Villain's Refund System: The Protagonist's Harem Is Mine

Chapter 25: Marked Prey

Rain covered Halcrest’s southern corridor when Damien noticed every classroom door had locked behind him.

He slowed beneath one stone arch and checked Mina’s sensor, ’great, every classroom locked after that polite challenge appeared beside my recovery cot.’

The paper had named a training court near the southern statue, though no opponent appeared on its official registry.

Damien folded the notice into his coat and turned toward the crowded central route instead.

’Whoever wants me isolated can follow somewhere cameras exist, come on, coward, earn your dramatic entrance in public.’

A narrow blade passed through the space his neck had occupied before Flicker carried him around the arch.

The attacker wore a gray field cloak above fitted leather armor, with one blank mask hiding every feature except dark eyes.

His lean body moved through a hunter’s low stance, while green liquid covered the blade without dripping onto stone.

[Scripted Hunter]

[Level: 247]

[Aspect: Silent Quarry]

[Benefactor Mark Detected]

"You missed the neck before introducing yourself properly this evening," Damien said, drawing his saber while rain blew through the open colonnade.

"Your recovery records promised considerably slower movement after the Northglass incident," the hunter replied, turning his wrist until green poison reached both edges.

"Halcrest records buildings as safe before monsters hatch under them," Damien answered, backing toward the central training court, "perhaps stop trusting paperwork."

’Keep him talking while students fill those benches, damn, poison that bright probably kills before Stay can delay anything useful.’

The hunter stepped through rain without making sound, then vanished when his cloak matched the wet stone behind him.

’His Aspect erases sound instead of presence, good, Eye can still catch whatever Debt follows the hidden bastard.’

Eye of Reckoning lost the body but kept a faint Debt mark moving toward Damien’s injured side.

He raised Iron Veil around his ribs as the poisoned blade appeared against its surface.

Green liquid hissed through silver mana, eating a narrow hole before Damien twisted away.

[Iron Veil Corroded]

[Poison Contact: Avoided]

"That venom destroys barriers quickly, though your employer silences witnesses even faster," Damien said, Flickering toward the occupied court.

"Run wherever you prefer, Sterling, your wounds leave a trail through every ward," the hunter answered, following beneath his colorless cloak.

’Good, he thinks this remains pursuit, so let him discover the audience after committing to another strike.’

Damien crossed into the training court where sixty students practiced beneath covered galleries around an old founder’s statue.

Several upper-years recognized him and lowered their weapons while recording crystals turned from sparring lanes toward his bloody coat.

Damien counted nine active lenses above the court, ’enough witnesses, good, now make the hunter show every trick before marshals arrive.’

"Hey, clear the center unless anyone wants free poison testing during class," Damien shouted, stopping beneath the statue’s stone blade.

Students scattered as the hunter entered through rain and realized every court ward had already recorded his exposed weapon.

He pulled his hood lower, then lunged anyway through a silence Aspect that swallowed nearby warning shouts.

’He cannot leave after showing his face, fine, desperation makes people predictable, even when murder remains their entire profession.’

Damien placed Sinner’s Brand against the man’s hidden outline and watched red light reveal both shoulders beneath gray cloth.

The hunter cut low toward his thigh, expecting Northglass damage to slow another Flicker.

Damien stayed close instead, trapping the poisoned wrist between saber guard and forearm without touching either edge.

His knee struck the man’s elbow until bone cracked, but the hunter transferred his blade into the other hand during descent.

Green metal swept toward Damien’s stomach, forcing Iron Veil between them at a cost his mana could barely support.

[Flesh Debt: 83]

[Mana Reserve: 41%]

"Somebody trained you properly before wasting that skill on corridor murders," Damien said, headbutting the blank mask until it split.

"You were supposed to remain crippled after surviving that Graveclaw attack," the hunter answered, blood crossing a thin mouth beneath broken ceramic.

"Your employer needs faster updates before sending poisoned idiots into public courts," Damien replied, twisting the cracked arm behind him.

The hunter released one hidden needle from his collar, aiming past Damien toward the nearest recording crystal.

’He wants evidence destroyed, no, that needle carries enough poison for a person, which student did they choose as distraction?’

Damien caught the man’s sleeve and redirected his shoulder before the needle launched.

It struck the founder’s stone chest instead, spreading green rot across a statue that had survived two hundred years.

Students screamed as the stone collapsed behind them, though every recording crystal remained active around the court.

The hunter tore free by sacrificing his broken arm and kicked Damien beneath the ribs.

Pain fed the tally while rainwater carried blood across both men’s boots.

[Flesh Debt: 219]

Damien Flickered through the hunter’s next stab and appeared against his uninjured side, driving the saber guard into one temple.

The man staggered beneath the same statue where seniors had mocked Damien before his re-entry duel.

"Finish it, Sterling, or my people will erase everything after I leave," he said, reaching toward a black capsule hidden behind one tooth.

"You do not choose the exit after missing me this many times," Damien replied, striking the jaw before the capsule broke.

He pinned the hunter’s throat beneath one boot and used his saber to cut every poison vial from the gray cloak.

Imani entered through the northern gate with four marshals, sealing the man’s limbs beneath bright suppression bands.

"The attack, weapon and attempted evidence destruction were recorded from nine angles," she said, collecting the black capsule inside a steel tube.

"Good, keep his mouth locked until somebody checks every tooth," Damien replied, stepping away before anger turned practical advice into execution.

’Killing him here would feel simple, almost convenient, plus the Benefactor clearly expects dead tools to keep secrets.’

The hunter’s poison blade remained on wet stone beneath three containment rings, its green edge smoking against rain.

A woman left the watching crowd after every marshal failed to identify the venom.

’Somebody recognized that poison immediately, damn, either help arrived or another problem wears much better clothes.’

"Do not touch that charming shade of green unless you enjoy dying through your fingernails," she said, opening a black silk fan above one hand.

Isolde Marlowe had wine-dark hair falling in smooth waves below her waist, with green eyes set inside a pale heart-shaped face.

Her tall curved figure wore Halcrest’s black uniform beneath deep red lining, fitted precisely around a narrow waist without hiding either hip.

Five silver poison rings covered her bare fingers, while polished boots reached below both knees beneath an immaculate skirt.

’Isolde, fuck, the villainess who gets executed after Lucas proves she poisoned half her own family.’

She crouched beyond the containment rings and watched green vapor curl toward her jewelry.

"That venom belongs to Marlowe’s sealed execution garden," Isolde said, closing her fan against one shoulder, "I recognize the scent from my future coffin."

The system opened a red line above her composed expression before Damien could answer.

[Death event identified]

[Isolde Marlowe: Execution]

[Time remaining: 8 months, 27 days]

Black residue crawled beneath the captured blade and turned toward Isolde’s nearest boot.

Damien crushed it under Iron Veil before the mark reached her shadow, ’the Benefactor started early again, fine, another victim just found the murder trail herself.’
