"This is the last of them," Min-ho said as he walked with a girl in his hands.
As he reached Im-hee and Ji-su, he placed the girl at Im-hee’s feet, then remained squatted for a moment.
"Excuse me," a voice rang in.
Min-ho looked up. A man was approaching from Im-hee’s side. He was one of the people Min-ho had rescued. He was now awake. And so were the others behind him, who couldn’t take their eyes off the cavern with the giant Spector.
"What?" Min-ho asked.
The man paused, then he spoke.
"Is there a plan to get out of here?" he said, eyeing the Second Tier Spector.
Min-ho looked down. A quick and sinister contemplation caressing his thoughts.
He shook the thought off and got onto his feet.
"There is one," he turned to the group of people behind the one talking to him. Their Z-Eyes hovering varying numbers above as they watched them.
"But we’re not acting on it until I find..."
"Sae-wee!" Im-hee called out.
Min-ho paused, then he turned to the path leading to the acid pool. There, he saw Sae-wee, Dok-su and Jang-book dashing toward them.
Min-ho walked up to them, then he asked, "What happened?"
"Dok-su is fine," Im-hee whispered to Ji-su.
Sae-wee came to a halt in front of Min-ho, panting hard.
Dok-su and Jang-book did the same upon arrival.
Min-ho’s brows furrowed as he wondered what was going on.
"They’re coming," Sae-wee said through ragged breaths.
Min-ho’s heart thumped and whispers rose behind him.
"Then we have to go now," he said, turning to the other Z-Streamers. "Listen to me."
They stood still as Min-ho talked.
"Those of you that have a strong stomach, I need at least five of you to stay here and help me with something. Those of you who don’t, head into that pathway and keep going till you reach the exit. Make sure you don’t move from that point on and make sure you aren’t seen by the queen."
They still didn’t move, watching Min-ho like dummies.
"Well, go," he said, fighting back the urge to yell.
They stuttered, then began to head for the exit. A couple stayed behind, awaiting Min-ho’s orders.
Im-hee led Ji-su toward Min-ho.
"You two follow them. Keep them in check and make sure you aren’t seen," Min-ho said to Im-hee.
She nodded reluctantly and did as told, then led Ji-su to the path with cocoons.
"Also, keep your eyes up. Don’t look at the cocoons," Min-ho said, his voice solemn and shaken.
He didn’t wait for a response before turning to Sae-wee, Dok-su and Jang-book.
Looking at them, Min-ho didn’t know if it was right to tell them to do anything more.
They each looked tired and worn out, covered in sweat and dirt, and sporting a skin color that suggested they had no blood in their body. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
Jang-book looked the worst of them all.
He scratched his thumb as he spoke, "Dok-su, you and Jang-book follow the others and wait for us."
Dok-su nodded.
Min-ho turned to Sae-wee, staring at her arm wrapped in torn clothes. His demeanor fell upon seeing it.
"What do we need to do?" she asked.
Min-ho hesitated for a moment, then he turned to the strangers waiting for him, before peering beyond them, staring into the cavern.
"We have to distract the queen," he answered, then began to walk to the Z-Streamers he helped.
Sae-wee followed behind him.
"I don’t really have time for pleasantries, so I’m just going to get straight to the point," he said to them. "I’ll need you all to go in pairs of two and fetch the cocoons with Z-Streamers that didn’t survive."
The Z-Streamers exchanged glances and shifted upon hearing this.
Sae-wee lowered her gaze, the weight of what he said sinking in.
Min-ho paused, then turned to Sae-wee.
"How long do we have before the rest of the Third Tiers get here?" he asked.
"Jang-book put up several stone barriers. So we should have two minutes at best," she responded.
"Good enough," Min-ho said.
"We’re racing against time here, so one from each pair should do the trick." Min-ho pointed. "You’ll stack them there, at the top of the slope."
The Z-Streamers turned to where he was pointing.
"That’s it, now go," he said, and they hesitated, but they gathered their courage and rushed into the pathway of cocoon horrors.
"We’ll have to get one as well," Min-ho said, following behind the Z-Streamers. Though his soul was screaming at him, at what he was about to do, he tried to ignore the inhumanity of it all.
