My Fated Alpha's Cruel Game

Elena’s POV

The familiar creak of the packhouse door announced my return from afternoon classes. I barely had time to drop my backpack before I spotted Damien and Gage stationed in the living room like a welcoming committee. Their serious expressions immediately put me on edge.

"Oh crap. Am I in trouble?" The words slipped out before I could stop them.

Damien’s eyebrows lifted in surprise. "What makes you think that?"

Heat crept up my neck as I shifted my weight from one foot to the other. "In my experience, when people are sitting around waiting for me like this, it usually means I’m about to get hauled off to the Principal’s office or dragged before some Alpha for punishment."

"You’re not in trouble," Damien assured me, though his tone remained grave. "But we need to discuss something important."

My stomach twisted as I made my way into the room, settling onto the couch so I could face both men directly. The tension in the air was thick enough to cut with a knife, and I found myself bracing for whatever bombshell they were about to drop.

Damien leaned forward, his hands clasped tightly together. "I received a concerning report today."

"About those suspicious men lurking around campus?" I interrupted, unable to keep the knowledge to myself any longer.

His eyes widened. "You already know about this?"

I nodded grimly. "I spotted them today during my break between classes. They were being pretty obvious about photographing every woman with long blonde hair. The really disturbing part? I recognized their faces from Marcus’s pack. They’re definitely scouts."

Gage cursed under his breath, running a hand through his hair. "So he knows you’re here."

"Actually, no." I shook my head firmly. "That’s exactly why he sent scouts in the first place. If Marcus knew for certain where I was, he wouldn’t waste time with reconnaissance missions. He’d march right up to our front door himself. The fact that his people are taking random photos proves he’s still fishing for information."

Damien’s expression darkened. "Maybe you should consider taking a break from classes for a while. Just until this situation resolves itself."

"Absolutely not." The refusal came out sharper than I intended, but I didn’t soften it. "I’ve waited years to get into college, and I’m finally living my dream. Some creepy scouts aren’t going to chase me away from my education. Besides, I’ve been successfully avoiding Marcus’s people for years now. I can handle a few photographers on campus."

Gage studied my face intently. "Are you completely sure about that assessment?"

"Trust me on this," I said, meeting his gaze steadily. "They haven’t shown up in any of my actual classes or tried to approach me directly. They’re casting a wide net, hoping to get lucky."

"But they’re specifically targeting women who match your physical description," Damien pointed out. "Long blonde hair seems to be their primary search criteria."

I could see where this conversation was heading, and I immediately raised my hands in protest. "Before you even suggest it, I’m not cutting my hair or dyeing it some ridiculous color."

"What about wearing a wig?" Gage suggested hopefully. "Something with dark hair, maybe shorter?"

"Not happening." My tone brooked no argument. "I refuse to change my appearance because of him."

Gage let out a frustrated laugh. "You really are determined to be difficult about this, aren’t you?"

I couldn’t help but smirk at his exasperation. "I’m not being difficult. I’m being practical. I refuse to let that controlling bastard continue dictating every aspect of my life. I’m not his pack member anymore, remember? Even if those scouts do manage to identify me, they have no legal authority to drag me back to his territory."

"But Marcus himself could come here," Damien warned. "Once he confirms your location, nothing’s stopping him from showing up in person."

I shrugged with more confidence than I felt. "So what if he does?"

"What about your condition?" Damien’s voice dropped to a whisper, his eyes flicking meaningfully toward my still-flat stomach.

"I’ll tell him the baby belongs to someone else," I said simply. "He has no right to know what I’ve been doing since I left his pack. Besides, I’m not showing yet, so there’s no immediate visual evidence."

Damien shook his head. "Your scent has already started changing. Marcus will pick up on that shift immediately. He’s not stupid."

"Then I’ll stick to my story about the father being someone else," I repeated stubbornly.

"And who exactly are you planning to name as this mysterious father?" Damien asked. "Keep in mind that you’re using my surname at the college."

I felt a flush of embarrassment. "I can explain that easily enough. I took your name to make it harder for Marcus to track me down. Look, I really appreciate that you both want to protect me. It means more than you know. But this level of concern isn’t necessary. I can handle whatever comes my way."

Damien didn’t look convinced. "I hope you’re right about that."

"I need to get started on my homework," I announced, grabbing my bag and heading for the stairs. "We can continue this discussion later if needed."

The truth was, I wasn’t nearly as confident as I’d made myself sound. The appearance of Marcus’s scouts had rattled me more than I cared to admit. Fear was clawing at my insides, whispering all the terrible things that could happen if they actually managed to identify me. But I couldn’t let Damien and Gage see that terror. They’d already done so much for me, provided me with safety and support when I had nowhere else to turn.

If this situation escalated, I’d find a way to handle it myself. No matter how terrifying the prospect might be, I was determined to protect them from any fallout. It was my turn to be the strong one.

After reaching my room, I took a long, hot shower, hoping the steam would wash away some of my anxiety. I changed into comfortable pajamas and settled at my desk, spreading out textbooks and notebooks in preparation for several hours of studying.

But as soon as I opened my first assignment, an uncomfortable sensation crept over me. The hair on the back of my neck stood up, and I found myself glancing repeatedly toward the window. Something felt wrong. It was as if unseen eyes were tracking my every movement.
