Villain's Refund System: The Protagonist's Harem Is Mine

Chapter 32: Mother’s Blade

Cedar oil reached Damien before the armory doors finished opening behind his back.

His body stopped beneath the first silver lamp, ’she used this scent on his practice blade, damn, why does remembering that feel stolen?’

The chamber stretched farther than Sterling residence allowed, with black weapon racks disappearing beneath a ceiling full of pale ward lines.

Old cuts covered every floor tile around one raised circle where a single saber hung inside clear light.

Its black blade remained sheathed, yet a gold tally ran along the scabbard instead of Mina’s familiar silver line.

[Verdict]

[Sealed inheritance weapon]

[Claimant recognition incomplete]

’That is the weapon from Mother’s armory, original Damien saw it once before every family portrait removed her face.’

The doors closed on Cassius’s expression while Aldous allowed only Orren to enter behind Damien.

Orren leaned against his silver cane near the threshold and refused to cross the first scarred tile.

"The armory recognized Seraphine’s blood instead of your registered identity," he said, watching Verdict remain above its circle.

"Should I feel insulted that my dead mother received better access?" Damien asked, keeping both hands away from the weapon.

"You should wonder why a sealed intelligence confused its creator with her son," Orren replied, opening the Bloodright ledger beside his cane.

’Creator, so Mother built an inheritance weapon, yet her name disappeared everywhere beyond these walls.’

Damien stepped onto the first marked tile and felt an old memory strike through both palms.

Small hands held a wooden saber incorrectly while a woman knelt behind them, moving one thumb beneath the clumsy grip.

Her face refused to form, but dark hair brushed his cheek above a laugh carried through cedar air.

’Not my mother, no, this body loved her, and pretending none of that belongs here would be another kind of theft.’

He let the memory stay without claiming its grief, then moved toward Verdict across generations of failed cuts.

One floor scar matched the width of Seraphine’s practice saber, ’she stood here too, damn, even her failure mark survived after every portrait vanished.’

Every scar activated beneath his boots and projected a claimant falling before the raised circle.

Some collapsed under pressure, while others lost weapons to invisible counters before reaching the suspended blade.

"How many earlier claimants survived after touching that suspended scabbard?" Damien asked, watching one old projection leave blood across the final tile.

"Seven reached it during four centuries, though only Seraphine awakened the golden tally," Orren answered, keeping his voice lower inside her chamber.

"Then why did she leave it sealed instead of carrying the weapon?" he asked, stopping one pace beyond the elder’s safe line.

Orren’s fingers tightened around his cane before the old man looked toward the closed doors.

"Your mother refused its succession oath after the weapon rejected Cassius," he said, letting the truth settle between them.

’It rejected the perfect heir, shit, that explains why every portrait forgot the woman who built their precious blade.’

Verdict pulsed above its circle when Damien touched the scar nearest his boot.

Golden light followed his fingers across the old cut, ’the weapon remembers her mana, maybe it called Mother’s name on purpose.’

The system opened one preparation item beside the chamber’s active ward lattice.

[Bloodright ward primer]

[Reduces first-contact rejection from sealed Sterling wards]

[Price: 2,480 System Points]

[System Points: 18,880 → 16,400]

Damien accepted, and cold instructions entered his wrist around a pulse pattern Mina could have explained far less painfully.

’Expensive knowledge says bleed on the floor, wonderful, House Sterling really turned cutting yourself into tradition.’

He drew his tempered saber and opened one shallow line across the heel of his palm.

Blood struck the nearest scar before silver light carried it through every failed claimant mark.

The armory recognized Damien this time and lowered Verdict until its scabbard hovered above his outstretched hand.

[Claimant recognized: Damien Sterling]

[Blood relation: Seraphine Sterling]

[Trial calibration: Level 318]

[Current level: 244]

"That route begins seventy-four levels above your current measure," Orren said, looking toward six doors forming around the raised circle.

"Yeah, the family welcome improved immediately after recognizing my name," Damien replied, closing his bleeding fingers beneath the weapon.

Verdict remained one centimeter beyond his reach while the six trial doors locked into place.

His wrist sensor vibrated beneath the sleeve as Mina forced an encrypted signal through Sterling’s outer wards.

[MINA: Your heart rate jumped. Explain before I visit with tools.]

Damien glanced toward Orren before answering with his thumb near the coat seam.

[DAMIEN: Armory opened. Trial starts above Level 300. Still outside gate.]

[MINA: Scan the lower pulse. Something else just entered your sensor.]

’She found interference through three house barriers, damn, Cassius threatened the wrong workshop genius.’

Damien lowered his hand from Verdict and focused Eye of Reckoning beneath the proper silver ward sequence.

A black pulse moved several layers below it, hiding inside the bloodline rhythm whenever Seraphine’s name appeared.

[Foreign fate residue detected]

[Source: Outside armory]

[Target: Entry gate]

"Orren, somebody attached a second activation beneath the trial sequence," Damien said, pointing his saber toward the leftmost floor scar.

"No outside spell can cross a sealed Sterling blood ward after recognition," the elder replied, striking his cane against the marked tile.

"Then explain why that scar keeps answering somebody beyond this room," Damien said, watching its black pulse tighten.

Orren opened Sovereign appraisal through the cane, yet foreign residue flattened beneath his mana and disappeared.

’It hides from house authority, of course, the Benefactor built this mark specifically for Sterling walls.’

Damien sent Mina one image through the wrist sensor while the primer translated part of its hostile rhythm.

Her answer arrived immediately beneath a warning vibration sharp enough to sting his wrist.

[MINA: Do not enter. The lower pulse reverses every safety delay.]

[MINA: Damien, move away from that circle right now.]

Verdict dropped into Damien’s bleeding hand before he could obey.

The weapon’s sealed weight forced his arm downward as golden light entered every scar around the platform.

[Armory resonance complete]

[EXP gained: 3,507,000]

[Level: 244 → 258]

[Divergence: 25% → 26%]

Excitement hit him beneath the danger, ’fourteen levels from recognition, damn, Mother left one hell of an inheritance route.’

Orren stepped across his safe line for the first time and reached toward the corrupted scar.

"Release Verdict immediately before the gate interprets that contact as acceptance," he ordered, forcing silver pressure beneath his cane.

"It already accepted something else before either of us noticed," Damien replied, feeling the weapon lock around his wounded palm.

The black pulse erupted through every trial door and turned proper silver wards toward a deep red.

Verdict vanished from Damien’s hand, returning above the raised circle while the floor opened beneath his boots.

’Mina said move, yeah, should have listened before the family basement became another mouth.’

Orren caught Damien’s wrist, but a black thread cut between their hands before his fingers closed.

The corrupted gate pulled Damien through the floor alone while six construct signatures awakened beneath him.

[Bloodright Trial entered]

[Safety wards: Inactive]

[Foreign command accepted]

He fell toward a sealed combat chamber as the first Sterling construct raised its blade early.