There was jo other way.
"Right," Sae-wee said, shadowing him.
It didn’t take them long to gather four cocoons filled with human remains.
Twice did a couple of them throw up, yet they managed to gather them here before a minute.
Min-ho peered at the path leading to the acid pool. The Spectors would come crashing through any moment now.
"All of you go down the path of cocoons and join the others, now," Min-ho said, and they began to sprint out.
"Join them," he told Sae-wee without turning to face her.
He then began to walk to the edge of the slope.
"You’re planning on staying and pushing the pile, aren’t you?" Sae-wee said, her words heavy with dread.
One of the Z-Streamers had heard, and he halted at the entrance of the cocoon tunnel.
"Get down as fast as you can. Once there, I’ll push it down and follow behind," Min-ho explained, staring at the queen making her rounds.
"The Spectors will be here any second," Sae-wee argued.
"For crying out loud—"
"Excuse me." One of the Z-Streamers walked in, his gaze on the cocoons for several seconds too long. He lowered hi gaze and then saud, "I noticed you wanted a way to bring it down."
Min-ho and Sae-wee turned to face him, anxious for where he was going with this.
"I have an Affinity that lets me pull on anything I touch for some distances."
Min-ho’s heart thumped. He turned to the pile of cocoons, then to the path the Spectors would be rushing in at any moment. Then his sights returned to the Z-Streamer.
"Well, what are you waiting for?" Sae-wee said.
***
Immediately after Min-ho, Sae-wee and the Z-Streamer with a pulling Affinity arrived at the end of the tunnel where the others waited for them, Min-ho had given the command to dump the cocoons down the height.
A slushing sound resonated in the distance.
Min-ho peered out the tunnel. In front of him was a pile of eggs on top of a pile of debris, which made visibility difficult. But from the corner, he could see the hole high on the wall where the slope exit had been.
Below it, the pile of human mush rested on the floor. And approaching was the Spector queen.
His gaze lingered for a moment, his soul still screaming.
’No one deserves this,’ he thought with indignation.
He steeled his nerves then turned to the people waiting on him.
"This is our chance," he whispered. "Go as fast and as quietly as you can to the exit. Don’t break open any eggs and don’t make a sound."
Once he was done, the Z-Streamers began to walk out of the tunnel as quietly as they could.
"Go," Min-ho whispered to his team—save for Sae-wee, who waited for him.
Noticing her, he sighed, then grabbed her wounded arm and pulled her along.
"We don’t want to get separated," he said, aiming his remark at how Im-hee held Ji-su, and Dok-su held Jang-book.
"Right," Sae-wee said.
They made their way around the queen quietly, using the pile of eggs and debris as cover.
While they maneuvered around the eggs for the exit, everyone kept their eyes on the queen... well, everyone who could watched as the queen sucked down the pile of blood and entrails poured on the floor.
Looking at it, Min-ho felt something inside him rile up. And it wasn’t his stomach, but a feeling of disgust for himself.
Sae-wee noticed his lingering stare, and she opened her mouth to speak.
But just then, a noise pulled her gaze to the location of the queen.
Her heart began to thump when she saw the Third Tiers pour out from the hole high on the wall.
They fell onto the queen, while some caught themselves on the wall.
As they fell, some crashed into several eggs.
"TTTAAAA!" the queen cried out.
The sound came as both a surprise and a shock to the Z-Streamers that one of them slipped and fell into one of the eggs.
CRACK!
Min-ho’s heart stopped when he heard the sound from behind him.
The queen turned to their location.
"TTTTAAAAAAAAA!" it screamed again.
Min-ho’s eyes widened.
"RUN!" Min-ho screamed at the top of his lungs.
The Z-Streamers didn’t waste time. They rushed into a stampede, dashing with thundering footsteps as they ran for the exit.
Min-ho tightened his grip on Sae-wee’s arm and pulled her along.
They ran as fast as their legs could carry them, and so too did the Spectors behind.
Min-ho looked over his shoulder, and discovered the Spectors were closing in.
’Damn it!’
