Villain's Refund System: The Protagonist's Harem Is Mine

Chapter 6: Re-entry

Halcrest Academy rose above Averill behind twelve black towers, each roof connected by glass bridges crowded with students holding phones.

Damien stepped through the main gate beneath a hundred recording lenses, ’wow, nobody even pretends to be subtle here, bro gets one scary clip and suddenly everyone becomes press.’

His charcoal dueling coat fit close across the shoulders, with silver rank-thread running toward an empty number at the left cuff.

The missing Sterling crest left two small holes beneath his collar, which drew more attention than any jeweled house pin could manage.

’Good, keep looking, Cassius wanted his name on everything I own, so an empty slot can annoy him for free.’

Students opened a path without being asked, though whispers followed Damien past the registration fountain toward Halcrest’s central arena.

A girl near the stairs played his gala aura clip above one palm, then lowered the projection when he glanced across.

"You can keep watching it," Damien said, adjusting his saber against one hip, "the live version costs considerably more courage."

Her friends laughed after he passed, though the girl stared at his empty cuff until another notification lit every uniform.

[Sanctioned blood duel]

[Damien Sterling vs Bram Holt]

[Arena Three]

[Lethal Force: Restricted]

The final condition made Damien slow beside a stone arch, ’restricted? Bram asked for crippling force, then somebody softened it overnight, no, that is bait.’

He opened the full challenge while walking and found a second clause hidden beneath the academy seal.

[Restriction Removed After Mutual Confirmation]

’There we go, he plans to announce that part before the crowd, expecting me to run once every camera starts recording.’

A broad figure waited beneath the arena arch wearing Halcrest’s reinforced dueling coat open across a thick chest.

Bram stood six foot two, his square face sitting beneath short blond hair while a frontline build packed both shoulders.

His silver rank-thread displayed [#164] at one cuff, while an oversized cleaver sword rested against the floor beside his boot.

Three older students crowded behind him, each wearing the pleased expression of somebody arriving early for another person’s pain.

"Well, the Sterling embarrassment finally returned," Bram called, lifting the cleaver onto one shoulder, "I expected your family to hide you after that gala trick."

Damien stopped several steps away and looked at the three phones aimed toward his face, ’he rehearsed that line, damn, let the poor idiot enjoy it.’

"Yeah, hiding sounded peaceful, though your challenge smelled desperate enough to ruin my morning," he replied, resting one hand near the saber guard.

Bram’s friends laughed too quickly before their leader raised a thick palm, then the sound stopped around him.

"You will enter Arena Three, kneel before first blood, then admit yesterday’s display came from a planted ward recording," Bram said, stepping closer.

"Afterward comes the hidden condition followed by lethal force, since crippling somebody only feels brave when paperwork protects you," Damien answered.

The older student’s grin stalled as phones around the arch tilted nearer, catching every part of his silence.

’His stupid face changed before another threat arrived, good, he finally understands that I know the next move.’

"Somebody leaked my challenge before the academy seal even finished processing it," Bram said, looking toward his own clique as anger returned to Damien.

"Nobody needed leaking, your personality only contains three ideas and violence occupies two," Damien replied, walking past his shoulder.

One clique member reached for Damien’s coat, but Bram blocked him with the cleaver’s flat before contact landed.

"Save your confidence for the arena, Sterling, since nobody interrupts once blood touches that floor," Bram warned.

"I read that part too," Damien said, continuing beneath the arch, "try finding a surprise before evening."

The registration hall smelled of leather wraps and healing resin, while duel marshals moved between glowing rule tablets along both walls.

Students pressed behind the barrier rope as Damien approached the central desk, where a tall woman waited in dark academy armor.

Marshal Sera Voss had silver hair cut level with her jaw, a long nose above thin lips, plus lean muscle filling every fitted plate.

A white scar divided her chin beneath one corner of the mouth, and tired green eyes suggested nothing inside Halcrest surprised her anymore.

