A blast of black lightning flashed out from the paper. Sabrina’s entire body shook violently. Felix immediately pushed her back and hid himself behind the furniture. Sabrina tried to get to him, but her body resisted. She felt black electricity around her soul and stabbed it with a knife whenever she tried to move.
"What have you done to me?"
Felix dusted his sleeves and got up from behind the furniture, moving closer to her. "I have no idea, to be honest. This is my first time using something like that."
"Stop doing this. It hurts."
He frowned slightly and answered calmly. "If I knew how, then maybe..."
"You said you want me. You said you accept my proposal. Then why?" Her expression was contorted by pain and despair. The black electricity weakens slightly. She noticed it quickly and forced herself to stand up.
He took a step backwards, ready to run away again, when ropes of black smoke sprang from her back and embedded themselves deep in the wood of the floor.
Sabrina was dragged back. She attempted to push the thing through, attempting to break the black ropes that held her but it didn’t work. She breathed heavily and looked at Felix. "I promised you everything. You called me a liar. Why?"
"Because you are." Felix turned around, keeping his attention pointed away from her, as he went on talking. "You’ve got nothing to give me. I saw your debt back in that room. This whole house, everything in it, wouldn’t cover half of what you owe. If you can’t even pay back what’s yours to pay, then you offering me everything means nothing. None of it actually belongs to you anymore. You can’t hand out what isn’t yours to give."
"You," she whispered, "are not here for me?"
"Of course not." Felix waved a hand, repelling the suggestion. "I’m here for the house, only. You’re just making this harder than it needs to be. Honestly, I’d be glad if you’d just leave this place."
Sabrina became still. Her head lowered, and her eyes searched the floorboards for an answer. The silence grew heavy for so long that Felix could feel his shoulders relaxing because she seemed ready to leave, but he turned toward her only to discover the truth.
The sight made him freeze in horror. There were thin tear streams coming down her face. Her arm muscles had hardened; blood vessels stood out of her skin. And she was surrounded by a menacing shadow emanating from her entire body.
Felix stepped back in fear. Shit. I pressed the wrong nerve.
You are like the rest of them." Slowly lifting her head, Sabrina looked into Felix’s eyes, which no longer reflected anything kind inside them. "You don’t see me. No one ever does. I offered you everything I had, and all you saw was the house, the gold. You never once tried to look past any of it."
The aura surrounding her grew thicker as it curled away from her shoulders into the still air while the black ropes tying her down creaked against the pressure, breaking into more cracks starting from where they dug into the floorboards.
"I understand now. Every human is the same. Always looking for more. Same as you." The white vapor puffed out of her lips as she started moving, and the ropes held for a moment before snapping under her pressure, growing thinner and thinner with every move she made. "I’m tired. I give up. I’m done."
Felix moved back, drawing back one foot after another while he watched the ropes holding her break one thread after another, leaving him with nothing that could hold her down anymore, no scroll, no card, nothing.
Damn it. Damn it. Damn it. What should I do now? Why does this always happen to me?
He raised arms above his head, and spoke, "Sabrina, why don’t we try and—"
"I will kill you." Her voice sounded sharp across the room. "I will kill you! I will kill her! I will kill every single human who steps into this house!"
Felix gulped. The floor started breaking even further beneath her, the rest of the ropes snapping free one after the other. Felix spun on his heels and ran, his bad leg burning from the pain from the stabbing he received from the card previously. Felix collided with the piece of furniture, stumbled to his feet, and charged for the door. At the entrance he stopped and looked back.
Sabrina moved one more step towards him. And the wooden floor underneath her feet broke with an ominous cracking sound.
"Ahhhhhhh!" Sabrina screamed, her voice piercing the air around her so that the nearest piece of furniture shattered apart into pieces. Her hands spread wide, and the remaining ropes binding her started snapping one after the other, making her free with every step she made. Felix has vanished from the door. The last of the ropes snapped and she launched forward.
Felix ran, veering off into the hallway on his right hand side, leaving a small trail of blood behind due to his wounded leg. There’s always a way, my ass. I did everything right. I told her the truth. She should’ve heard that and let it go, but no. Now she wants me dead. God fucking hell. I should’ve taken her offer more seriously and gone for outside help instead of trying to play hero. What did you actually accomplish, huh? Acting strong, handling it all yourself. Look where that got you, you pathetic loser.
A door came up on his right side, and something inside his chest relaxed at the sight of it. But I don’t want to die. Losers never give up.
He seized the doorknob and shoved, only to have it barely give before holding firm against his attempts to turn the knob. "Open the damn thing. What kind of sicko locks their own door from the inside?"
He turned and saw that Sabrina had already made it down the corridor, her eyes fixed on him. She was no longer walking but was floating in midair, heading directly towards him, her hair and shredded clothes flying behind her as if she no longer cared about the effect it would have.
"No, no, no." Felix rammed his shoulder against the door, making it shake in its frame without managing to knock it open. "No, no, no, I don’t want to die. I don’t want to die, mother God, if you’re actually up there, now would be the time."
He took two steps backwards and rammed the door once more. The lock snapped and he fell on the other side of the door, pain shooting through his ribs and leg again. He scrambled up and tried to close the door in her face, but Sabrina appeared at the entrance before he could reach the handle.
"You will regret coming here," she said softly and lunged.
And then as she crossed the threshold, her soul separated from the body. Dune’s body crashed into Felix, as he caught her.
He was also confused about what just happened. Above him Sabrina’s true form twisted in mid-air, horror dawning in her expression as she looked around, and then she blasted backwards into the corridor and was gone.
