Villain's Refund System: The Protagonist's Harem Is Mine

Chapter 38: Verdict

Verdict entered Damien’s palm and pulled every loose drop of blood toward the silver thread around its grip.

The weapon felt warm enough to be alive, though no pulse moved beneath his tightening fingers.

[Verdict]

[Classification: Legendary growth weapon]

[Bearer: Damien Sterling]

[Inherited claim: Seraphine Veyne Sterling]

[First seal: Awaiting acknowledgment]

’Legendary, damn, original Damien died without ever reaching the blade that already carried his mother’s blood.’

Cassius disappeared from the viewing crystal before the weapon chamber opened around Damien and the silent proctor.

Gold light crossed hundreds of wall carvings, revealing claimants whose names had remained beneath their weapons for generations.

Seraphine’s place sat empty near the final column except for a shallow cut recently restored through the recovered seal.

Damien pressed her silver plate into that space, and the wall accepted it with one low chime.

’I barely knew her, though this body remembers waiting near every door she entered, fuck, grief does not care who earned it.’

The proctor lowered its greatblade and knelt before Verdict while ancient armor touched the chamber floor.

"The first seal requires one thousand held Debt without release," it said, exposing the tally near Damien’s guard.

"You waited until after three murder rooms to explain the useful feature," Damien replied, testing the saber through one careful turn.

"A claimant who requires reward before endurance has misunderstood inheritance," the projection answered, returning to its feet.

"Right, dead relatives apparently confuse withholding information with character building," he said, opening the Blood Ledger beside Verdict.

[Held Flesh Debt: 621]

[Held Mana Debt: 214]

[Held Fortune Debt: 190]

[Total held Debt: 1,025]

Gold fire moved across the thousandth tally before spilling through every mark beneath his thumb.

[First seal released]

[Printed Reckoning conductance increased by 20%]

[Verdict creates no Debt independently]

’Good, it improves the payout without inventing free damage, which means this weapon rewards surviving rather than replacing skill.’

Damien released ten Flesh Debt toward a broken plate, and Verdict carried twelve points through its golden edge.

The cut divided silver without shaking his wrist, leaving one bright line across the chamber wall beyond it.

"Mother left me a weapon that makes bad decisions twenty percent more violent," he said, lowering its point from the damage.

"Seraphine called the first seal completely insufficient for any worthwhile claimant," the proctor replied, turning its blank helm toward her restored name.

"Yeah, that sounds more useful than anything this house wrote about her," Damien answered, touching the grip where memory remained warm.

The borrowed scene returned in fragments, showing his mother tempering Verdict beneath blue fire while a small child slept nearby.

She had wrapped silver thread around its handle after cutting her own palm, then whispered one name into the blade.

’Damien, she wanted this blade in my hands before the elders refused her claim, and original me never learned that.’

The weapon chamber opened toward the family vault where Aldous waited alone beneath lowered Sovereign pressure.

His white hair remained perfectly combed above a severe face, though one hand rested hard against a black cane.

"You restored a name House Sterling removed by unanimous judgment," the patriarch said, watching Seraphine’s plate rather than Damien.

"Then your unanimous judgment lost to a sword and one very stubborn dead woman," Damien replied, carrying Verdict into the vault.

"Your mother possessed considerable talent for making survival sound argumentative," Aldous said, finally looking toward the golden tally.

’That almost sounded fond, careful, family warmth inside this place probably comes attached to three blades.’

The old man placed two fingers against Verdict and received a sharp gold spark across his skin.

"It rejected every Sterling claimant after her death," he said, withdrawing the marked hand, "that judgment also included me."

"Maybe the weapon remembered who let the family erase its rightful claimant," Damien replied, keeping the saber between them.

Sovereign pressure deepened for one second, then disappeared before the chamber floor could crack.

"Your insolence resembles hers more closely than current sword work does," Aldous said, turning toward the exit, "improve the useful half."

