The Adopted Cannon Fodder Made a Comeback

Grandma Sun looked at the smug expressions on Second Grand-uncle and the others and snorted coldly.

Second Grand-uncle was taken aback and said hurriedly, "How silly of me. I forgot to even greet you, Elder Sister-in-law. How has your health been lately?"

Second Grand-uncle asked about Grandma Sun’s health with a smile.

"Oh, this body of mine? I’m not dying anytime soon, which must be a disappointment for you all."

Grandma Sun shot him a cold glance.

"Heh heh, now why would you say that, Sister-in-law? We all wish you well."

Second Grand-uncle looked awkward. He couldn’t lose his temper at Grandma Sun, so all he could do was force a dry laugh.

Gu’er hadn’t expected Grandma Sun to treat Second Grand-uncle like this, showing him no face whatsoever. And to her surprise, he didn’t even dare to get angry. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

Seeing that Grandma Sun was ignoring him, Second Grand-uncle turned to Third Grand-uncle and the others.

"Now, Third Grand-uncle, and the rest of you. Even if we’re here to support our sister-in-law, we still have to do things by the book, don’t we? And Da Kui... he’s the village chief, after all. Not involving him in this just isn’t right."

Zhou Da Kui’s expression darkened. ’Yes, I’m a junior compared to these old men,’ he thought, ’but I’m the village chief—not just any junior.’ For the Sun Family to resolve this matter without him was a deliberate embarrassment.

Zhou Da Kui repeated what he had said earlier: he was backing Cao Qiu.

Grandma Sun looked at Zhou Da Kui, her dissatisfaction clear.

Zhou Da Kui was slightly taken aback. He looked at Sun Zhuzi, then at Sun Jiaming, and his face darkened.

"Zhuzi wanted to go to the city himself! I didn’t force him," Cao Qiu interjected hastily.

"Jia Ming also wants to stay here of his own free will. Cao Qiu, you’re Jia Ming’s mother, so I don’t want to say too much. You say it’s wrong for Jia Ming to forbid you from interfering in his future marriage, but back when it was you and Zhuzi, did you allow me to interfere?"

Grandma Sun hadn’t wanted to bring it up, hoping to save her daughter-in-law some face. But with Cao Qiu pushing this hard and now trying to deny the past, she couldn’t be blamed for returning the favor.

Cao Qiu’s face flushed crimson, so red it looked like it might bleed. She viciously pinched Sun Zhuzi, causing the corner of his mouth to twitch in pain, but he didn’t dare say a word.

Second Grand-uncle had spoken up quickly. He knew about the incident back then, so he had to change the subject.

"Elder Sister-in-law, that incident was many years ago. Let’s not bring it up. Besides, you haven’t been out much these past few years, so you probably don’t know the situation in the village. Some of these young women... they’re no good. If you really let one into the family, I’m afraid she’d be a menace. If you really want him to marry a village girl, Er Bao’s daughter Meizi is a good choice. She’s a good match for your family. And if the Sun Family and the Zhou family were joined by marriage, wouldn’t our whole village be like one big family? I say we should just have Jia Ming marry Meizi."

"Heh heh. Your words sound prettier than a song."

Grandma Sun gave Second Grand-uncle a scornful smile.

Gu’er glanced at Second Grand-uncle. ’Is that old man talking about me? I haven’t even sorted out my feelings for Sun Jiaming yet, so why does everyone just assume I’m going to marry him?’

’It’s true that I’ve developed feelings for Sun Jiaming. I like him a lot, and I like Grandma Sun, too. But that doesn’t mean I have to marry him.’

’The better Sun Jiaming was, the less she dared to think about it. She didn’t want to have children. Was she really going to let Brother Jia Ming go his whole life without an heir?’

Gu’er shook her head. ’Have I gotten too close to the Sun Family? Should I be keeping my distance? Should I build a house here in the village, or should I move to the city?’

’As long as I avoid that one area, I could rent a place somewhere else, start a small business, and slowly build a life for myself in the city...’

For the first time, Gu’er seriously considered leaving the village. It wasn’t for any other reason than the fear that her feelings for Sun Jiaming would deepen to the point where she couldn’t leave him. Yet, a part of her subconsciously resisted the idea. She didn’t want Sun Jiaming to have to bear the consequences of being with her and not having children. If that was the only future, it was better to just leave.

’If she and Sun Jiaming saw less of each other, their feelings would gradually fade. In a couple of years, Brother Jia Ming could find a good woman, get married, have children... He would probably be very happy.’

As Gu’er thought of this, her heart ached for some reason. ’Is it because I don’t want Brother Jia Ming to marry another woman and have children with her?’

Lost in her own thoughts, Gu’er didn’t notice what anyone was saying. She was snapped back to reality by Grandma Sun’s sudden movement.

She snatched a teacup from the low table and hurled it at Second Grand-uncle.

Second Grand-uncle clearly hadn’t expected Grandma Sun to get physical. Stunned, he was hit squarely.

The teacup fell from Second Grand-uncle’s chest, rolling across the floor with a CLATTER.

A teacup couldn’t really hurt anyone, but it was full of water. Although the water was no longer hot, it splashed all over Second Grand-uncle, leaving him looking quite pathetic.

"Sister-in-law!"

Anger flashed in Second Grand-uncle’s eyes. ’It’s been years since anyone dared to treat me this way! This old woman has absolutely no respect for me!’

"What? You want to hit back? Go on. You lay a finger on me and see what happens."

But Grandma Sun wasn’t afraid in the slightest.

Sun Jiaming took a step forward to stand in front of Second Grand-uncle. His face was grim, his eyes filled with a warning. ’If Second Grand-uncle dares to touch Grandma, I’ll make my move. I don’t care if you’re an elder or not. I’ll beat you first and ask questions later.’

He glanced at the other men, as well. ’If a single one of them makes a move, I don’t care who it is, I’ll throw them all out. Have they all forgotten their place? Coming into my house, waving their seniority around, and telling me what to do. Who the hell do they think they are? Trying to make decisions for me? In their dreams!’

"Your temper hasn’t changed one bit after all these years, Sister-in-law. It’s not like I said anything... Can’t I just drop it?"

Second Grand-uncle mumbled, backing down. Sun Jiaming might be a junior, but he looked like he would actually fight. Besides, if he really did lay a hand on the old woman, he was afraid Third Grand-uncle and the others wouldn’t let it go.

But Grandma Sun just pointed at Second Grand-uncle and cursed, "Didn’t say anything? What else did you want to say? Were you planning on arranging my funeral, too? You’re all just ganging up on me because I’m an old woman who’s stuck in bed and can’t move! Everyone wants to stick their nose in my family’s business. You think you have the right? Why weren’t you all so bold when my husband was alive? See if he wouldn’t have beaten you senseless! For the past few years, you’ve been running wild, bullying people, and I haven’t even bothered to say a word. But today, you come to bully me! I’m not dead yet, and you’re already trying to make decisions for my grandson! Get the hell out of my sight! You’ve all lost your sense of shame! Why don’t you go take a piss and have a good look at yourselves! I’m laying it all out today. From now on, if anyone dares to come before me and boss me around, if anyone dares to come here spouting shit and saying a bad word about Gu’er—Jia Ming, you have my permission to hit them! Slap them right across their shameless faces! I want to see just how thick-skinned they really are!"

Grandma Sun had essentially cursed out Second Grand-uncle and his entire group, leaving them without a shred of dignity.
