Chapter 90 -90: This is William’s Small Step
Chapter 90: This is William’s Small Step
Early morning, at the Cain Family Mansion.
William woke up refreshed, feeling energized. Whenever he burned the midnight oil, he wouldn’t choose meditation afterward; instead, he would just sleep soundly, which made him feel like both his mind and body were rejuvenated.
William felt that with the improvement of his strength, his energy became more abundant.
In other words, he spent more time burning the midnight oil and less time resting.
‘I wonder if after becoming a legend, I won’t even need to rest anymore.’
William got dressed, picked up the still-sleeping Angela, and went downstairs for breakfast.
She only came back last night in the middle of the night; who knows what she was up to.
Her schedule is more mysterious than a cat’s.
Time is of the essence; there are important things to do today!
—
Royal Academy of Magic, Fifth Magic Workshop.
William stood in front of the building, with Angela obediently perched on his shoulder this time.
The reason being, William rejected the idea of Angela climbing onto his head because, after all, it would be too undignified for a nobleman in the bustling environment of the magic academy.
Perching on the shoulder was just right, after all, many mages also have magical beasts as pets!
Even so, along the way, this little white bat still attracted quite a few curious glances.
William didn’t mind, he directly headed towards the Fifth Magic Workshop.
The intelligent life of the workshop detected William’s approach and automatically opened the workshop’s gate.
“Respected Mr. William, hello, welcome to the Fifth Magic Workshop.”
The cold and mechanical voice sounded in William’s ear.
William entered, and casually asked the intelligent life:
“Where is Bernie now?”
“Mr. Bernie is currently in the third-floor magic rune laboratory.”
William nodded and went straight to the third floor.
By now, the second floor of the workshop was no longer as desolate as it was when he visited last time. Several figures were busy in the laboratory, paying no attention to William passing by.
After all, only those with permission can enter the workshop alone.
However, the intelligent life of the workshop seemed to have no reaction to Angela, who was curiously looking around on William’s shoulder. Maybe this function wasn’t installed?
On the third floor, William saw Bernie’s figure, busy at the operating table in the laboratory, engraving something on the magical instruments.
William gently pushed the door and walked in, approaching Bernie.
Seeing him completely focused on engraving runes on the instruments, William didn’t disturb him with words and silently watched Bernie’s engraving technique.

Bernie, immersed in the engraving of the runes, completely oblivious to the changes around him, focused all his thoughts on the engraving pen in his hand.
At this moment, Bernie’s figure in William’s eyes was like those calligraphy masters from his previous life.
His strength was restrained yet not lacking, his posture poised yet not exaggerated, as if holding the reins of a thousand horses in his hand.
When Bernie finished engraving the rune with great satisfaction, William spoke up:
“Impressive, you are truly worthy of being the youngest intermediate runemaster in Canlight City.”
Bernie wasn’t surprised and put down the engraving tool, saying:
“Alright, we’ve met again. No need to flatter me like this.”
“I didn’t expect you to come today, I just finished tidying up the lab a few days ago, I was just about to notify you.”
“Haha, so I’ve taken the initiative to come to you!”
Talking to a close friend, both of them were more relaxed.
William looked at the rune Bernie had just completed and asked:
“Is this… a Circulation Rune?”
“Huh? You figured it out?”
Bernie was somewhat surprised, not because he underestimated William, but because the Circulation Rune was a relatively rare and obscure rune. It was usually used in medium to large-scale magic arrays to guide the flow of magic power, and most mages didn’t bother to specialize in this rune.
William nodded. Even in his previous life, he might not have been able to recognize it. But in this life, as an arcane practitioner, William had been persistently studying runic knowledge. Combining his current knowledge with his insights from his past life, William’s proficiency in runic magic was now quite impressive.
William nodded and said:
“I can tell that this is a Circulation Rune, but Bernie, it seems you’ve made a lot of modifications to it?”
“Yes.”
Bernie pointed to the completed Circulation Rune in front of him and said to William:
“This is my recent research direction. I’m trying to alter the Circulation Rune to minimize the loss of magic power during its flow.”
“The object I’ve engraved this rune on is a component of a medium-sized magic array. I want to reduce the consumption of magic power in the magic array as much as possible by minimizing the loss.”
“I remember you were originally researching civilian enchantment products, right?”
William looked at the enchanted component that Bernie had just completed and inquired.
“Yeah, so I’m looking for inspiration here.”
Bernie shrugged, completely indifferent, and shared his experimental ideas with William.
“You know, nowadays, when enchantment products are designed, they often aren’t initially intended for civilian use. They are usually applied in military weapons and magical research. So I want to gain inspiration from magic array design research first and then try to make breakthroughs in civilian enchantment products.”
“I see!”
William understood these things very well. After all, civilian enchantment products were only a recent concept, with very few specific applications, such as magic stone lamps and a few other types. Even the most widely used magic stone lamp strictly speaking wasn’t an enchantment product; it was just a special stone that emitted light, with a bit of a convergence rune added to it. An apprentice mage could make a bunch of them in a day.
“Do you want to give it a try?”
Bernie smiled at William.
“Here, I have something interesting to show you!”
William naturally wouldn’t refuse. He had come here today to show “Self-Recharging” runes to Bernie and to gain the support of Bernie and Joseph Dahr.
Taking the precious pen-shaped runic engraving tool from Bernie’s hand, it felt smooth and easy to handle. William tried it and found that the conduction of his own magic power seemed unimpeded, demonstrating that it was a high-quality product with the addition of mithril and various special materials.
Without hesitation, William took out a depleted elemental crystal from his storage ring, picked up the engraving tool, and began slowly engraving the “Self-Recharging” rune on it.
Bernie stood beside William, originally thinking he might need to guide William a bit, as he knew William’s level of proficiency from before: solid foundation but not high enough. But soon, Bernie realized that there was no need to remind William of anything. Although William’s engraving process seemed somewhat lacking in proficiency and his technique wasn’t quite smooth, these were just minor issues that could be corrected with practice.
Throughout the entire engraving process, William didn’t encounter any issues with his technique.
The “Self-Recharging” rune was quickly engraved, as William had practiced it countless times. It wasn’t a complicated rune, and the entire engraving process didn’t take more than fifteen minutes.
“Very impressive, I didn’t expect you to improve so quickly!”
Bernie exclaimed sincerely, feeling happy to see his friend’s progress.
“Enough about that. Here, do you recognize the rune I’ve engraved?”
William handed the engraved elemental crystal to Bernie with a smile.
“This is?”
