I break away, and run for the door, shouting, “Love you! See you later!” before they see the tears in my eyes.

Outside, I take a deep breath and wipe my face. I start forward with a heavy sigh and a smile. Reaching into a pocket, I withdraw my Tamer license.

It’s kind of a relic of the past. It used to mean a lot more before Eastin fell, and the Association spanned more than a single town. In those days, it could identify my status going between human settlements. They even had Tamer grades from ‘F’ to ‘S’ with commensurate salaries and hotel suites.

Sure wish I’d been born in that era. Well, considering this town is probably the last human-run village, being a Tamer in those times didn’t end well.

I look around the modest town one last time before I leave.

Wargs and Doggins patrol the streets and guard the walls. Okay, it’s more of a fence with a platform for archers. Doggins are single-headed with mostly human features. They can grow to adulthood before evolving, so it’s not uncommon to see them in officer uniform or walking alongside their husband or wife.

Minotaurs and Rams are both evolutions of a common root, Bovines. I don’t know what catalyst separates Taurines from Lambies, but they seem to get along. They typically do the manual labor on the farms growing crops. Together, these subspecies are the backbone of society for the essential goods they produce.

Henlin eggs are extremely nutritious; one of the villages’ staple foods. There are several hen houses throughout the town where they go to lay, sitting and chatting together while they brood. Eggs laid at home are off-limits, of course, as they could hatch into children. Henlins have to rigorously document their cycles and sexual encounters to ensure no mistakes are made.

Ewes, Taurines, and Henlins are well respected. Human males throw themselves at these monsters to be selected as the matron’s sugar babies.

Goblins and Orcs are on the low end of social status in peace times. They’re essential during Incursions, however. Then they become the most bred species due to their high evolutionary potential.

As the most sexually desired species, humans have a mixed reputation within their own town. Each species gets a tailored education to learn what’s expected of them. For humans, it’s either Breed or Tame, and Taming fell out of favor long ago.

We used to run the world as great builders and shapers. Now we’re reduced to our sexual abilities.

The buildings I pass were once storefronts and ‘malls’ where humans exchanged goods and services. The rubble paths were once unbroken roads where self-propelled carts called ‘cars’ drove between towns. They had incredible ancient technology like the Association’s ‘projector,’ ‘record players’ that produced music, and even flying machines.

I’ve often dreamed of flying.

Unfortunately, it’s not something a human will ever do again except in the claws of a predator.

“Alex! Wait up!”

I stop and turn upon hearing a familiar voice.

Julia and Jenny run towards me and stop a few feet away. They both have brown hair and green eyes with cute oval faces. Honestly, I’m a little surprised anyone came to see me off. Jennifer (Jenny) Chartreuse hands me another glass vial, then steps back to kick a pebble with her shoe. “Stay safe, Alex.”
