Corbin escorted me toward the mess hall, though the space appeared nearly deserted since most personnel had already finished their midday meal and returned to their duties.

We collected our food portions and settled at an empty table where Corbin began outlining the operational structure of this facility.

Captain Blackwood maintained a strict policy regarding downtime for soldiers. Every moment from breakfast completion until dinner preparation required either physical conditioning or base maintenance duties. Rest periods were essentially nonexistent under his command.

The familiar structure reminded me of my previous military experiences. This felt like an extended boot camp scenario, which struck me as unnecessarily harsh. Not that my personal opinions carried any weight in this situation. My assignment here was involuntary, and Captain Blackwood held absolute authority over facility operations. His directives were final.

Their cover story seemed comprehensive and well-planned to explain my unusual presence here.
