved from Isolde’s hand on Damien toward the poison smoking across Verdict’s golden edge.

"Remove your fingers before I invoice Lady Marlowe for contaminating my tempering work," Mina said, taking the saber without permission.

"Your workmanship survived everything, and his arteries remain mostly arranged correctly," Isolde replied, releasing the sleeve with visible amusement.

"Mostly arranged is not any medical category recognized inside my workshop," Mina said, checking his neck before scraping purple residue into a sealed tube.

’They met for six seconds and already sound prepared to fight over laboratory vocabulary, this will become expensive.’

Bram arrived behind her with Orren’s certified roster pressed against his chest, breathing too hard for the short corridor.

"The final guardian never left the registry," he said, displaying a black vacancy where its name belonged, "something erased the entire entry."

"We found the intrusion method beneath Cassius’s private training hall," Damien replied, passing Mina the trapped fragment while Isolde watched his face.

"You found proof against the heir and burned most of it before showing me," Mina said, turning the tube beneath corridor light.

"The proof could watch every person along this corridor," Damien replied, lowering his voice as one remaining hook moved inside the glass, "keep that ugly fragment asleep."

"Naturally your family conspiracy comes alive inside my sample tube," she said, wrapping three copper seals around it.

The system paid the cleared vault route while they walked away from the hidden stair.

’More power before tomorrow helps, though that unknown guardian still entered through a mark Verdict barely hurt.’

A Sterling alarm sounded from the final trial wing before Orren’s tablet finished updating.

The screen showed a sealed chamber viewed from above, with every proper ward glowing silver around an empty arena.

Black fire drew one hooked sigil across its center while guards remained locked outside the untouched doors.

"That chamber requires three blood keys and Father’s direct authorization," Bram said, staring as the mark completed itself.

"Whatever Cassius invited into this house stopped caring about locks," Damien replied, drawing Verdict from Mina’s hands.

The second sigil opened one faceless eye toward the viewing crystal before tomorrow’s Bloodright feed went dark.