"Lord Sterling, your opponent requested mutual escalation after accepting restricted force," she said, turning a stone tablet toward him, "refusal carries no Board penalty."

Damien read the obvious warning, then noticed Bram entering behind him with half the academy following through three separate doors.

’The safe choice keeps me unranked, lets him call the gala fake, then preserves my body, absolutely terrible for everything else.’

"Unlock lethal force now, unless Bram mistakes his own request for courage," Damien said, pressing his bleeding thumb against the tablet before Sera finished offering the stylus.

The hall erupted behind him as red light crossed both names, and Bram’s confident stride shortened by half a step.

Fear tightened Damien’s stomach beneath the noise, ’no backing out now, good, let this bastard regret asking before my legs remember common sense.’

"You wanted that condition so badly," Damien said, looking over one shoulder, "why does receiving it change your walk?"

Bram shoved through the barrier gate and planted his cleaver beside the desk, cracking one floor tile beneath its weight.

"Do not confuse restraint with fear, boy, I have crippled fighters carrying better numbers than your entire family bought you," he replied.

Damien felt the body’s old humiliation pull across his stomach, bringing memories of this senior laughing above broken fingers.

’He remembers hurting me, no, breaking the old owner, yet these hands are mine now, which means Bram picked the wrong repeat customer.’

"Keep telling yourself that until the marshal opens our gate," Damien said, removing his coat’s outer clasp.

Sera studied him across the desk before sealing both thumbprints, then handed each fighter a black entry token.

"Medical barriers stop damage leaving the arena, not injuries suffered inside it," she warned, closing the tablet, "death remains possible after either seal breaks."

"Understood, though your warning should face the man carrying a door-sized sword," Damien replied, rolling his bandaged wrist while new mana moved beneath the skin without pain.

"He understands now," Bram said, taking his token, "give him ten minutes before panic reaches those pretty gray eyes."

Damien looked toward the public Board across the hall, where Bram’s [#164] glowed beside his own empty line.

’The Eye should read him before Brand feeds the Ledger, shit, none of these skills have worked once under actual steel.’

A system prompt appeared near his left hand while the crowd poured toward Arena Three’s viewing galleries.

[Duel Quest Detected]

[Opponent: Bram Holt]

[Level: 160]

[Host Level: 63]

[Fatality: 34%]

[Objective: Win]

[Bonus: Reveal the Blood Ledger]

Damien read the ninety-seven-level difference and felt genuine fear crawl cold beneath his coat.

’Level one-sixty, the outline in my head felt much easier before numbers showed up, you absolute clown.’

Mina leaned against the equipment gate ahead, goggles resting above her amber eyes while one grease-marked hand held his repaired saber.

"Your weapon balance was criminal, so I fixed the worst offense before watching you make several new ones," she said, offering the hilt.

Damien drew three inches of black steel and saw a faint silver tally running near the edge, brighter than yesterday.

"You came to watch me get flattened by somebody twice my size?" he asked, sliding the blade home.

"No, I came to see whether my repair survives your terrible decision-making," Mina replied, tightening one loose strap on his wrist.

The gesture lasted only a second, though her fingers checked the old needle wounds with careful pressure before pulling away.

"If he breaks this saber, I will kill you after the healer finishes," she said, stepping back from the gate.

"That seems fair," Damien replied, unable to stop his smile, "please wait until tomorrow if tonight becomes crowded."

Arena Three opened beyond the equipment tunnel, revealing black sand beneath six barrier towers and thousands of occupied seats.

Bram entered from the opposite gate beneath a roar, then raised his cleaver toward Damien’s side of the field.

The public Board flashed above them, placing [UNRANKED] against [#164] while every camera crystal turned toward the empty Sterling crest.

’They came for another humiliation, so let us give them something louder.’

Damien stepped onto the black sand and drew his repaired saber as both arena gates locked behind him.
