Dante climbed the heavy stone staircase. With every step he took, the blistering, suffocating heat of the magma forges faded.
The air rapidly cooled. Within twenty steps, the ambient temperature went from a volcano to a crisp, biting chill.
By the time he reached the stone archway marking the entrance to the third floor, his breath was pluming into thick white clouds. Frost actively formed on the edges of the [Sun-Forged Cuirass].
He stepped over the threshold.
The environment was a sprawling, endless sub-zero tundra. There were no walls. There was no ceiling. A violent, shrieking blizzard whipped across the flat expanse of blue permafrost, completely blinding his vision past thirty feet.
The wind howled with actual physical force, rattling his gold armor and pushing against his chest like a solid wall.
The system interface slammed into his vision. The holographic text was rimmed with jagged ice crystals.
[Spire of Ascension: Abyss Difficulty]
[Floor 3: The Glacial Tundra]
[Floor Modifier Active: Sheer Cold]
[Warning: Environmental temperature is significantly below survival parameters. Target drains 150 HP every second. All movement speed is reduced by 15%.]
Dante looked at his health bar.
[-150]
[-150]
[-150]
The numbers ticked away with terrifying speed. His massive 9,100 health pool was large, but taking a hundred and fifty damage every single second meant he would be dead in exactly one minute if he just stood there.
The environmental hazard was a brutal, uncompromising gear check.
A tiny flash of silver light illuminated the blinding white out of the blizzard.
Aura popped out of her pet-space. The tiny Doom Harbinger hovered next to his shoulder, her three starlight tails whipping wildly in the aggressive wind.
She let out a sharp, resonant chime.
[Skill Activated: Resurgence Wave]
A pulse of concentrated Aether washed over Dante. The massive 4,565 point heal instantly snapped his health bar back to maximum.
"Keep that on a tight rotation," Dante yelled over the howling wind. "The cold is ripping through my base mitigation."
Aura chimed in agreement. Her heal was percentage-based and bypassed all system restrictions, but it had a hard ten-second cooldown.
In those ten seconds, Dante would lose 1,500 health to the environment. As long as she didn’t miss a beat, he could survive the room indefinitely.
But the Spire wasn’t just going to let him stand in the snow.
The dense permafrost thirty feet in front of him violently cracked. The sound of shattering ice echoed loudly over the blizzard. Five massive fissures tore open in the frozen ground.
Colossal hands made of solid, jagged blue glacier ice reached out of the fissures, gripping the edges of the frozen dirt and pulling themselves up to the surface.
[Floor Boss Spawn: Glacial Titan]
[Tier: Silver]
[Level: 15]
[HP: 20,000 / 20,000]
There were five of them. They stood twenty feet tall, their bodies carved entirely from deeply compressed, ancient blue ice.
They didn’t have faces, just smooth, glowing blue visors. They wielded crude, massive warhammers forged from entire frozen stalactites.
The system interface updated violently, flashing a red warning prompt directly over the Titans’ heads.
[Abyss Difficulty Modifier Triggered: Absolute Fortitude.]
[Effect: The Glacial Titans receive a 100% bonus to their maximum Physical Defense rating. Highly resistant to physical kinetic force.]
Dante stared at the prompt.
A 100% bonus to a Silver-tier boss’s physical defense. The Zenith Protocol’s combat engine relied entirely on mitigation scaling.
If a monster’s defense stat exceeded a player’s attack power by a certain threshold, the system defaulted to dealing exactly one point of chip damage per hit.
The Titans were effectively invulnerable to standard physical attacks. A normal Level 15 Warrior would completely shatter their weapon trying to swing at these things.
The Spire expected the challenger to rely on high-tier fire magic to melt the armor, or use complex environmental traps to crack the ice.
Dante didn’t have fire spells. He was a pure physical damage dealer.
He looked at the five massive, invulnerable ice giants.
Dante just laughed.
"The system thinks defense matters," Dante said, his voice easily carrying over the wind.
He didn’t draw the [Crimson Edge]. The Silver-grade broadsword would bounce right off them.
He held out his right hand. The black, jagged brand on his wrist flared violently, burning with a heat that defied the sub-zero tundra. Thick, light-absorbing smoke erupted from his palm.
The smoke rapidly solidified into the massive, ugly shape of [Voidsever].
The primordial greatsword felt incredibly cold in his grip, but it wasn’t the environmental frost. It was the absolute cold of a cosmic vacuum.
The weapon hummed with a low, predatory vibration, actively devouring the ambient white light of the blizzard.
Dante pulled up the weapon’s passive trait in his mind.
[Passive Activated: Absolute Severance]
[Description: Voidsever exists partially outside of standard digital reality. Attacks made with this weapon ignore 100% of the target’s physical and magical armor. Defense stats are rendered entirely void.]
The five Glacial Titans let out a synchronized, digitized roar that vibrated the permafrost beneath his iron boots.
They raised their massive ice hammers and charged. Their heavy footsteps caused localized tremors, kicking up massive clouds of snow.
Dante stepped forward, meeting the charge.
He didn’t use a Zenith-tier skill. He didn’t need a massive damage multiplier. He just needed to hit them.
The lead Glacial Titan swung its massive stalactite hammer in a brutal horizontal arc, aiming to smash Dante entirely off the frozen platform.
Dante didn’t use [Blink Step] to dodge. He gripped the dark bone hilt of Voidsever with both hands, planted his boots, and swung the black blade directly into the path of the incoming hammer.
