The night air in the Tang estate felt thinner, charged with a restless energy that kept Yilan pacing the floor of her private chambers long after the moon had reached its zenith.

Shen Yu didn’t answer immediately. He stepped into her personal space, his scent of sandalwood and crisp morning air enveloping her like a physical weight. He reached out, his fingers grazing the line of her jaw with a lingering touch that sent a jolt through her core.

Suddenly, he channeled his Qi, invoking the Celestial Fox Veil. A shimmering, crimson-tinted mist swirled around Yilan, blurring her features. When the light faded, her magnificent, ethereal beauty had been dampened into that of a simple village girl with black hair and brown eyes, still pretty, but unremarkable enough to vanish into a crowd.

Shen Yu then turned the technique upon himself. His striking white hair darkened to a chestnut brown, and his piercing golden eyes shifted to a soft, scholarly hazel. His sharp, predatory features softened into the face of a wandering scholar.

Yilan stared at his transformed visage, her eyes wide. Another secret of his inheritance, she realized, her heart thumping. Shen Yu produced a small bronze mirror from his storage ring and held it up for her. She studied the stranger in the reflection, feeling a bizarre sense of relief at the anonymity.

"Now what?" she asked, a small, tentative smile playing on her lips.

He led her through a concealed postern gate, bypassing the main watch entirely. Tucked away in a thicket near the estate’s edge, two spirited horses stood waiting, their breath huffing in the cool morning air.

They mounted and rode in a rhythmic gallop, leaving the stone walls of Thousand Waves City far behind as they ascended the winding mountain paths.

As the city shrank into a mere speck in the valley below, the stifling silence of the estate was finally replaced by the rushing wind and the rhythmic beat of thundering hooves.

"You’ve planned this well," Yilan called out, her hair whipping behind her like a silken banner. "A secret gate, a hidden path... have you been sneaking out of the estate this whole time, Yu’er?"

Catching the moment her guard lowered, Shen Yu smiled. "Actually, I’ve been trying to refine that boldness. I’ve even taken up poetry over the last few days."

It was a blatant lie, his time had been spent on dismantling clans and cultivating with his beauties, but in the pursuit of the heart, truth was a flexible thing.

"Oh?" Yilan looked at him, her eyebrows arching in surprise and genuine interest.
