Chapter 41: 3RD POV.
Jacob sat up straight, his movements so sudden and sharp that they actually caught Persephone off guard.
The frustration that had been building up inside him since he first woke up on that wooden boat finally boiled over.
"You know what, yes! I am blaming you," he said, his voice echoing off the damp cave walls.
He wasn’t whispering anymore nor was he begging.
Jacob looked her right in the eyes, refusing to be the one to look away first.
"Why would anyone serve such an uptight and ruthless woman like you?!" he continued, the words pouring out in a rush.
"You treat people like they are objects you can just throw away when you get bored. You hit me, you threaten me, and you expect me to just say ’thank you’ for the privilege of being your slave?"
Persephone stared at him, her mouth slightly open in shock, clearly she hadn’t expected this.
She was used to him being the quiet, obedient "pet" who did what he was told because he was too scared to do anything else. But the man sitting in front of her now wasn’t that person.
"At least when I was living with your sister," Jacob added, his tone growing even sharper, "she didn’t make me wish I was better off dead."
" Unlike you, She actually treats people like they have a soul, which is more than I can say for you."
" Maybe learn more from her, than hating her!"
"H-How did you know?" Persephone mumbled. Her face went pale, and her posture slumped slightly.
The anger that had been radiating from her just a moment ago seemed to flicker and die out, replaced by a deep sense of shock.
She hadn’t expected him to know the secret between her sister and her.
She hadn’t expected someone from the village to reveal this to him.
"Does it even matter that I know you’re both related?" Jacob asked, frowning at her.
He didn’t feel sorry for her. He was too tired for pity. "Ever since you kidnapped me, it’s been one headache after another. I didn’t ask to be here. I didn’t ask to be turned into... whatever this is." He gestured to his body.
"We haven’t even been together for over a month, and yet you’ve almost killed me on several occasions!" he yelled, his voice rising with every sentence. "Just what do you want from me?! Is it to see me finally break under your weight?! Do you love seeing me suffer this much because of you–!"
*Slap!*
The sound of the crisp slap echoed through the cave. Jacob’s head was snapped to the side, his cheek stinging with a fresh, burning heat.
He froze, the rest of his sentence dying in his throat. He slowly turned his head back to look at her, but the words he was going to say vanished when he saw her face.
"Shut up!" Persephone screamed. Unlike her usual self, she had a rare look of hurt on her face.
Her chest was heaving as she struggled to catch her breath. "Who said I wanted to see you suffer? I only wanted you to stay here, yet you’re the one who went running after her!"
She pointed a trembling finger in the general direction of the village, her voice cracking with emotion.
"You’re the one who was going to die before I saved you! Do you have any idea what you looked like on that boat? You were skin and bones! If I hadn’t saved you, you would’ve starved to death out there in the middle of nowhere."
Jacob opened his mouth to argue, but she didn’t let him. She leaned closer, her shadow falling over him.
"I even fed you some fish from time to time, yet not once did you remember that!"
" You only remember what she’s done for you, not even one thing I did!"
Persephone gnashed her teeth in anger, her whole body trembling. Her eyes, which usually looked like cold pieces of obsidian, were beginning to moisten.
Tears threatened to fall, hanging on the edge of her lashes. "All you care about is that blue-haired witch! You act like I’m the one who hurt you, but I’m the only reason you’re even alive to complain about it!"
’Huh? Wait, how did she know.’
This time it was Jacob’s turn to be stunned. The anger in his chest suddenly felt like it had been hit with a bucket of ice water.
He stared at her, his mind racing through the memories of his first few days in this world.
He remembered the despair of realizing he was going to die of thirst and hunger before he ever saw land.
But he also remembered the fish.
Every now and then, a few fresh fish would just... land in his boat. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶
Sometimes they would jump in, or a wave would wash them over the side.
At the time, he had just thought he was incredibly lucky. He had thanked whatever gods were listening for the "accident" that kept him alive long enough to keep moving.
Judging from her words, did it mean that she was secretly watching over him all those days since his transmigration? Was she following the boat the whole time?
If not, how would she know about him starving for days?
Normally, he wouldn’t have been able to survive that long with enough energy to move about, let alone survive the transformation process later on.
It was because of those fish that he’d been able to last. And now, she was saying she was actually the one who was helping him in secret.
She hadn’t been waiting for him to die; she had been keeping him alive.
’That...’ Jacob didn’t know what to say.
