"Shiru!" Zhiwei beamed, completely oblivious to the sudden drop in temperature, turning to his companion. "Look! Brother Lin is back from the capital! The rumors were true!"

Shiru pushed his spectacles up the bridge of his nose with a single, elegant finger.

His eyes, the color of crushed jade, swept over Ji’an.

They took in her slightly disheveled hair, the gray cloak, and the faint, lingering scent of the Spices.

"Indeed," Shiru smiled, a perfectly crafted expression that did not reach his eyes. "I am relieved to see you in one piece, Martial Uncle Lin. The Eastern Wastes are famous for being notoriously harsh. Though it seems you have returned with an aura that is even more... vibrant than before."

Shiru’s eyes gleamed with a dark, subtle triumph.

He gestured gracefully down the long, shadowed aisle stretching behind Ji’an.

"I believe the martial arts codices are located three aisles down, Zhiwei, in the restricted elemental section," Shiru lied smoothly, his tone the picture of helpful companionship. "I recall seeing a glowing golden binding that matches the description. Why don’t you go secure it, while I remain here to... catch up with our esteemed Martial Uncle?"

"Perfect! I’ll be right back! Do not leave, Brother Lin, we have to finalize the hotpot menu!" Zhiwei cheered, turning on his heel and sprinting down the aisle, his heavy boots echoing loudly until he disappeared behind a maze of towering shelves.

The moment Zhiwei’s footsteps faded into the distance, the atmosphere in the aisle shifted violently.

He pressed the smooth, cold, rigid edge of the golden artifact firmly against her waist, right above her hip bone, pinning her in place.

The closeness between the two was suffocating.

She could smell the scent of rare, imported sandalwood ink and cold mint radiating from his green silk robes.
