Silas kicked the last spider onto its side and rolled his shoulders, scanning the cleared room.
"Clean sweep," he said. "What do you think, Deren?"
Deren was already wiping his hands. "Took longer than it should have."
"Because some of us were standing in the back counting ceiling tiles." Silas glanced at Felix.
Mira turned. "Felix pulled one off me. The one that came around Bron’s side."
"Did it trip?" Silas said.
Deren laughed under his breath and turned away, already moving toward the hall’s far end.
Felix picked his cards up off the spider one at a time, turned them over, and dragged each one across his pants to clean the ichor off the edges. He tucked them back into his pocket and adjusted his pack strap.
Mira opened her mouth again. Felix shook his head once, small enough that only she caught it. She closed her mouth.
The hall opened into a wider chamber ahead, and on the left side a row of tunnels split off into darkness. Small blue ore deposits glittered along the ground near the entrance, scattered like something had cracked open and spilled them there.
Gerrett stopped at the mouth of the tunnels and turned to face the group. "Split into three. Mira, you’re with me. Bron, Felix, you take the left tunnel. Silas, Deren, right side."
Nobody objected. The group broke apart and Felix fell into step behind Bron toward the nearest opening.
The tunnel narrowed quickly, then widened again into a low chamber where the ore deposits thickened along the walls and floor, the pale blue catching what little light came from Bron’s lantern.
"Get to work," Bron said, already crouching toward the nearest cluster.
Felix was already moving. He pulled a small chisel from his pack and worked it into the rock around one deposit, prying it loose piece by piece. Bron, a few feet away, simply gripped the ore with both hands and tore it free of the stone like it was nothing.
Felix lifted his own piece and turned it over once. It felt lighter than it should have. He’d handled enough Numen-rich ore to know the difference in his palm before he ever checked it against a reader.
The Numen inside had thinned down to almost nothing, worn away by time and too many harvests before theirs.
They worked through the first stretch of the chamber together, then split where the tunnel forked, Bron taking the wider path and Felix continuing down a narrower offshoot alone.
The deeper he went, the more that same lightness kept showing up in every piece he pulled. It wasn’t just bad luck or a thin vein. The entire dungeon seemed to be depleting its resources.
"You’re dying... but you’ve lasted longer than anyone expected. I don’t know... if there’s anything I can do."
He didn’t know why that thought bothered him as much as it did. It wasn’t his job to care whether the dungeon lived or died. But something about pulling ore that felt like it was already giving up made the work feel heavier than the chisel in his hand.
Felix kept moving forward, scanning the tunnel ahead, until the rock face narrowed sharply into something smaller. A passage he could just barely fit through if he turned sideways.
He stopped in front of it and crouched at the entrance and peered in. Nothing but pitch black darkness.
He glanced back down the tunnel. No sound from Bron’s direction. He waited a few seconds, listening, then stood and set his pack against the wall.
"There should be something valuable inside." He could taste the Numen from here, faint but real, threading through the stale air like heat off stone in summer. "I can feel it."
Yet his heart told him to go get the others first. Walk back, get Bron, do this properly.
"I’ll just look. If it’s worth it I’ll tell them."
He crouched flat against the ground and pushed through the opening sideways, pulling himself forward on his elbows until the passage widened enough to stand. He straightened slowly, brushed the dust off his front, and pulled three cards from his pocket. He pushed Numen through them and let them go. They rose above his head and held there, throwing a pale glow across the room.
The chamber was average sized, maybe ten metres across, with a low ceiling that sloped downward at the far end. Along the walls stood a row of stone warriors, or what remained of them.
They were carved in full armour, shields raised, swords drawn, though most had not survived. Some had lost their heads, the necks ending in rough broken stone. Others were missing arms or had collapsed at the legs, their upper halves tilted against the wall or fallen entirely. Their armour was carved in detail, overlapping plates and visored helmets, though the faces behind the visors were smooth and blank where they still existed at all. Between the statues the walls were covered in faded markings, long lines of script in a language Felix didn’t recognise, running floor to ceiling in columns that had partially crumbled away.
No Ore or antiques. Nothing he could sell.
He frowned and walked further in.
The cards above his head brightened, their glow sharpening and then trembling slightly, as if something in the room was pulling at them.
"Where is this much Numen coming from?" Then his foot caught something and he lurched forward, barely catching his balance. "The fuck..."
He looked back at the floor. A crack ran across the stone, a few centimetres wide. He crouched over it and heard it before he felt it, a low steady sound of air pressing through from below, thin and continuous. The air coming up through the crack was warm.
He reached up and took one of the floating cards between his fingers. The queen of hearts. He turned it once and then pressed it slowly into the crack.
The resistance pushed back immediately. Wind pressure rose around his fingers, the warmth intensifying as his hand sank deeper. The card glowed brighter, the queen’s face lit clearly against his knuckles. His arm went into the elbow and then further, his shoulder dropping toward the floor as he reached.
Then the Numen started leaving him.
He felt it go, pulling out through his skin like heat through an open window. His shirt was soaked. The card in his fist was drenched, the queen of hearts bleeding at the edges.
He yanked his hand back and sat on the floor breathing.
"Don’t get too excited." He wiped his hand on his pants and got his breath back. His lips curled up into a faint smile. "I know you’re hiding something. And I’m going to find it. This time everything belongs to me."
The other two cards drifted down as his concentration slipped, their glow dimming and steadying again near the floor.
In that low light he saw them. Circular markings pressed into the stone around the crack, each one maybe thirty centimetres across, arranged in a pattern that radiated outward from the fissure.
They were half buried under a layer of compacted dirt and he cleared it away with his palm, brushing in slow passes until the shapes came clear.
The circles were carved deep, their inner edges lined with smaller symbols that repeated at precise intervals, and at the centre of each one sat a shape that didn’t match the rest, asymmetrical and deliberate, like a signature rather than a pattern.
The stone inside the markings was darker than the floor around them, stained through rather than on the surface, and where the markings intersected the lines crossed without breaking, each one running underneath the other in a way that shouldn’t have been possible to carve from a single side.
Felix stared at them for a long moment. "What type of black magic is this?"
