Mason Lawson flipped through the other pages of the data logbook. It recorded the basic information and data of many people, both male and female.

’What on earth was Simon Vaughn trying to do by recording all this data before he died? What kind of experiment was he conducting? My own mother was part of his experiment... Did Grandfather know about this?’

The endless questions were almost the last straw, threatening to crush Mason Lawson.

His gaze grew increasingly dark as he said to Neil Kane, "As soon as possible, investigate the current whereabouts of the other people in this logbook. Also, aside from the basic information, find an expert to decipher the other data in this book that we can’t understand. Remember, this must be kept strictly confidential. Absolutely no one can know!"

Neil Kane asked cautiously, "Does that mean... Miss Vaughn can’t know either? If she’s not supposed to know, I’ll make sure to report to you only when she’s not around."

Mason Lawson said grimly, "Right now, we still don’t understand the relationship between Simon Vaughn, my grandfather, and my mother. Of course, Eve can’t know about this. This stays between you and me. Got it?"

Neil Kane nodded solemnly.

Just then, a message came in from Eve Vaughn.

She had probably gotten impatient and was urging him to hurry back to the car.

Mason Lawson was about to leave and let Neil Kane handle the cleanup.

But just then, Neil Kane suddenly asked, "Mr. Lawson, if... if Miss Vaughn’s father turns out to be your mother’s killer, or if there was some other deep-seated grudge between them, what will you do?"

Mason Lawson’s dark pupils trembled. He clenched his fists, struggling for control, and said, word by word, "Until we have a definitive answer, don’t make such pointless assumptions."

With that, he strode out.

Back in the car, Mason Lawson had already composed his features, making sure Eve Vaughn couldn’t see that anything was wrong.

"Mr. Lawson, I was just sitting in the car, and I’ve been thinking about something."

Eve Vaughn looked at him earnestly, her eyes dark and bright.

Mason Lawson asked as he drove, "What is it? I’m listening."

Eve Vaughn said, "I don’t know how to manage this company, and I have no idea how to run it. Anyway, since your father won’t let you go to the Lawson Group anymore, I’ll just give it to you! You can use it to make a comeback."

She was completely serious, and though her words were naive, Mason was inexplicably touched.

He freed a hand to take hers, holding it in his palm. "I appreciate the thought. I can help you manage the company for now, but after you graduate, the Vaughn Family’s company has to go back to you. I’m a man. I’m not going to rely on a woman to make a comeback."

Eve Vaughn felt reassured, but she couldn’t help but wonder if Mason Lawson was just saying that to protect his male pride and dignity.

After all, she couldn’t imagine how he could possibly make a comeback without the Lawson Family or sufficient capital.

As if sensing her confusion, Mason Lawson’s lips curved into a smile. "Don’t worry. I have plenty of assets overseas—enough for you to live lavishly for several lifetimes. No need to worry about me, okay?"

Eve Vaughn’s eyes widened. ’Enough to live lavishly for several lifetimes... just how much money was that?’

’Well, it didn’t really matter. She could work hard and earn her own money in the future. She definitely wouldn’t be a burden to Mason.’

While waiting at a red light, Mason’s mind was still on the abandoned laboratory.

He glanced at the girl beside him, who was absorbed in her phone, and asked casually, "By the way, was your father a scientific researcher? We found an old, abandoned laboratory today while taking inventory at your family’s company."

"He was." Eve Vaughn’s voice filled with a hint of pride. "I was still little back then, but I know my dad used to win a lot of awards. I think it was... for some kind of genetic experiments. I don’t get the specifics, but anyway, it was very advanced stuff! I suspect I do so well in my studies and get a scholarship every year because I inherited his brains!"

Mason Lawson listened quietly, lost in thought.

He confirmed, "So, the experiments your father conducted were in genetics? Related to medicine?"

"Yeah, something like that," Eve Vaughn said, a little embarrassed. "I was only in elementary school at the time, so I really don’t remember clearly. But you could try to find the articles my dad published in international journals."

Mason Lawson nodded meaningfully. That was indeed a good idea.

’I have to figure out what kind of research Simon Vaughn was doing before he died. Only then will I know what kind of experiment he conducted on my mother. Then, I can find experts and researchers in the relevant field to interpret the data.’

At this point, Eve Vaughn belatedly noticed that he was acting a bit differently today. "That’s strange. Why did you suddenly ask about my father?"

A strange light flickered in Mason Lawson’s eyes, gone in an instant. He replied, his expression unchanged, "It’s nothing. I just saw the lab today and was reminded that after your father passed away, it was abandoned and turned into a storage room. It just seems like a shame."

Eve Vaughn agreed. "A man like my uncle could never match my father’s accomplishments. He doesn’t have my dad’s talent, and he was jealous of his success. He completely deserves what’s happened to him!"

Mason Lawson, however, was lost in deep thought. ’If my mother didn’t die... then where is she now?’

To test this theory, Mason Lawson slipped out of the house late that night, after Eve Vaughn was sound asleep.

Neil Kane had already arranged for a driver and some workers. The group headed to the Lawson Family cemetery.

This was a private cemetery purchased by the Lawson Family, where only those on the family register were buried.

Mason Lawson’s biological mother had not married into the family, but because she had given birth to him, the old man had still permitted a grave to be built for her in a remote corner.

The Lawson Family had long been opposed to cremation, so their tradition was burial, to keep the body intact.

Upon arriving at the cemetery, Mason’s men had already knocked out the guards.

Neil Kane whispered, "Mr. Lawson, I had a hacker disable the security cameras half an hour ago. The old man won’t find out what we’re doing here."

Mason Lawson’s face was hidden in the deep darkness of the night. He led his men and walked slowly to his mother’s headstone.

Gazing at the beautiful, gentle woman on the headstone, Mason Lawson said in a low voice, "Mom... please don’t blame me."

Then, he turned to the men he had brought with him. "Begin."

Soon, the men began to move the headstone and dig into the earth below.

Mason Lawson stood a short distance away, his hands clenched into tight fists behind his back, watching as the truth drew ever closer.