’An apology will never arrive, fine, Verdict belongs to Mother and me, not some family approval I can beg from him.’

The trial reward opened after Damien crossed the vault threshold beneath every watching elder.

[Bloodright vault route cleared]

[Fatal trial survived]

[Death Refund condition recorded]

[EXP awarded: 12,831,000]

[Level increased: 380]

[SP balance: 13,900]

[Divergence: 27%]

Strength flooded his injured legs before fresh mana pushed the remaining ache away from both ribs.

Orren approached with a measuring prism while three elders whispered behind ceremonial sleeves near the armory gate.

"Your actual measure requires immediate confirmation after this inheritance settlement concludes," he said, placing the prism above Damien’s open wrist.

"Um, does confirmation involve another hostile basement or can we attempt ordinary incompetence today?" Damien asked, watching numbers climb.

"This measurement device has survived two full centuries without a single incident," Orren replied, offended enough to forget Cassius had recently sabotaged older machinery.

The prism reached 380, flashed gold beside Verdict, then printed the result across the family registry.

[Damien Sterling]

[Actual level: 380]

[Ascension Board: 68]

’From thirty-eight to three hundred eighty, damn, Earth me would call this cheating before asking where to sign.’

No elder congratulated him, though several moved away when the saber’s golden tally turned toward their robes.

Vivienne waited beyond the armory doors beside Mina and Bram, all three blocked by a line of house guards.

Mina saw his upright body first, then looked directly toward every bandage instead of the Legendary weapon.

"Move your left arm before I decide that shoulder belongs in my scrap cabinet," she called, raising a diagnostic lens above one eye.

"I survived the impossible room and received affection immediately," Damien replied, rotating the requested joint while guards stared.

"That was an inspection, rich boy, and you still owe me for the illegal message," she said, lowering the lens after his motion stayed clean.

Vivienne’s steel-blue gaze settled upon Verdict, then softened when she found Seraphine’s name restored on the chamber wall.

"Lady Seraphine carried that saber during the northern breach," she said, touching two fingers against her own blade, "House Ashe kept the report."

"House Sterling apparently kept every record except her rightful name here," Damien replied, feeling anger return beneath the weapon’s warm grip.

"Then keep the blade where they must see it," Vivienne answered, formality cracking around a blunt edge, "make every coward remember."

’She knew Mother through battle records, good, ask later when this hallway contains fewer listening relatives.’

Bram opened his velvet case while staring at Verdict from a distance that respected both value and sharpness.

"Please place the Legendary weapon inside its warded slot for transport," he said, presenting a black sheath through both hands.

"It spent twenty years sealed inside this house," Damien replied, fastening the sheath against his own belt, "Verdict walks out visible."

The saber accepted the sheath without protest, though gold light remained across every tally beneath its guard.

[Next Death Flag: Bloodright final ward]

’The Bloodright still counts as unfinished, wonderful, claiming Mother’s blade only unlocked the larger family execution.’

A servant crossed the armory floor holding one black envelope beneath Cassius’s personal silver seal.

"Lord Cassius requests a private audience before tonight’s conclave disperses," she said, offering it without meeting Damien’s eyes.

Mina reached for the envelope, but its ward opened only beneath Sterling blood and burned one sentence above the paper.

[Brothers should speak before the Bloodright decides which of us keeps a future in this house.]

"That private invitation sounds completely free from possible murder tonight," Damien said, closing his hand until the sentence vanished.

Vivienne stepped nearer while her sword remained inside the white sheath against one hip.

"Refuse his invitation until those obvious trial injuries close completely," she said, keeping her voice low enough for the guards to miss.

"He moved before the blood finished drying, so whatever Cassius wants cannot wait," Damien replied, checking Verdict’s grip.

’My brother watched an impossible guardian fail, then asked for privacy, good, fear finally made him hurry.’

Damien walked toward the private training wing with Mother’s saber visible at his side.
