The mob of angry players didn’t back down.
Dante didn’t even flinch as the frontline warriors raised their swords and charged.
He didn’t draw the [Crimson Edge] and he didn’t activate [Meteor Stride].
He simply reached his hand back, grabbed the flamboyant bard by the collar of his ruffled silk shirt and effortlessly hurled him forward.
"Ahhhh!" Casanova shrieked as he went completely airborne.
He flew right over the head of Dante and crashed face first into the dirt. He landed squarely in the center of the charging mob.
"Get him!" the lead warrior yelled.
The mob instantly swarmed the fallen bard. The sound of fists, boots and dull practice weapons hitting the leather pants of Casanova echoed loudly down the street.
"Not the face! Not the hat!" Casanova screamed from the bottom of the dogpile. "The cheek! It was only the cheek!"
Dante brushed his hands off and casually stepped to the side giving the mob plenty of room to operate.
He had zero intention of fighting fifty people over a guy who got himself cursed by being an idiot.
"I thought you were going to defend him."
Dante turned his head.
Standing a few feet away and leaning casually against the wooden post of a nearby stall was Lyra.
The leader of the Crimson Lotus guild was watching the beatdown with a look of mild amusement.
Her sleek red leather armor stood out sharply against the grimy backdrop of the Outpost.
"I said they had three seconds to walk away," Dante said. His tone was perfectly flat. "I did not say what I was going to do if they stayed."
Lyra let out a short laugh. "Pragmatic. I like that. You are not playing the hero."
"I tried playing the hero," Dante replied. He watched a mage repeatedly hit Casanova with a wooden staff. "It got me stabbed in the back."
The smile of Lyra faded slightly.
She pushed off the wooden post and walked over to stop just outside of striking distance.
Her high perception stat was likely screaming at her. She was trying to read his hidden level and attributes.
"You have been incredibly busy since we last spoke," Lyra said. She kept her voice low so the surrounding crowd couldn’t hear.
"The forums are on fire. Vanguard’s Legacy is in total disarray. Silas is bleeding members by the hour because people are terrified you are going to start targeting the general population of the guild."
"I only target the people in my way," Dante said. "If they leave the guild, they are not in my way."
"Well, you just put yourself in the way of someone else," Lyra noted. She crossed her arms.
"Embercraig Canyon was not just a farming spot for Vanguard’s Legacy. It was a shared territorial claim."
"By dropping an army and a Gold boss in the middle of it, you severely disrupted the local economy. And you drew the attention of Valerius."
Dante raised an eyebrow. "Valerius."
He knew the name. Everyone in Aethelgard knew the name.
Valerius was the leader of the Legion of Blades. They weren’t a standard gaming guild.
They operated like a highly disciplined militaristic cult. They didn’t care about PR or sponsorships. They cared about total absolute control.
If Silas was a corrupt politician, Valerius was a warlord.
"The Legion is moving," Lyra warned. Her voice dropped to a serious whisper.
"They do not care about your Titan kill or your shiny armor. They care about order. You are a chaotic variable, Dan. You are a threat to the stability of the server."
"Valerius has officially designated you as a high-priority target."
"Tell him to get in line," Dante said completely unbothered. "He can take a number behind Silas and the hit squads of the Sakura Nation."
"You do not understand," Lyra sighed. She shook her head.
"Valerius is not Malric. He does not rely on numbers or simple suppression scrolls. The Legion possesses a unique guild-level artifact. A Suppression Array."
"It does not just lock you down, it aggressively normalizes your stats. It strips away high-tier gear bonuses, nullifies passives, and forces you to fight at a standard baseline."
"If they catch you inside that array, your Zenith-tier damage output will not matter."
The eyes of Dante narrowed slightly.
A stat-normalizing array was a massive problem.
If they stripped away his [Sun-Forged Cuirass] bonuses and the passive immunities of Aura, he would just be a standard Level 19 Warrior. He would be vulnerable.
"Why are you telling me this Lyra?" Dante asked. "I turned down your contract."
"Because an enemy of my enemy is a useful distraction," Lyra said bluntly.
"As long as Vanguard’s Legacy and the Legion of Blades are busy hunting you across the map, Crimson Lotus has free rein to secure the high-tier resource nodes in the outer zones."
