The Adopted Cannon Fodder Made a Comeback

Zhou Mazi screamed incessantly.

Zhou Feng’er and Zhou Gu’er just watched without stepping forward.

Zhou Cai yelled and tried to rush over, but Zhou Duo’er grabbed him and held him back.

Zhou Feng’er didn’t move a muscle. A closer look would have revealed a trace of glee in her eyes. It showed that not only was she not the least bit sad or displeased to see Zhou Mazi getting beaten, but she actually approved of it. She was happy, even excited. She even imagined herself being the one doing the beating. She even hoped that Zhou Mazi would fall and never get up again. And if the beating caused Gu’er to get into trouble too, that would be even better.

Zhou Duo’er wasn’t as cunning as Zhou Feng’er. She was a little scared. After Zhou Gu’er had left, she had made excuses to go see Sun Jiaming several times, but he ignored her every time.

Once, she had shamelessly barged into Grandma Sun’s room, claiming she wanted to take care of the old woman. At first, Grandma Sun didn’t say much to her, but after a short while, her expression darkened, and she had Sun Jiaming throw her out.

Her sister had apparently had the same idea, and she, too, was thrown out by Sun Jiaming. From then on, whenever Sun Jiaming saw the sisters, he would just shut the door. They had absolutely no opportunity to seduce him.

This side of Sun Jiaming left her feeling helpless, and she couldn’t carry out any of the schemes she had in mind.

Gu’er’s eyes were filled with malice. ’This Zhou Mazi is less than human.’

"You’ll report me? I didn’t hit you. You’re not part of my family anymore. I was hitting my own wife, what grounds do you have to report me?"

Zhou Mazi’s eyes were so swollen he could barely open them, yet he was still glaring.

"Even if I can’t report you because I’m not family, I can go to the village committee, I can go to the director of the Women’s Federation and have them report you. Let me tell you something, Zhou Mazi. You beat my mother so badly that it constitutes aggravated assault. You could be sentenced to ten years, at least. You still don’t want to sign? Fine. You can spend the rest of your life in prison."

Initially, Gu’er hadn’t thought of sending Zhou Mazi to prison. If he were incarcerated, there would be no one to look after Zhou Feng’er, Zhou Duo’er, and Zhou Cai. Li Hua was their legal guardian and would be obligated to support them. But in the end, she would just be raising three ungrateful wretches who wouldn’t care for her at all. That’s why Gu’er had originally planned to just leave Zhou Mazi at home with the three kids. As long as her adoptive mother was in the city, she couldn’t care less if those people lived or died.

But now that Zhou Mazi refused to sign and was spouting such nonsense, Gu’er felt he needed to be taught a lesson. She wasn’t just bluffing. He had beaten Li Hua so severely that it was genuinely enough to get him convicted.

"You... you dare... I... OUCH..."

Zhou Mazi didn’t know if Gu’er was telling the truth. He wanted to threaten her, but the moment Dingzi tightened his grip, the pain left him speechless.

"I’ll report him. I can do it!"

To everyone’s surprise, Zhou Feng’er stepped forward. She was actually going to report Zhou Mazi.

All eyes turned to her.

"I can sign the papers. I can also be the one to file the report. We can all testify that our father was the one who beat our mother."

When Zhou Feng’er saw the glare Zhou Mazi shot her way, she flinched, but then the hatred in her heart surged, and she straightened her back again.

Gu’er wasn’t surprised. Zhou Feng’er was a ruthless person. She was capable of instigating Zhou Mei to act against her, and of conspiring with Zhang Da to harm her. Having suffered Zhou Mazi’s abuse, it would be strange if she didn’t hate him. Gu’er figured she had probably suffered even more after she herself had left the Zhou family.

"Zhou Feng’er, how dare you! He’s our father! If he goes to prison, what will happen to the family? Do you never want to come back to your parents’ home again? If you dare do this, I won’t let you in the door!"

A blazing fire burned in Zhou Feng’er’s eyes, and hatred threatened to consume her. She didn’t even spare Zhou Cai a glance.

"Sis."

Zhou Duo’er called out as well, her voice trembling slightly.

Zhou Feng’er didn’t look at her either. Her mind was clearly made up.

"Zhou Feng’er, you money-losing baggage! When I get back, I’m going to sell you off! You just wait! I’ll beat you to death!"

Zhou Mazi cursed furiously. He never imagined Zhou Feng’er would be so bold as to stand up and say she would report him.

"Good. You can be the one to do it, then. It’ll save us a trip back to the village to find someone."

"You cheap thing! I’ll kill you!"

Zhou Mazi struggled to break free and go after Zhou Feng’er.

For some reason, Dingzi loosened his grip, and Zhou Mazi actually managed to break free. Ignoring the pain racking his body, he lunged for Zhou Feng’er. She quickly ran for it. The hallway outside the hospital room descended into chaos, as many patients and nurses watched and whispered among themselves.

Just then, Li Zhi arrived with the doctor. Gu’er shot Dingzi a look, and in a flash, Dingzi was in front of Zhou Mazi again. Zhou Mazi was back in his grasp, unable to move.

Sun Jiaming was very impressed with Dingzi. ’I could have caught Zhou Mazi too, but not that smoothly. I’ll have to learn a few moves from Dingzi in the future so I can protect Gu’er better.’

The doctor frowned. Gu’er stepped forward and said, "Director, I was wondering, can the patient’s daughter sign the consent form?"

Before the doctor could answer Gu’er’s question, Zhou Mazi shouted, "I’ll sign! I’ll sign!"

At that moment, he couldn’t think about anything else. He didn’t want to go to prison; he didn’t want to spend the rest of his life behind bars. There was nothing there—no alcohol, no gambling. Life in there would be worse than death. ’I’ll sign first and figure out the rest later. If I can’t come up with the money, Gu’er definitely won’t just let her mother die. Besides, the house is still there, not that there’s anything valuable in it. As long as I don’t go to prison, anything is negotiable.’

Gu’er glanced at him.

"I’ll sign, I’ll really sign! Gu’er, I’m begging you, please just let me sign."

Zhou Mazi looked like he was about to get on his knees and beg.

"In that case, let the patient’s husband sign," the doctor said, clearing his throat as he looked at Zhou Mazi’s miserable state.

Flanked by Dingzi and Sun Jiaming, Zhou Mazi was escorted away to sign the papers. Zhou Feng’er stood at the doorway of the hospital room, glaring hatefully at Gu’er. There were marks on her face from where Zhou Mazi had hit her, and her hair was a mess. She looked completely disheveled. A moment ago, she had thought Gu’er was really going to report Zhou Mazi, which was why she had stepped forward. She never expected Gu’er was just bluffing. ’What am I supposed to do now? When I go home, is Zhou Mazi going to beat me to death?’ Zhou Feng’er shuddered.

Gu’er could feel Zhou Feng’er’s stare, but she didn’t turn to look. As long as Li Hua was alright, she couldn’t care less what happened to Zhou Feng’er and Zhou Mazi. ’It’d be best if they tear each other apart. That father-daughter pair—neither of them is any good.’
