Damien stood behind me in the shower, his eyes drinking in every curve of my wet skin. His lips found the sensitive spot on my neck, pressing heated kisses that traveled down to my shoulder and traced a path along my spine.

His hands explored the length of my back with deliberate slowness until his palms cupped my backside. A low rumble escaped his throat, the sound vibrating against my skin.

Returning to the bedroom, I found Damien awake and on his phone, his expression serious. I sat beside him on the bed, sensing the gravity of whatever conversation he was having.

After he hung up, I immediately asked what was wrong.

He explained that his contact from the Duskclaw Pack Pack had called with troubling news. Something was very wrong, though they couldn’t specify exactly what.

When I pressed for details, he revealed that my mother had been hospitalized and her condition appeared critical. The prognosis wasn’t encouraging.

The news hit me like a physical blow. I knew immediately that I had to return, regardless of the complications that awaited me there.

Damien mentioned that Marcus would be present, but I couldn’t let my mother face whatever was happening surrounded by people who didn’t truly care about her. She needed me.

He agreed that we would all make the trip, but I worried about bringing Caleb into potential danger. Damien suggested we stay at a hotel in the nearest city, where I could return each night and he could ensure our safety. He offered to bring the nanny as additional support.

As I moved to the wardrobe to begin packing, the full weight of the situation crashed over me. After five years away, I might be returning only to watch my mother die. The guilt of my absence during those years threatened to overwhelm me, but I pushed it aside. All that mattered now was being there for her when she needed me most.
