These Dangerous Girls Placed Me Into Jeopardy

There are way too many boring people in this world.

So many, I sometimes feel like killing them all...

That guy, this girl — they’re all pathetically shallow creatures.

Why are people like that still allowed to live on this earth without shame? Honestly, they’d be more useful dead. At least then they wouldn’t cause trouble for others or be a burden on this world, right?

Besides... the dead are so much better than the living, hehe...

But even so, there are always a few who don’t know their place and come crawling to me.

Just a few steps through the school gate after getting out of the car, a passably good-looking guy started tailing me. I already knew what he was about to do — I’ve gone through this same routine more times than I can count.

“Lillian Ji! I, uh — I really like you! Please go out with me!”

Like this guy. I don’t even know his name, and he dares to confess to me. We’ve never even talked, never had any contact, and he thinks he can just show up and declare his love? Just because my face happens to be his type? He’s no different than a beast driven by instinct, chasing after a pretty female.

It’s not like I’m personally offended by people who fall for appearances. It’s just that I don’t believe looks are even a core component of love — at best, they’re an optional detail for mere liking.

“Sorry... you’re just not my type.”

After I politely gave that response, he lowered his head like a man whose soul had just died.

Scenes like this play out every single week.

How boring... But still, he had a decent-looking “shell.” If he died, I could probably use him as a foot mat or something. But he’s still not quite worthy to be part of my collection.

Only people with a special scent are qualified to be in my collection.

I can smell it. The scent on people.

Not the ordinary kind of scent — it’s something much more specific.

I can’t describe it in perfect detail, but that scent tells me whether someone is different from the norm. In other words — if they’re abnormal, or in simpler terms... interesting.

People like that are incredibly rare. Everyone else — the common ones — don’t spark the faintest interest in me.

But last semester, that all changed.

I transferred into a very special class. And this class... was fascinating.

Every single person in the class had a distinct scent. Yes — this class had the abnormal abnormality of being entirely full of abnormals. Even our homeroom teacher, Ms. Jane, was no exception.

Only this one — Class 2-2 — is like that.

I still don’t know why such a bizarre situation occurred, but... hehehe... I couldn’t be happier with it.

The rest of my high school life is going to be my most treasured memory — I can feel it.

Thanks to half a semester of my own observation — and with a little help from my maids' background checks — I’ve pretty much figured out what makes most of them abnormal... though I haven’t taken any steps to get involved yet. Some of their abnormalities are even dangerous to me, so I need to choose carefully.

As I stepped into the classroom, a few students greeted me. I returned their greetings with the appropriate politeness. Another thing I liked about this class — most people didn’t obsess over me. They could interact with me normally. Unlike my old class, where just walking into the room would make everything go dead silent.

Maybe they don’t see me as anything special. Hehehe...

I sat down at my desk in the very back, far left seat. The girl next to me looked up and greeted me.

“Morning, Lillian.”

“Good morning, Lan Hua.”

The girl sitting next to me, Lan Hua, is one of the few people I haven’t yet figured out. I still haven’t determined what her abnormality is. But I can smell it on her. She definitely belongs in this class — she’s not normal.

She’s also one of the rare girls who’s willing to talk to me. Most other girls outright hate me — {N•o•v•e•l•i•g•h•t} maybe they’re jealous, or maybe... maybe they sense the abnormality in me too. Hehehe...

But Lan Hua doesn’t seem to mind me at all. Maybe it’s because she’s also high up on the looks scale, so she doesn’t feel inferior. Or maybe... she wants my seat.

I only figured it out recently, but it seems Lan Hua is very interested in the person who sits in front of me.

“What’s wrong? You keep looking at the classroom door. Waiting for someone?”

“Ah? N-No, not at all...”

She denied it out loud, but she kept sneaking glances toward the entrance. I was sure of it — the person she was waiting for was the one who sat directly in front of me.

His name is Ethan An. A totally unremarkable person.

He’s the only one in this entire class who gives off no scent.

Everyone else here has their own personality, quirks — some kind of abnormality.

But not Ethan An.

He’s just an ordinary person. Maybe a bit of a weirdo personality-wise, but nothing that reaches abnormal levels.

And unlike me, he’s been in this class of weirdos since the first year.

It’s seriously hard to believe — how has he survived a whole year without anything happening to him? Without noticing anything?

Is he insanely lucky... or just insanely dull?

His complete lack of uniqueness has somehow become his uniqueness. In this freak show of a class, he’s the one who stands out the most. A lone sheep who wandered into a pack of wolves. No wonder he ended up all alone.

Still, that’s about the extent of my interest in him.

I just don’t get what Lan Hua sees in someone like that. Maybe she just has bad taste?

That said, it was weird how Ethan An came in even later than me today. He usually lives on a rigid schedule — but today, he was almost late?

He didn’t show up until the bell was just about to ring.

“There he is, Lan Hua.”

“Huh? Ah—!”

Her face immediately lit up. That’s the expression of a girl in love — so easy to read.

“You’ve got it all wrong, Lillian! I wasn’t waiting for him or anything!”

“Hehe. Sure, sure~”

I watched the classroom door with interest, curious how Lan Hua’s expression would change as Ethan approached...

But instead of walking in casually, Ethan froze at the door, a dazed and panicked expression on his face, scanning the classroom like he’d just seen a ghost.

Even after Ms. Jane called to him multiple times from behind, he didn’t respond until she practically shouted at him. Then he finally walked in, tense and unnerved — like a lamb that finally realized it’s surrounded by wolves that could devour it at any moment.

What’s this?

Did he finally notice that the whole class is full of abnormals?

It took me an entire semester to uncover that. How did he find out in just one night? Or maybe... has something abnormal started happening to him?

As I puzzled over it, he walked toward his seat — and the moment he came within three or four meters of me...

I smelled it.

His scent had changed.

It was like he’d gone from a green apple to a red one. Or from a little lamb to a full-grown sheep.

In short: he had matured.

What happened? What could he have experienced yesterday that changed him this drastically in just one night?

A wet, uncomfortable sound brought my attention back to the front.

Ethan had reached his desk. Our eyes met.

I saw confusion. Shock. Bewilderment. And... fear.

That’s right — he was afraid of me.

Heh...

I smiled. Not a fake one — a real, natural smile that rose to my face on its own.

He froze for a few seconds when he saw it... then quickly sat down and scooted his chair forward, as if trying to put more distance between us.

And the fact that he only froze for a few seconds after seeing my genuine smile?

I take back what I said about Lan Hua having bad taste. If anything, she has amazing instincts, doesn’t she?
