The Adopted Cannon Fodder Made a Comeback

"You all dote on her now and don’t want me anymore! You take her side in everything! I’m the extra one here, so you might as well not want me either! Just throw me away!"

Seeing that her own mother, who had always been on her side, was actually scolding her, Lin Sui’er couldn’t take it. Her eyes reddened, and after speaking, she stood up and ran to her room, then shut the door with a SLAM.

"You only have two candies left, so why did you give one to me?"

"Mom said that Eldest Sister didn’t have enough to eat at the other family’s house and that she was beaten and scolded. She told us to be nice to Eldest Sister. When Dad brought the milk candy home, Eldest Sister wasn’t here, so I thought she must have never tried it before. Since I still had some, I gave one to Eldest Sister. Try it, Eldest Sister, it’s really sweet."

As Lin Zheng spoke, he unwrapped the milk candy and popped it into Gu’er’s mouth.

A sweet, milky fragrance filled Gu’er’s mouth. She truly felt the sweetness—not from the candy, but from her younger brother, Lin Zheng.

"Eldest Sister, did you really not have enough to eat at that other family’s house? Did you really get hit?"

Lin Zheng looked up at Gu’er with curiosity in his big eyes.

"Mhm."

Gu’er nodded. That was indeed how it used to be for her.

"Don’t be scared, Eldest Sister. We have food to eat in our family. If you don’t have enough, I’ll give you my share. Mom and Dad are really nice, they don’t hit people."

Lin Zheng comforted Gu’er with his words. ’This eldest sister of mine is so pitiful,’ he thought. ’From now on, I have to be good to her.’

Gu’er gently hugged Lin Zheng.

"Mhm, our family has food. Eldest Sister can eat her fill, and no one will hit Eldest Sister anymore."

Gu’er nodded, her eyes turning a little red.

Lin Shan’s heart was touched. ’It seems my eldest daughter is a soft-hearted person too. It’s so good to see the siblings like this. If only Sui’er were this sensible.’

Chen Fengjiao’s eyes also reddened as she hugged her son and daughter.

"You still feel sorry for her? She came and stole your room! Our mom gave your room to her, so you don’t have your own room anymore. You’ll have to sleep with Mom and Dad. You’re the extra one now! She stole from you, and you’re still nice to her? Are you stupid?"

Gu’er was stunned. She hadn’t expected Lin Zheng to say that. He was actually willing to give his room to her.

"But Eldest Sister is big! She’s too old to live with Mom and Dad. I can."

Lin Zheng didn’t understand why his second sister was saying such things. ’Doesn’t she understand such a simple reason?’

"Alright, stop making a scene. Your sister didn’t ask for Xiao Zheng’s room. She’s staying in your father’s study. What’s this about us not wanting you anymore? You’re a sister too, how can you talk to your little brother like that?"

Chen Fengjiao was a little displeased.

Lin Sui’er, however, looked at Gu’er in disbelief.

"Then where is Dad going to read from now on?"

Lin Sui’er didn’t like Gu’er. No matter what Gu’er did, she felt it was wrong. She felt that Gu’er never should have entered this family’s home.

"That’s enough. Stop being unreasonable. Look at you right now, you’re not even as mature as your little brother. I told you this afternoon that when your eldest sister came home, instead of treating her well, you’ve been constantly finding fault. Your eldest sister isn’t holding it against you, but you need to understand this yourself. You’ve read so many books, don’t you understand basic principles? Lin Shan finished scolding Lin Sui’er.

Lin Sui’er bit her lip.

"You all take her side! She’s the only good one!"

She threw out that sentence and went back to her room again.

Gu’er looked at the door. ’Lin Sui’er is really just a spoiled child. You couldn’t say she’s a truly bad person; after all, she isn’t cunning. If she were really bad, she wouldn’t be so openly hostile toward me. Everything she feels is out in the open, which is actually quite naive. But her personality really needs to change, or she’ll suffer when she goes out into the world. Hopefully, she’ll change as she gets a little older.’

That evening, Gu’er didn’t watch TV. She washed up early and went back to her room. She looked at the books on the bookshelf, but they were all too profound for her, so she put them back down.

After turning off the light, Gu’er lay on the kang, gazing into the dark room. She hadn’t expected her first day in the city to pass just like that.

Her parents’ attitude was about what she had expected. Her father was nice to her. Her mother was eager to compensate her and was also very good to her, though her kindness was mixed with a bit of cautiousness. Lin Sui’er’s attitude was within her expectations as well. What surprised her was Lin Zheng. She never thought she would have such a cute and kind little brother.

Remembering how he had picked out food for her and told her to eat the meat, remembering how he had given her a White Rabbit milk candy, remembering his big, round eyes, Gu’er felt her heart soften.

Gu’er’s lips curved into a smile. She was actually starting to look forward to life in the Lin Family.

Although there haven’t been many monthly tickets these past few days, Xue has decided to release three Chapters today. However, there’s a parent-teacher conference at school at 1 PM, so I have to leave at 12. The second Chapter will be updated after I get back from the school, and the third will be in the evening.