"I am offering you sanctuary. If you step into our territory, the Legion will not follow. My guild can protect you until the heat dies down."
Dante looked at her. It was a smart play. She wanted to use him as a shield while she built her own empire.
"I appreciate the warning Lyra," Dante said. "But I do not need protection. I rely on my own skills."
"Your funeral," Lyra shrugged. She stepped back into the shadows of the alleyway.
"Just remember, Valerius does not take prisoners. If they catch you, they will camp your respawn until your capsule fries."
She vanished into the crowd. Her crimson armor blended into the chaotic sea of players.
Dante turned his attention back to the street.
The mob had finally dispersed. The fifty female players were walking away. They brushed off their hands and looked highly satisfied.
Lying in the center of the dirt street was Casanova.
His feathered hat was crushed. His ruffled silk shirt was torn in three places. His health bar was sitting at a miserable two percent.
He clutched his lute which had miraculously survived the beatdown. He stared up at the violet sky with empty eyes.
Dante walked over and looked down at him.
"Did you learn your lesson?" Dante asked.
"I have forty-two kisses left to go," Casanova wheezed. He did not move a muscle. "The system says bruises do not negate the objective. I just need a short nap."
Dante shook his head. The guy was an absolute idiot, but his dedication to a terrible quest was almost impressive.
Before Dante could tell the bard to get up, a sound shattered the ambient noise of the Outpost.
It wasn’t the celestial trumpets of a World Boss kill. It wasn’t the golden chime of a global announcement.
It was a harsh blaring mechanical siren. It sounded like an air-raid warning.
The siren was so loud it actually made the wooden buildings in the Outpost vibrate!
Players stopped dead in their tracks and covered their ears. The NPC merchants froze. Their artificial routines completely interrupted by the system override.
A massive blood-red holographic interface violently projected itself across the entire sky above Outpost 404! It completely blocked out the violet clouds.
[CRITICAL SERVER EVENT: CONTAINMENT BREACH]
[Location: Wyrmrest Caverns (Sector 404 - North)]
[Hazard Level: Catastrophic]
Dante stared at the red text. A catastrophic server event on day one.
[Details: A sealed dimensional fracture has ruptured within the Wyrmrest Caverns. Highly concentrated ’Void-Blight’ is currently leaking into the local ecosystem.]
[Warning: Void-Blight actively corrupts and mutates local entities, drastically increasing their level, aggression, and base stats. If the breach is not sealed within 3 hours, the corruption will reach Outpost 404, resulting in the permanent deletion of the safe zone.]
Panic instantly erupted in the streets.
Permanent deletion of the safe zone.
If Outpost 404 was destroyed, every single low-level player tied to this respawn point would be scattered into the high-level wilderness without protection. It would be a slaughter.
But the system wasn’t finished. The red text shifted to offer the counterweight.
[Global Objective: Enter the Wyrmrest Caverns and seal the dimensional fracture.]
[Event Modifier Active: All experience gained within the Wyrmrest Caverns is multiplied by 200%. All loot drop rates are increased by 50%.]
[Completion Reward: The player or party that successfully seals the breach will receive an exclusive server-unique Title and a Gold-tier Loot Chest.]
The panic in the streets instantly vanished. It was replaced by a wave of raw unfiltered greed.
Two hundred percent experience. Increased drop rates. A Gold-tier chest.
"A double EXP event," a warrior nearby shouted. He drew his sword. "Forget the boars! We are going to the caverns!"
"Party up! Need tanks and healers for the Wyrmrest push!" someone else screamed over the siren.
The entire Outpost immediately mobilized.
Thousands of players who had been terrified of the wilderness just a minute ago were now sprinting toward the northern gates. They were desperate to farm the mutated monsters and claim the massive completion reward.
Dante watched the human tidal wave rush past him.
"Void-Blight," Dante muttered.
He had fought Void-corrupted monsters in Aethelgard. They were absolutely miserable to deal with.
The Blight granted them passive health regeneration and massive damage resistances.
Sending thousands of under-geared Level 5 players into a cavern full of mutated mobs wasn’t a farming opportunity. It was a meat grinder.
But Dante wasn’t under-geared.