There was no sound of shattering ice. There was no kinetic resistance.
The black blade passed straight through the massive ice hammer like a ghost passing through a wall.
It sheared the weapon cleanly in half, continuing its arc directly into the Glacial Titan’s torso.
[100% Armor Ignored.]
The system interface hitched for a fraction of a millisecond.
The Glacial Titan’s massive physical defense buff was entirely bypassed. Voidsever treated the unyielding, super-compressed glacier ice exactly the same as it would treat an unarmored Level 1 beginner.
Dante’s base attack power, currently sitting at over 1,800 points without any buffs, dealt unmitigated, absolute true damage.
[-3,800!]
The Glacial Titan didn’t stagger. It froze completely in place. A perfectly smooth, black line appeared across its waist.
A second later, the top half of the twenty-foot-tall boss slid cleanly off its bottom half and crashed into the snow.
The massive health bar dropped by twenty percent in a single, standard swing.
"Too easy," Dante muttered.
He didn’t stop moving. He used the momentum of the swing to pivot, bringing the heavy black blade up in a clean, vertical arc directly into the falling Titan’s head.
[-4,200! Critical Hit!]
The black blade sliced straight through the boss’s core. The Glacial Titan violently exploded into millions of silver polygons, completely deleted from the arena.
[Target Eliminated: Glacial Titan]
The remaining four Titans stopped their charge. The basic combat governing them hesitated, entirely unable to process how their invulnerable frontline tank had just been deleted in two basic swings.
"Who’s next?" Dante asked, resting the flat of the black blade against his shoulder.
The Titans roared, their aggro completely locking onto him. They didn’t swing their hammers this time.
They realized physical melee was a death sentence. They slammed their free hands into the permafrost.
A massive array of razor-sharp ice spikes erupted from the ground. The spikes were ten feet tall and completely unavoidable, tearing through the snow and racing directly toward Dante in a massive, sweeping wave.
Dante triggered [Meteor Stride].
He vanished in a flash of white-hot light, completely bypassing the spike wave. He left a ten-foot-wide wall of superheated plasma cutting straight through the sub-zero tundra.
The intense heat of the plasma trail clashed violently with the freezing environment. It generated a massive, blinding cloud of thick white steam that instantly filled the center of the arena, completely obscuring vision.
Dante materialized directly behind the second Glacial Titan.
He swung the primordial blade in a heavy, horizontal sweep, cutting cleanly through the back of the Titan’s knees. The 100% armor penetration sheared the thick ice legs off instantly.
The massive boss dropped to the ground with a heavy crash. Dante stepped up onto the boss’s falling back and drove the black sword straight down through its skull, pinning it to the permafrost.
[-5,000! Critical Hit!]
[Target Eliminated: Glacial Titan]
The steam cloud provided perfect cover. The remaining three Titans were blindly swinging their massive hammers, desperately trying to hit a target they couldn’t see.
Dante moved through the fog like an executioner.
He didn’t use stamina-heavy skills. He just relied on [Blink Step] to reposition quickly, letting Aura handle the constant environmental health drain with her ten-second percentage heals.
The cold was biting, ticking his health down by 150 points a second, but Aura was an infinite battery.
He materialized next to the third Titan. He stepped inside its guard and delivered a clean thrust directly through its chest cavity. The Titan shattered.
He blinked to the fourth. He ducked under a wild, sweeping hammer strike and delivered a horizontal decapitation strike. The head flew off, and the body dissolved into polygons.
The fifth Titan managed to spot him through the fading steam. It raised its hammer and brought it down in a desperate, two-handed overhead smash.
Dante raised Voidsever.
He didn’t use [Aegis Deflection]. He just blocked with the raw, indestructible material of the cursed sword.
The massive ice hammer slammed into the jagged black metal of Voidsever. The hammer instantly shattered into a million pieces.
The kinetic force traveled up the Titan’s arms, staggering the massive boss backward.
Dante stepped forward and drove Voidsever completely through its frozen core.
The final Glacial Titan dissolved into light.
[Target Eliminated: Glacial Titan x5]
[Floor 3 Cleared.]
[Time: 1 Minute, 45 Seconds.]
The howling blizzard instantly died. The wind stopped blowing. The temperature snapped back to a comfortable, neutral baseline.
Dante dismissed Voidsever. The black smoke retreated into the brand on his wrist. He was breathing easily.
He hadn’t broken a sweat. The Abyss difficulty had tried to lock him behind a mathematical wall of infinite defense, and he had simply walked right through it.
He walked over to the center of the tundra, where the five bosses had dropped a massive pile of glowing loot.
He activated his [Band of the Void-Walker] and vacuumed the silver coins, massive chunks of compressed ice, and high-tier crafting materials into his inventory. Sitting in the pile was another small, glowing stat crystal.
[Item Appraised: Glacial Core]
[Tier: Consumable]
[Effect: Permanently grants +5 to all base stats.]
Dante picked it up and crushed it in his palm. The cool energy flowed into him, stacking onto his previous buffs.
"Three floors down," Dante said, dismissing the blue window.
At the far edge of the frozen tundra, the snow melted away, revealing a heavy set of spiral stairs carved from solid gray stone.
The stairs rose upward, disappearing into the dark ceiling of the Spire.
Dante didn’t hesitate. He jogged up the spiral stairs, leaving the frozen wasteland behind. He was making incredible time.
