The eastern gate of Jianghe City was not just a doorway.

It was a dividing line between two completely different worlds.

Inside the walls, life followed a predictable rhythm. Streets were patrolled, buildings were maintained, and ordinary people lived their lives under the protection of the city’s defenses.

Outside the walls, there was only uncertainty.

The massive steel gate slowly lifted with a heavy mechanical rumble, revealing a long stretch of road that extended toward the distant forest. Tall watchtowers stood along the outer perimeter, each one manned by armed guards equipped with rifles and heavy crossbows designed specifically to deal with monsters.

The morning sky was still dim, but a pale orange glow had begun to appear on the horizon.

The expedition teams gathered near the gate.

There were around forty newly awakened individuals in total, divided into several small groups. Each team would be led by an experienced hunter responsible for keeping them alive during the day’s training mission.

Lin Yi stood beside Wang Hao near the back of the crowd.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The sight of the open gate stirred something strange in their hearts.

Excitement.

Nervousness.

And a quiet sense that once they stepped beyond those walls, things would never feel quite the same again.

Wang Hao exhaled slowly.

"So this is it."

Lin Yi nodded.

"This is it."

Nearby, a tall man wearing dark leather armor stepped forward. A long scar ran across his left cheek, giving him a slightly intimidating appearance.

He looked over the gathered students with the expression of someone who had seen far too many beginners make stupid mistakes.

"My name is Zhang Wei," he said in a deep voice. "I’m the hunter assigned to guide this group today."

His gaze swept across the crowd.

"Listen carefully. What you’re about to experience outside the walls is not a school exercise. Monsters don’t care about your class rank or your potential."

A few students shifted uncomfortably.

Zhang Wei continued.

"Your job today is simple. Follow instructions. Stay with your team. Do not chase monsters by yourselves."

He paused briefly before adding,

"And if I say run... you run."

No one laughed.

Even the most confident students understood the seriousness of his tone.

Zhang Wei glanced toward the gate where several guards had finished checking the perimeter.

"Alright," he said. "Move out."

The teams began walking through the gate one by one.

Lin Yi felt a faint chill in the air as he stepped beyond the walls of Jianghe City for the first time.

The landscape outside the city looked very different from what he had imagined.

The paved road continued for several hundred meters before fading into a dirt trail that led toward a dense forest. Patches of ruined buildings could be seen scattered across the plains, remnants of structures abandoned long ago after the Cataclysm.

Nature had slowly reclaimed most of the land.

Tall grass swayed in the morning breeze, and distant hills formed dark silhouettes against the rising sun.

But despite the peaceful scenery, the atmosphere carried an undeniable tension.

Everyone knew that monsters lived out here.

Wang Hao walked beside Lin Yi while scanning the surroundings nervously.

"It feels... different," he murmured.

Lin Yi understood what he meant.

The wilderness felt heavier somehow.

As if the air itself carried a warning.

The group continued walking for nearly twenty minutes before Zhang Wei raised his hand.

"Stop here."

The students gathered around him.

"We’ve entered the outer edge of Sector Twelve," he explained. "This area is mostly inhabited by low level creatures."

He pointed toward the forest.

"The most common monsters here are Grey Fang Wolves and Ironhide Boars. Both are around level two or three."

Several students immediately tensed.

For newly awakened hunters, even monsters at those levels could be dangerous.

Zhang Wei crossed his arms.

"Your first task is simple. Hunt one monster as a team."

He looked directly at them.

"If you can’t even handle that... you shouldn’t be outside the city."

Wang Hao swallowed.

Lin Yi simply nodded.

Just as Zhang Wei finished speaking, a faint rustling sound came from the nearby grass.

Everyone turned toward it.

A pair of glowing yellow eyes appeared between the bushes.

Then another.

And another.

Three lean creatures slowly emerged from the tall grass.

They looked like wolves, but their bodies were larger and their teeth far sharper than any ordinary animal.

Their grey fur rippled as they moved.

Zhang Wei glanced at them calmly.

"Perfect timing."

Several students stepped back instinctively.

"Three Grey Fang Wolves," Zhang Wei said. "Level two."

The students exchanged nervous glances.

No one moved.

Finally, Wang Hao raised his hand halfway before quickly lowering it again.

Lin Yi noticed the hesitation spreading through the crowd.

Even though these monsters were considered weak, this was the first real battle for most of them.

The wolves watched the group carefully, their low growls rumbling in the quiet morning air.

Zhang Wei frowned slightly.

"What’s wrong?" he said. "You were all brave enough to sign up for the expedition."

Just as the silence began to stretch awkwardly, someone stepped forward.

Su Qinghan.

Her expression remained calm as always.

"I’ll go."

Zhang Wei nodded.

"Good. Who’s assisting?"

Two other students quickly volunteered, one with a shield class and another with a fire mage class.

The small team moved forward cautiously.

Lin Yi watched quietly, as Su Qinghan drew her sword.

The blade shimmered with faint icy energy.

The first wolf lunged.

In the next instant, her sword flashed.

A streak of pale frost cut through the air.

The wolf was forced back with a sharp yelp.

The shield user stepped forward to block the second wolf while the fire mage launched a small burst of flame.

Within seconds the battlefield erupted into chaotic movement.

But Su Qinghan moved with surprising precision.

Her blade struck again, this time slashing across the wolf’s shoulder.

The frost energy spread instantly across the wound.

Moments later the creature collapsed.

The remaining wolves quickly retreated into the forest.

Silence returned.

Zhang Wei nodded approvingly.

"Good coordination."

Su Qinghan wiped the blade clean and sheathed it.

Meanwhile, a faint notification suddenly appeared inside Lin Yi’s mind.

Ding.

He blinked.

The system panel appeared.

Lin Yi raised an eyebrow.

Even watching the fight from a distance had granted him experience. But, he was in a party afterall, and when one was in a party, experience gained are shared.

Before he could process the number, the system activated again.

Lin Yi’s eyes widened slightly.

This was truly minimum effort, maximum reward!

And without even lifting a finger, he had gained 500 experience points.

The experience bar on his system panel instantly surged upward.

Wang Hao suddenly turned toward him.

"Brother Lin?"

Lin Yi looked at him.

"What?"

"You’re smiling like someone who just found a treasure chest."

Lin Yi chuckled softly.

"Just enjoying the fresh air."

But deep inside, he had already realized something important.

If simply standing near a battle could grant experience...

Then leveling up might be far easier than anyone expected.

And this hunt had only just begun.
