Sabrina turned around and began walking towards the stairs with one hand dipping into her pocket. "Hmm? What could that be?"
She took out the deck of cards and held them in her hand looking around them, there was nothing recognizable there, nothing that could belong to all those years that she had been spending inside this house. She looked through the cards and one fell out of her grasp and fell on the ground.
A Queen of Hearts.
Sabrina furrowed her brow and reached out to pick up the card, then she paused in mid-air and straightened herself up."Don’t you understand? Leave us alone."
Dune quickly grabbed her wrist and stopped Sabrina from continuing. The rest of the cards fell out of her hands scattered onto the floor.
"We are together. Me and Felix. Married."
"He doesn’t want you." Sabrina’s face twisted with anger, her other hand shot out and landed a hard hit on Dune’s chin. Dune’s head snapped to the side but she did not release her hold on the wrist.
"He never said that."
"He did. I heard him say it." The anger in Sabrina’s voice caused her voice to crack with each repetition of her words.
"I’m gorgeous! He wants me!"
She hit him again and again, punches hitting Dune in the shoulder, the ribs, the head, each strike causing a solid thud against her skin. Dune took each blow without moving from her position, feet steady, only swaying back with the force before stopping once more.
Sabrina’s breath began to grow erratic, her movements becoming slower, and then she screamed and kicked at Dune’s stomach. Dune’s body jerked back and her knees buckled as she fell. She coughed, blood spurt out from her mouth.
She lifted her head anyway. Her jaw had swollen dark on one side, a cut splitting her eyebrow and leaking a thin line down past her eye, blood smeared across her cheek where the back of a hand had caught her earlier. Through all of it her eyes stayed steady, fixed on Sabrina without flinching. "Felix gave me my name. He says we’ll make our money together."
"Naive, incompetent, persistent." Sabrina glared down at Dune in anger, trying to wrench her trapped wrist away. The struggle only lasted for a moment before she switched tactics and smiled softly. "Dune, let me go. You’re hurting me."
"Felix doesn’t use those words."
"You know nothing," Sabrina snapped, and kicked again twice at Dune’s chest. Dune rocked back with each kick but refused to be pushed back.
Sabrina walked up until she was standing directly above her, blocking the only little light that was coming to the floor of the hallway. Her face changed again; the rage melted away and gave way to amusement. "Die," she said softly. "Die. Die. Die."
She lifted her leg straight into Dune’s face, her eyes green and bright. Behind her one of the scattered cards began to glow in blue. Then it flew from the floor and smacked right into the other leg, piercing right through the flesh before her foot even got close.
Her balance was lost immediately. She stumbled to the side, turning for half a second just as she fell onto Dune.
Dune’s arms came up around her immediately and pulled her close. "Get out of Felix!"
"No. No, I don’t want to." Sabrina struggled in his arms violently, shaking so hard that they both rattled but Dune did not release her hold. "I want Felix."
Dune observed Sabrina shaking her head in desperation and moved one hand to rest on the nape of her neck. She pulled Sabrina close and kissed her, holding on to her as she convulsed in her arms, Sabrina’s entire body shivering as though something within her was being extracted from a small opening.
The crack blue lines across Dune’s body, pulsating brighter by every second of her continued kiss as she drained Sabrina’s soul from Felix and placed it within herself.
A couple of seconds passed before the tension within Felix’s body gave way. He suddenly pulled away, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. "What the hell."
He glanced around him, trying to piece together the events of the last couple of minutes, the time when he had lost control of his mind and body.
His gaze fell on Dune lying below him, her face puffy and cut, the blood staining her cheeks and jaw line.
"What did I do?"
His heart beat fast upon seeing her face and he tried to reach her cheek but when the skin started to glow with a flash of light, he pulled back quickly. He noticed the card struck into his ankle. He extracted it while gasping and pressed his hand on the wound to suppress the burning sensation of pain.
Dune started getting up slowly while lifting her head first followed by the rest of her body with the help of one arm which was stretched straight. Felix pulled himself closer and clenched his lips to stop from screaming because of pain in his leg. His hand was trembling slightly while being stained in his own blood.
She took his hand in hers and led it closer to her face. For some time she looked at his palm covered in dark drops of blood. Then she turned her head a little bit sideways and opened her mouth and put his hand inside and closed her lips.
"W-what are you—" Felix started to pull away, but she only shook her head and tightened her grip slightly. He released the tension from his arm and stopped resisting. Well, this is the least I can do. It won’t really make any difference at all, anyway.
Her hold on his wrist eased, but his palm stayed flat against her tongue, and she moved slowly, wrapping around his fingers, tracing along the lines of his hand where the blood had pooled thickest. She licked it clean in slow, deliberate strokes, and Felix sat there with his face frozen in some awkward mix of discomfort and a ticklish, prickling sensation he had no name for.
What is she doing? I didn’t sign up for this. Is she thinking about this wrong again, like that time I stuck my hand in to pull out the ore? I should stop this.
Then he caught it, the cracks along her face beginning to glow, a faint blue pulse running through them like veins lighting up one by one. The bruises that lined her face were starting to fade, her skin regaining its smoothness right before his eyes.
No, wait. Is she healing herself? Her core was completely dry last time I checked. She shouldn’t be able to do this. I don’t even feel my own Numen being pulled. So how—
She drew his hand back out of her mouth, the blood gone entirely, skin clean but slick with her saliva, glistening faintly in the orb light.
