- Chapter 1: The Z-Tower
The tremors did not cease, making Min-ho’s chest to tighten. He struggled to keep his balance while fighting back the fear that was etching up his mind. Savior wasn’t fazed, so he shouldn’t be fine.
Within the second, the ground began to move and Min-ho could feel a sense of vertigo as it did. It didn’t take him long to realize the ground was rising, as the walls seemed to be going down.
Savior got onto her feet and pinned her gaze to the sky, completely unaffected by the vibration of the floating ground.
Min-ho struggled to keep his balance as he made his way closer to Savior, afraid he would fall if he stayed at the edge.
Though the the ascent was slow at first, it gradually picked up speed. And the vibrations had quelled, so the ascent was smooth and relaxing.
Looking at levitating platform with glowing streaks across its surface, Min-ho couldn’t help but marvel at the fact that this ascending device was still functional.
Then again, a lot of things in the Z-Tower no matter how abandoned or ruined still managed to function, just like the latrines Savior mentioned a while back.
Though it didn’t make sense, Min-ho felt it had something to do with the Z-Tower, and not the ascending technology itself.
Turning his sight upwards, he felt a bit of uneasiness overcome him when he saw that they were getting closer to the roof.
Not long after, the floating platform reached its peak, perfectly aligning with the gap in the roof with a grinding sound.
Taking a step forward, Min-ho was at a loss for words when he saw the entirety of the ruined city from the top.
This was a very high point, much higher than the duration of the ascent foretold. It was even higher than the building they had spawned from.
Inching to the edge, Min-ho held firm as the feeling of vertigo intensified.
He looked down, only to regret it a second later when a sensation of nausea washed over him.
Taking in a deep breath, Min-ho walked backwards and began to take in the city. He tried to keep his focus, while ignoring the biting wind crashing into him from all sides.
As he peered, he see a good portion of the city, mostly because the moon was out, shining its purple light on the world.
Looking into the distance, Min-ho could see Spectors roaming the streets, scaling buildings and engaging in combat with one another.
Above, there were Spectors as big as houses slowly hovering. The mere sight of them made him shiver, but he ignored this feeling.
Though he knew this temple would protect them, he didn’t feel the need to test it, so he quickly ran his gaze across the city, looking for what he wanted so they could make like a tree.
It didn’t take him long before he spotted several buildings with massive glowing icons above them. Similar to the counter that once hovered above the temple.
Min-ho’s stomach twisted in a knot when the memory of the chaos that the counter caused surfaced in his mind.
He shook his head and pushed those thoughts aside and returned his focus to the buildings with icons on them.
One icon was a flag, another was a symbol of two swords crossed like an X. Then there was a skull, a mountain and lastly, a map.
The map in particular caught Min-ho’s attention. He had found what he was looking for.
’The Treasure Hunt Event.’
Each of the icons indicated that the area had an Event. For new Z-Streamers, these Events meant the difference between life and death, because if chosen wisely, an Event could provide a Z-Streamer with enough Coins and gear to better their chances of survival.
These Events ranged from claiming as much territory as possible in the Event Zone, to slaying a specified number of Spectors, to fighting other Z-Streamers to the death.
Out of all of this, the Event that required Z-Streamers to kill each other yielded the highest reward. Which despite its evil nature, had led many Z-Streamers to flock to it every time it was available.
Besides this event, every other Event either gave low rewards. And if it gave higher rewards, the difficulty curve would skyrocket. Which would result in the guaranteed death of the participants.
The only Event that was an anomaly to all others, was the Treasure Hunt Event.
This event required Z-Streamers go through a series of puzzles with little to no Spector confrontation in order to find the Treasure Chest housing a plethora of rewards.
The catch was that the number of Z-Streamers that could partake in this event was limited. Which meant they had to get there first.
Thinking on this, he continued to scan the cityscape, in search of another Treasure Hunt Event. As he did so, his gaze briefly flickered past one of the glowing Event markers. It jittered just for a second before stabilizing. He frowned, then rubbed his eyes.
He peered at the icon, but nothing happened.
Ignoring this, he continued to scan for another Treasure Hunt Event, a failed attempt.
Turning back to the only Treasure Hunt Event, he began to feel a sudden sense of dread in the pit of his stomach.
"Did you find it?" Savior asked, walking up to his side.
She was rubbing her arms from the cold, despite having worn a blue long sleeved shirt. Which was splattered with blood.
Min-ho wanted to wonder if she was seeing the future of their conversation again, but he thought against it considering it was obvious why he was here. Every Z-Streamer wanted the same thing.
"I did, but there’s a problem," Min-ho said, not once taking his gaze off the Event’s location.
Savior squinted her eyes, trying to deduce what said problem was. When she looked around, her eyes widened in realization.
"Oh, this is bad."
