Inside the car, Amelia nestled into the plush leather seat, her hand resting on Kai’s thigh. His fingers absentmindedly played with hers, tracing the lines of her palm like he was memorizing her all over again.
She glanced at him. He looked relaxed, his gaze out the tinted window as if lost in thought. A small smile tugged at her lips as a memory surfaced, then she chuckled quietly.
Kai turned to her, one brow raised. "What’s so funny?"
She leaned her head back, eyes glimmering with amusement. "I was just remembering the first time I sat in this car. You’d just picked me up off the street. I was standing outside because the hotel had kicked me out with my suitcase in the rain. And you... you were so cold that night."
Kai’s lips curled into a faint smile, eyes dropping to their intertwined hands. "Well," he said softly, "I’m glad I picked you up that night."
From the front, the driver listened silently, his lips twitching upward in amusement.
Picked her up? he thought with a scoff. If I hadn’t informed you, we would’ve driven right past her, young master. I should be the one getting the thank-you.
As the car stopped, the driver stepped out and walked briskly to the back and opened the door.
Kai stepped out first, straightened his jacket, then turned and offered his hand to Amelia. She placed her hand in his and allowed him to help her out,
and then she froze.
Before them stood a private jet.
Amelia blinked in surprise. "You own a private jet?"
Kai gave her a teasing glance. "Yes, I do. Did you really expect us to use a commercial airplane?"
She elbowed him lightly but didn’t reply.
He led her up the stairs, his hand never letting go of hers. Inside, the jet was luxurious, chilled wine already waiting in crystal glasses. They settled into the creamy leather seats, and Amelia’s eyes flicked toward the wine, then to Kai, her eyes filled with questions she wished to ask. He noticed.
Kai reached out and took her hand again, lifting it to his lips and brushing a kiss across her knuckles.
"My butterfly," he said, his eyes looking intently at her, "I think it’s time I told you who I truly am."

Song An was the first child and only daughter of Song Yue. She was his beloved child, and even though it was unusual for a female to be the heir, Song Yue made sure that this beloved daughter of his was the heir. Unfortunately, Song An didn’t want it. She despised the crimes her father committed and didn’t want to have anything to do with the dirty dealings of the underworld. Worst of all, she had been engaged to the son of another gang in order to strengthen both families, so she did what she thought was best. She ran away. She took all the money she could while at it and settled in Country A. She decided to go to college too and live an ordinary life while at it. That’s when she met Dan Blackwood.
He was a senior at the college, a playboy as one may say, had various flings here and there. It was the usual bad boy–good girl love story. They met one day at a college party and they hit it off. Somehow, Dan seemed to let go of his playboy attitude, and even after Dan graduated college, their relationship continued and Dan even promised to marry her once he gained the reins of the Blackwood power. And it wasn’t long before she got pregnant with Kai. She had gone to the doctor, confirmed everything, and seeing the result, she was though nervous, was happy.
When Dan came to visit her as usual, she told him that she was pregnant. Instead of the joy and excitement she had expected, all she got was a dull, "Really?" and ever since that day, she never saw Dan again. She tried calling his line several times and it wasn’t long before she was blocked. The last time she saw Dan was in the news where his marriage with Hera was announced. It was then she broke down, and her mental state deteriorated.
She was in her final year then, but due to her poor mental state, she could no longer continue and the money she’d taken was dwindling. Her pride kept her from returning to her father. Her pregnancy advanced. And though she loved her unborn son, she also resented him. Her emotions were a storm she couldn’t contain.
Kai was born into that storm.
His childhood was a blur of love and violence. There were moments when his mother would kiss him with trembling affection, calling him her little sunshine. But there were also nights when her eyes would glaze over and she would claw at him, slap him, scream at him, blaming him for ruining her life.
Still, she was all he had.
So Kai endured. Endured the pain, the confusion, the wounds. Because sometimes, just sometimes, she looked at him with love, and that was enough. As long as she still showed him that loving gaze, then it was fine. It was alright. When he grew up, he would take care of his mother and make sure she did not hurt again.
That was how it was supposed to be. But fate wasn’t so kind to him. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
When he was five, he could vividly remember that day. He had just gotten back from school when he saw his mother screaming as two men pinned her down, and a woman dressed in luxury stood looking at his mother in disdain. When he entered, the woman had turned to look at him and then sneered in contempt.
"So this is him, huh? The bastard."
His mother had shouted at him to run, but it wasn’t long before he was caught, besides, he was only five, and before his very eyes, Hera ordered that his mother be shot to death. He could still very much remember the warmth of her blood on his skin.
After that day, he was taken to the Blackwood household where he became a donor child.
