After stumbling around the plains for another minute, I find the whistler. At least, I think this is it? There’s something black and glossy like obsidian partially pinned under a rock. My finger pokes the thing on its own, I can’t be held responsible. The dark matter is fleshy and warm.

“It was an accident! Hold on,” I say as I brace myself against the rock. I push with my legs and back, using leverage to tilt the small boulder away from the monster. “Can you get free?”

The little thing wriggles, tugs, and springs free from its prison.

It flies through levitation, zipping around in celebration. It’s about eighteen inches long and several inches wide. However, when it stops to inspect me, that length compresses into a sphere before expanding into several abstract-shaped arms.

“What’s your name?” I ask, unable to identify the strange monster.

*Whistle…*

“Hmm.” Its new shape looks sort of like a symbol. It almost reminds me of a question mark. “I’ll call you, ‘Ero-teme.’”

The creature flows forward to nuzzle its warm flesh against my cheek excitedly.

“I’m looking for monsters to bring back to my village.”

Ero-teme transforms into a black facemask with a nose hole and falls into my hands. I turn the object in my hands without seeing any distinguishing markings on either side. Shrugging, I don the mask. If my Tamer training taught me anything, it’s to embrace new experiences.

The mask comes alive, wrapping itself around my head as Ero-teme forces my lips open with a protrusion. The pain and cramping finally subside. I relax, as it seems I’m not dying from poison, but became the subject of some weird magic.

“Maybe I am pregnant?” I can’t rule it out entirely; Ero-teme’s semen definitely did something to me. As long as a monster doesn’t burst out of my chest in a gory spectacle, I’m sure it’s fine…

“It sort of looks like a clock…” Maybe it’s a timer? Whatever is going on, I should return to town. Someone has to know what this is. Even if not, I should wait a month to see if the tattoo clock is counting down to something.

I’m a little disappointed at having to go back to the village without finding any monster girls, but at least I’m not returning empty-handed. I have this tattoo as proof! If I am pregnant, there’s always next time in nine months. It’s not like I’m getting married and settling down.

Town Nurseries are very understanding of women who want to pursue a carrier instead of raising their children. The Human Plains are so underpopulated in terms of both humans and human-friendly monsters there’s a cash reward for giving birth!

As I scan the sky to orient myself for a return journey to town, I see the bird again. It’s too distant and backlit to determine what it is exactly. I put my hands on my hips and shout at it, “Hey! You scared me last time! Cut it out!”

The bird flies away, and I mime dusting my hands to show I’ve resolved the situation. I’m glad I got that out of my system because shouting in the Wilds is a surefire way to reveal one’s presence. The stress got to me, okay?

I hear a growl to my left.
