Amelia studied Kai with a scrutinizing gaze.
What did he mean by that?
They had both silently agreed to ignore their engagement until the day it was officially broken. Yet now, he was suddenly using it as an excuse?
Kai, as if sensing her thoughts, added smoothly, "Don’t overthink it."
Amelia hesitated for a moment before shrugging. "Alright. I’ll be bothering you for the night then."
She didn’t mind crashing at his place—especially since he didn’t seem to have any ill intent.
The car pulled into an upscale estate, passing grand mansions lined with perfectly trimmed gardens. However, when the vehicle finally stopped, Amelia blinked in surprise.
Compared to the luxurious estates surrounding it, the small duplex in front of her looked... out of place. Almost like an eyesore among the blatant luxury of the neighborhood.
Amelia felt a pang of pity for Kai.
After being used all his life, when he was no longer useful, he was thrown away by those he ought to call family. And that’s why, even though he had the blood of one of the wealthiest families in Country A, all he could afford was this small duplex.
She glanced at him again, and for a fleeting moment, her gaze softened.
Kai, who had been stepping out of the car, caught her expression and frowned.
Was that... pity?
He sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. He wasn’t even going to bother addressing it.
"Come in," he said flatly, unlocking the door and stepping inside.
Amelia was greeted with a surprisingly warm and cozy home, which smelled faintly of cinnamon. The house was empty, which meant that he probably lived alone.
"Come, let me show you to the guest room."
Kai led her upstairs and pushed open a door.
"This is the guest room," he said.
The room was spacious, with a queen-sized bed and neatly arranged furniture.
"You can take a shower and come downstairs for dinner if you’d like," he added.
Amelia shot him a grateful smile.
"Alright, thank you."
This fiancé of hers wasn’t so bad after all.
After she had taken her bath, she dried herself and fell on the bed to rest a bit before going down for dinner.
The bed was comfy, which made Amelia’s body relax.
Good stuff, she muttered.
At least it was way better than the hotel bed.
Speaking about hotels... While she had thankfully gotten a place to stay for the night, what about the next day and the day after that? Mason obviously had something to do with the fact that all hotels were booked, and she was sure he must have gotten to the realtors as well.
Did that mean she had to leave the city completely or meet Grandfather Cosgrove for help?
If she asked Grandfather Cosgrove, he would no doubt ask her to stay with him, and Amelia knew that she couldn’t keep her fake smile up all day.
And leaving the city... Well, it seemed that she would think about it tomorrow. As of now, she was really exhausted.
Before Amelia realized it, she had drifted off to sleep.
.....
Amelia’s eyes fluttered open.
It was morning, as she had been woken up by the sunlight glittering through the window.
She groggily sat up, rubbing her eyes.
Her stomach grumbled, reminding her that she had slept off, causing her to skip dinner.
She should go apologize and thank Kai.
Amelia quickly freshened up and headed downstairs. But by the time she got down, instead of finding Kai, there was only a note on the dining table.
"There’s food in the fridge. Heat it if you’re hungry."
It seemed that she truly was indebted to him now.
After another day of fruitless house hunting, Amelia felt extremely exhausted.
As she had suspected, Mason had gotten to the realtors. Every time she met one, the moment they heard her name, or even when she lied about who she was, once she was recognized, they would immediately inform her that the apartment was no longer available for rent.
So she had begun looking outside the City but she was yet to find an appropriate one
Amelia couldn’t wait to get back to the house, as she was already beginning to imagine herself lying down on the warm, soft bed.
Then she spotted a supermarket, causing an idea to suddenly pop into her head.
Why don’t I cook something for him as a thank you gift?
Thinking it was a good idea, she stepped inside and grabbed whatever ingredients looked remotely useful. After she was done, she felt quite proud of herself for having such good eyes.
After she got back, she poured out all the ingredients, ready to start cooking. Only then did she realize a minor problem.
She had never cooked before. Not in this life, not in her previous one.
Still, with the power of technology, she was confident she could figure it out with some tutorial videos.
It won’t be that bad, would it?
She was wrong.
It was that bad.
In the frying pan was something resembling black moss, and the pot contained what could only be described as vegetable flavored water, it was ninety nine percent water and one percent veggies.
Amelia stared at her disastrous attempt at cooking, horrified.
This is harder than I thought...
But she could swear that she had followed every step, so how did it end in disaster?
It was so different from what the video said it would look like.
Before she could clean up the mess, the front door clicked open.
Kai stepped in with a cold expression.
He had forgotten he had a guest, or rather, he had assumed she had left.
That was until he saw Amelia standing in the kitchen, looking incredibly guilty and embarrassed, an apron tied around her waist, and the unmistakable scent of burnt food filling the air.
His gaze swept over the scene, taking in the scorched pan, the ruined ingredients and Amelia’s embarrassed expression.
"The hell...?"
