210. Day 7 Golden Hour

Chapter 243

I’m sitting on our futon, clutching the unsealed envelope that Olindia brought back from the Library’s secret chamber while appraising the contents by dawn’s early light.


It may have been a mistake to read Saint Lilith’s letter right before going to war. At least I didn’t do this last night! I wouldn’t have slept a wink. There’s so much here for me to digest. The real Demon Queen… other Echidnas… the God Brands… the ‘final war’ that ends the world. Sheesh.


Is Typhon really the monster I met, the one who did this to me? He didn’t seem like the world-destroying type. I certainly didn’t sense any malice in his actions. And yet, shouldn’t I assume Lilith knows what she’s talking about? She saw these tattoos as a curse, but to me, they’ve been a gift.


Her situation reminds me of Spindle, a little, but who knows if the Demon Queen is too far gone at this point to hold a conversation? What am I saying—I’ve never met her, maybe she’s doing a great job upholding her duty to dam the tide of corruption. Speculating is useless when there’s nothing to be done with the information.


The fact of the matter is that I have a war for control of the Region on my hands, and I intend to come out on top! Well, first things first, I’ll get out of bed and do my golden hour shenanigans—assigning my currently available marks before dawn allows me to refund my selections as the sun rises, allowing me the freedom to rearrange my loadout. Just another odd quirk of my Mark system.


Then I’ll see how my companions are doing before we decide our battle strategy.

Creates a body cavity in the user where all genitals are stored. 'Male'-type genitals will evert with arousal.


Lamia Paralytic Venom


Requires a fang-type body modification. Allows the user to produce and select a fairly potent venom designed to limit their targets mobility. This effect does not suffocate the victim, as Lamias prefer fresh prey and will store what they can’t eat for later.


Lamia Venom Spray


Requires a fang-type body modification. Allows the user to project their venom in a medium-range cone of aerosolized mist.


Melusine Burning Venom


Requires a fang-type body modification. Requires Inner Furnace. Requires a venom-type base ability. Allows the user to direct their internal heat source into their venom sacs, heating the liquid to a supercritical point that vaporizes instantly when sprayed in a medium-range cone. Can instead be heated to boiling temperatures and spat in globules for additional range.


I really want the Inner Furnace / Heat Resistance combo. Spraying Burning Venom or Paralytic Venom at my enemies sounds cool, but it’d take a significant Mark investment to make happen. I'll keep my eye on the Genital Slit option as a potential luxury investment—being lewd is fun, but I miss being able to fit my junk in a slim pair of panties. Continuing to the next relevant choice, I prefer to keep my insectoid wings rather than convert my flight method. With all that in mind, I make my decision.

Normally, I’d save back the last Mark point for flexibility, but given we’re on the verge of war, I put it somewhere useful.

After making my choices, a powerful warmth blossoms within my chest. It’s a ball of energy beneath my skin that I can intuitively move throughout my body. Concentrating, I transfer the power of my Inner Furnace to my upper-right palm and fingers until they reach the point of incandescence. “This hand of mine is burning red…”


Suddenly, I really want retractable Cat-kin claws to merge with Lizardman Claws using Slime Amalgamation. That’d be sick.


Smiling at the success, I move on to looking at a few of my old Mark Trees to make sure I didn’t miss any hidden gems.

I consider trading Photosynthesis for Bark Skin, and I’m on the fence about it until I realize I do intend to wear my old Cancer Armor into battle. The crab suit will cover up any aesthetic choices I'm not wild about anyway. While I appreciate the green aesthetic, now is the time for min/maxing if ever.

Slime Amalgamation allows me to integrate the Third Tier Bark Skin ability with Lizardman Scales and Stone Skin, each mitigating the negative attributes or limitations of the others. Scales keep me from losing my flexibility and sensitivity. Bark and Stone merge organic and inorganic defenses that make my body denser and tougher. Stone covers Bark’s weakness to fire. Bark offsets Stone’s brittleness, plugging the ‘hole’ in my defenses against being shattered. My coloration goes from green to cinnamon brown to burnt mahogany as the changes settle.


It’s a dark brown that’s almost black. Almost. Oh, well.


