My Fated Alpha's Cruel Game

Elena’s POV

I couldn’t pinpoint the exact moment sleep had claimed me, but I hadn’t been alone when it happened.

The early morning light filtered through the curtains when my eyes fluttered open, and the realization hit me that Marcus and I were still tangled together in my mother’s bed.

She definitely wasn’t going to expect this scene when she returned from her night shift.

I carefully extracted myself from Marcus’s embrace and pulled on some clothes from the dresser, then padded quietly to the living room.

Mom was stretched out on the couch, just beginning to stir as her internal clock kicked in. She had another shift waiting for her.

"I’m sorry about last night," I said softly.

"There’s nothing for you to apologize for. I’ve been telling you to take the bedroom since we moved into this place. You’re the one who kept refusing." Her voice held no trace of irritation.

"Well, I’m not going to commandeer your room now either. I’ll get all the bedding washed today," I promised.

"Shouldn’t you be getting ready for work?" she asked, sitting up and stretching.

"Not today. Doctor’s orders to stay home until my back heals properly. The wounds started bleeding again yesterday, so he made it clear I need to take things slow. And I’m definitely not supposed to remove the stitches prematurely." I explained the situation.

"Understood. So, about yesterday with the Alpha," she said, her tone carefully neutral.

"That definitely wasn’t something I planned," I said quickly.

"These things never are. Especially when it involves your mate," she replied with a knowing look.

"Are you really okay with this whole situation?" I asked, needing to know where she stood.

"He’s your mate. I’ll figure out how to be okay with it. Don’t spend your energy worrying about me," she said firmly.

She headed to the bathroom while I started the coffee, and that’s when Marcus emerged from the bedroom wearing his jeans but no shirt.

"I thought you were in the shower," he said, running a hand through his disheveled hair.

"Not yet. I’ll shower after she leaves for work," I replied.

"Got it. I need to head back to the packhouse," he said.

"Okay. Will I see you later today?" I asked, barely meeting his eyes.

The uncertainty was eating at me. Throughout this entire time since discovering we were mates, I’d never been sure where I stood with him. But maybe we were finally going to figure that out.

"Absolutely. I’ll catch up with you later," he said, leaning down to press a kiss to my lips.

He pulled his shirt on before stepping out of the trailer, and I watched through the window as he walked toward the packhouse.

Once mom left for work, I kept my word. I stripped all the bedding from her room and gathered anything else we might have touched, throwing it all in the wash. I strung up makeshift clotheslines around the living room to hang everything up to dry.

When I stepped outside with my coffee, I lit a cigarette and noticed the wolves patrolling the area more frequently than before.

They were definitely maintaining heightened security since that vampire sighting. My gut told me it had been Julian. Unless he’d brought other family members with him.

I wandered around the trailer’s perimeter, smoking and thinking, when I spotted Jett’s wolf form resting beneath a nearby tree.

He lifted his head to look at me, and I could swear his expression looked like a smile. Though with wolves, it was hard to tell for certain.

After finishing my cigarette, I went back inside for a shower and changed into nicer clothes. I grabbed my purse and headed out, making my way into town.

My first stop was the bank to check my account balance.

The amount surprised me. Marcus was clearly paying me more than a typical omega’s salary. Though I knew he hadn’t been extending that same generosity to my mother.

I made rounds to several shops, settling outstanding bills, and watched my balance shrink considerably. Fortunately, our refrigerator was already well-stocked, so groceries weren’t a pressing concern.

As I began the walk back toward the trailer, a commotion from the packhouse direction caught my attention.

I followed the sound and discovered a large crowd had assembled outside the main building.

Positioning myself at the very back of the group, I watched as Marcus emerged from the packhouse with two guards flanking him. Between the guards, they were escorting Victor.

The crowd’s energy was tense, and I could feel the undercurrent of anger rippling through the gathered pack members. Victor looked defiant, his jaw set. Even from a distance, his expression seemed to hold what might have been contempt and resignation.

Marcus’s presence commanded immediate attention, and the murmuring died down as he stepped forward. His Alpha authority was palpable even from where I stood at the back of the crowd.

I strained to hear what was happening, but the distance made it difficult to catch every word. The situation looked serious, and based on the guards’ positioning and Victor’s obvious restraint, this wasn’t a casual conversation.

The pack members around me were whispering among themselves, but I couldn’t make out the specifics of what had led to this confrontation. Whatever Victor had done, it was significant enough to warrant this very public display.

Marcus’s expression was stern, his Alpha demeanor fully engaged as he addressed both Victor and the assembled crowd. The weight of leadership was evident in his posture and the way he commanded the space around him.

I remained at the back, uncertain whether I should stay and witness whatever was unfolding or retreat to the trailer. The crowd seemed invested in the outcome, and the tension suggested this was far from over.