A Gold-tier chest and double EXP was exactly what he needed to push his level out of the starter-zone bracket.
Dante turned away from the rushing crowd. He didn’t head for the northern gate. He walked directly toward the central plaza where the massive floating crystal monolith sat.
He bypassed the talent queue and stepped right up to the Outpost Elder.
The NPC was standing rigidly. His glowing white eyes were locked onto the red warning text in the sky.
"Elder," Dante said. He stepped into his field of view.
The eyes of the NPC snapped down to Dante.
The scripted blank expression was gone. It was replaced by the same look of genuine urgent panic the system had shown when Dante returned the tarnished locket.
"Outworlder," the Elder said. His voice trembled slightly. "The old seals have failed. The Blight... it hungers. It will consume this sanctuary."
"I read the sky," Dante said. "I am going to the caverns. But I need to know how to actually seal the breach. The system prompt did not offer any mechanics."
The Elder looked at Dante. His glowing eyes scanned the [Sun-Forged Cuirass] and the black brand of [Voidsever] on his wrist.
"Steel and fire alone cannot mend a tear in reality," the Elder said.
He reached into his flowing gray robes and pulled out two heavy rolled-up banners.
They were made of a strange iridescent silver fabric. They were attached to short iron poles.
He handed them to Dante.
[Item Received: Aetheric Ward Banners x2]
[Tier: Quest Item (Unique)]
[Description: Banners woven with highly concentrated Aether. They must be physically planted on opposite sides of the dimensional fracture to initiate the closing sequence.
Banners possess a 60-second arming timer once planted. If a banner is destroyed during the arming phase, the seal will fail.]
"You must plant these at the source of the leak," the Elder instructed. His voice was grave.
"But be warned. The Blight actively defends itself. The moment you place the first banner, the corruption will summon its guardians. You must hold the line."
"I have got plenty of practice holding the line," Dante said. He stored the banners in his infinite inventory.
He turned away from the platform and started walking toward the northern gate. The siren was still blaring.
"Hey! Wait up!"
Dante kept walking.
"Big guy! Seriously, wait!"
Dante sighed. He stopped just short of the heavy wooden gates. He turned around.
Casanova was jogging toward him and limping slightly.
His hat was gone and he had a massive digital black eye, but he was grinning brightly.
"What do you want?" Dante asked.
"I saw you talking to the Elder," Casanova said. He panted as he caught up. "You got the hidden quest items did you not? The sealing mechanism."
"And if I did?" Dante asked. His eyes narrowed.
"Then you are going to need a party," Casanova declared proudly. He puffed out his torn silk shirt.
"I am a Level 18 Bard. I offer unparalleled utility, incredible crowd control and moral support. Plus, you saved my life back there. I owe you. I am officially declaring you my new Big Brother."
Dante stared at the flamboyant idiot. "I do not need a party. I especially do not need a bard."
"Ah, but Big Brother, you are going into a Catastrophic-level event zone!" Casanova insisted. He pulled his lute around his back.
"The mobs in there are going to be hyper-aggressive. You need someone to manage the aggro, play the support buffs and carry the loot!"
"I have infinite inventory space," Dante deadpanned.
Casanova blinked. "Wait, really? That is incredibly unbalanced. Still, I am coming with you. It is double EXP man. I am not missing out on this."
Dante considered telling the guy to get lost. But he realized it probably wouldn’t work.
Casanova was exactly the type of annoying player who would just follow him anyway. He would pull unwanted aggro and cause problems.
If he was in the party, Dante could at least track his health bar and tell him to shut up.
"Fine," Dante said. He sent a party invite. "But you stay out of my way. If you pull a mob you cannot handle, I am not bailing you out."
"You will not regret this Big Brother!" Casanova cheered. He accepted the invite.
Dante turned and walked out the northern gate. He headed into the dark twisting path that led toward the Wyrmrest Caverns.
He didn’t know it yet, but the mutated monsters weren’t the only hazard waiting for them on the road.
Five miles ahead, positioned perfectly at a narrow chokepoint leading into the cavern entrance, a detachment of eighty heavily armored players was waiting in ambush.
They all wore the silver and blue tabards of the Legion of Blades.
And they were waiting for Dante.