Testing my arm with a Summoned Venom Dart, I find I’m now totally impervious to un-buffed Second Tier piercing damage. I assume the same is true for slashing damage. Given my Greater Slime Constitution protecting me from bludgeoning, I’m well-defended against the basic damage types.


In the end, I decide it’s best to refund one of my Second Tier abilities for a specialized monster spell.

All it takes is for me to form my hostile intent, and each tentacle weapon starts swinging with precision in a hail of blades in a several meter radius around me. While I’m sure Gabby is working on implementing her Witchcraft and Tutelage abilities to great effect, those options require an amount of time-investment that I simply don’t have.

For the record, if I dig into the menu options for the other Third Tier mark trees, there are ‘Longevity’ abilities for all the Third Tier monsters I’ve gotten marks from (except Slimes, which appear to be ageless creatures). It’s not a Matron/Patron exclusive; my other Mark Trees seem to have been automatically hiding the option since it was redundant with what I already had access to.


That’s neither here nor there, though.


The more relevant topic is the ‘Lightweight’ series of abilities. Basically, reducing one’s weight allows for better acceleration and agility while sacrificing their momentum at a given velocity. Basically, a punch thrown at a given speed hits less for a Lightweight compared to a heavyweight.


And I want my hits to land hard.

Hmm, the rules for Ramming Speed feels a bit restrictive. I think I'll pass this time.


After reviewing my other options, I decide to prioritize Healing Milk and Concussion Resistance. The former will finally grant me a near-inexhaustible source of healing magic, and the latter will help me maintain consciousness in the face of head injuries. I have my Swarm Cores to take over if my brain is damaged, but getting clocked in the head will still send me reeling without this additional protection.

My chest immediately expands to almost preposterous proportions. Holy God Beast! My boobs are ginormous! At this point, I already have multiple sources of breast expansion from Maternal Breeder abilities that are being amplified by this enhancement. Combined with my Orc Stature, I’m lugging around two large watermelons!

I turn in place, slinging them about, and discover they’re throwing off my balance. Damn, I never thought I’d say this, but they’re too big. For battle, that is. I could go even bigger for a session of fun-time, but there is such a thing as impractical breast size for a fighter. It’s not a thing in Home Town currently, but some ancient humans needed to get reduction surgery because of chronic back and shoulder pain.


While that’s not an issue for me with my physical enhancements, these oversized knockers will impact my agility in combat.

After seeing Tink obsess over the ‘Demon Queen,’ and knowing what I know about her now, the last thing I want is to get distracted by a misleading Prophetic Vision. There are several interesting options here, but I’m going for straight upgrades.

My Green Slime Hair begins to sparkle and leave trails of glitter in the air as the nest of tentacles weave about according to my subconscious whims. Fairy Dandruff supposedly is the Fae-class flight enhancer in addition to some other effects. It should give me a moderate boost to my air speed, though I’m not yet clear on the specifics.


I go ahead and refund my Power Bond with Cottontail, which I discovered had given me a double-selection of Luck Magic—from what I can tell, it seems the redundancy didn’t actually enhance the ability. I… may have forgotten to check what my bond with her had given me until now. Oops. At least I’m honest with myself.


Switching my Power Bond to Megan yields Denki Nezumi Electric Absorption, saving me a Mark I can spend elsewhere. (The real advantage there is allowing Megan to select the Electric Ewe Electric Magic ability for the battle today.)

Whelp. I just copied Megan’s entire kit. That said, I still didn’t get everything I wanted from this Mark Tree, and it took a ton of marks when I could’ve just merged with her using Symbiont Amalgamation. The advantage of this method is that we now have two electric balls of doom zooming around the battlefield. Also, I prioritized grabbing D.N. Agility over one of Cottontail’s abilities, mostly because I assume it’s integral to being able to control Megan’s speed.


I make sure to grab Moka’s Dust Bunny Earth Magic with the Mark point I saved with Megan’s Power Bond. I could grab Chris’s magic type but, in the end, I think a wardrobe upgrade is long overdue and I don’t want anything the Fleecy Sheeple make for me to get damaged in battle.
