Elena’s POV

Years had passed since everything changed, and I stepped out of the master bathroom that morning, steam still clinging to the mirror behind me. My long blonde hair hung damp down my back as I made my way into the spacious walk-in closet. I selected a black and purple athletic top with matching compression leggings, pulling on socks and my favorite running shoes.

Standing before the mirror, I gathered my hair into a high ponytail, the motion exposing the intricate mark on my neck where a rose intertwined with a wolf in permanent ink on my skin. The symbol of my bond with this pack, with him.

Downstairs in the dining room, chaos had already begun.

"Mom, please make dad stop," Caleb’s voice rang out in exasperation. "He keeps picking on me."

I paused at the bottom of the stairs, watching my son’s frustrated expression. "Dad, it’s barely past sunrise. Can we keep the volume down?"

Damien sat at the head of the table, his dark eyes twinkling with mischief. "I wasn’t picking on anyone. I simply mentioned that he’s acting like a complete butthead."

"You do realize you’re both essentially the same mental age," I said, walking over to plant a soft kiss on the forehead of the baby girl secured in her high chair beside Damien.

"Exactly why this is so entertaining," Damien replied, his grin widening.

"I’m not entertaining anyone," Caleb protested loudly. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

I held up my hand, cutting through their banter. "Enough from both of you. Keep this up and you’ll both be spending the night in the kennels with the other animals."

Caleb’s eyebrows shot up. "Don’t you mean with the wolves?"

"Same difference," I said, shooting Damien a pointed look that made his expression shift to mock offense.

Damien extended his hand across the table toward my son. "Alright, your mom has spoken. Truce?"

"Fine," Caleb sighed, reaching out to shake it. "Truce."

The kitchen staff appeared with our breakfast, setting plates of eggs, bacon, and fresh fruit before us. The domestic routine felt surreal sometimes, considering how different my life had become.

"What’s on your agenda today?" Damien asked between bites.

"Nothing too structured. Briar and I are planning to explore the pack territory, maybe take some photographs. It’s time I put that photography degree to actual use."

"Sounds perfect," he said.

Caleb looked up from his plate hopefully. "Can I skip school and come along? Why do I have to sit in a classroom when I could be learning about pack land?"

"Because I said you’re going to school," I replied firmly.

"Spoken like a true mother," he muttered.

"Better than calling you names," I countered.

Greta appeared in the doorway, her timing impeccable as always. "I see our happy family is already in full swing this morning."

"These two never disappoint," I said, gesturing between Damien and Caleb.

"Did we really expect anything different?" she asked with a knowing smile.

"Not really," I admitted.

"I’ll be working around the packhouse today if you need anything, Luna," Greta said.

"Thank you, Greta."

After breakfast concluded, Damien gathered his keys to drive Caleb to school. He kissed both Briar and me before heading out, his hand lingering on my cheek for just a moment longer than necessary.

I cleaned six-month-old Briar’s face and hands, wiping away traces of the mashed banana she’d managed to spread everywhere except in her mouth. After changing her into fresh clothes, I secured her in the stroller by the front entrance and we ventured outside into the crisp morning air.

The pack members we encountered along our path greeted me warmly.

"Good morning, Luna," called out a woman tending her garden.

"Good morning," I replied with a wave.

"Beautiful day, Luna," commented a man heading toward the training grounds.

"It certainly is," I agreed.

This treatment had become second nature over time. When this pack first learned I was Damien’s second chance mate, their excitement had been overwhelming. They’d witnessed his heartbreak when his first mate chose a vampire over him, watched him struggle through that rejection. So when they realized I had no intention of abandoning him, their relief and joy had been palpable.

The acceptance hadn’t been immediate for me. Learning to receive such respect and kindness had taken considerable adjustment. But now, walking through the territory felt like moving among extended family. I’d made it my mission to learn every pack member’s name, insisting they treat me as one of their own rather than placing me on some untouchable pedestal. While they’d never quite managed to call me by my first name, they’d lost their initial fear of approaching me casually.

They’d welcomed Caleb just as completely. Despite him not being Damien’s biological son, the pack treated him as their future leader. Damien had formally declared him heir, and the acceptance had been unanimous.

Briar and I eventually reached the town’s edge, where I’d been hoping to explore. I maneuvered the stroller carefully through the treeline until we arrived at a peaceful stream that wound through the forest.

Briar had dozed off during our walk, so I draped a light blanket over her stroller to shield her from the dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy. With my camera in hand, I found the perfect vantage point and began capturing the serene landscape before us.

The water moved gently over smooth stones, creating a soft soundtrack that mingled with birdsong from overhead branches. Through my lens, I framed the interplay of light and shadow, the way morning mist still clung to the water’s surface. This was exactly what I’d been searching for.
