Chapter 35: Fight Without Thunder

The grounded arena stole Mika’s first spark before the elimination clock finished counting down.

Copper mesh hummed beneath black tiles while discharge rods climbed all four walls.

Ozone vanished into the system, leaving hot dust, rubber armor, and Kasimir’s clove muscle gel in the enclosed air.

Northstar entered from the south with Nia ahead, Jun left, Amara right, and Mika hidden behind the tower shield.

Apex spread across the north line with each fighter occupying a practiced distance from the others.

Kasimir held center with his braced arm, flanked by a spear fighter and a compact woman carrying two hooked blades.

Their fourth member, Pavel Nwosu, knelt beside a grounded control post with a suppression key hanging from his wrist.

[Elimination condition: remove all four combatants or claim the opposing crest]

[Healers remain noncombatant]

[Environmental setting: full electrical suppression]

Mika rubbed her thumb across the regulator strap while another weak thread vanished into the grounded tiles.

"Full suppression means my range dies at skin contact," she said, watching the current disappear from one nail.

"Then skin contact is enough," he replied as Spark Sense opened across the floor.

Gold fracture lines appeared where the copper mesh joined beneath each tile.

The arena swallowed loose current, but every grounded seam still carried it toward the north discharge post.

"Nia, your shield core can hold a charge inside the Aegis layer."

"How much?" she asked as the inner plates opened beneath her forearm.

"One contact strike before the mesh takes it," he replied while tracing the shortest route.

"I would need to touch her shield first," she said as her palm hovered above the Aegis layer.

"Do it behind cover," he replied while marking the first collision point.

His team moved with him, spear fighter taking the right lane while both hooked blades swept toward Jun.

Ryan’s humor disappeared.

"Hold center, mark left, preserve until called," he ordered.

Nia met the brawler six meters from the crest with both boots planted across separate copper tiles.

His good fist struck her shield hard enough to bow its outer plate, yet the Aegis Heart distributed the impact across her stance.

She remained exactly where she had planted.

Jun moved left as one hook cut through the space behind his collar.

His boots pulsed a route between the attacker’s crossing arms, but panic shortened his first step.

"I cannot clear both blades," he called.

"Find one."

The next violet mark landed inside the woman’s rear foot, where her right hook could not reverse without crossing her own wrist.

"Left blade commits!"

The hooked fighter saw a famous striker moving powerless through a grounded arena, then smiled before throwing the committed cut.

Mika stepped inside it.

Her forearm caught the attacker’s wrist while one heel stamped the violet marker.

She drove a shoulder under the woman’s chest, turned, then sent her across the boundary on hip placement alone.

[Apex combatant removed]

The crowd needed one stunned beat before noise hit the glass.

{cupseat44: Wait, she has hands!!!}

The spear fighter struck Nia’s exposed right side while Kasimir kept the shield occupied.

Its padded blade slipped beneath one armor plate, opening a shallow line across her ribs.

Amara moved one step from the healer zone before stopping herself at the line painted across the floor.

"Nine-centimeter cut, no deep route," he said as the blood path appeared through Spark Sense, "leave it."

She watched the blood darken Nia’s undersuit, then kept both hands on her own bracer.

"Preserving," she replied through a jaw held deliberately loose.

He disengaged from the shield and rushed Jun with his injured forearm protected behind one shoulder.

Nia could not turn the tower frame before the brawler cleared its outer edge and entered Jun’s lane.

"Guard," Ryan said as he lifted his left palm.

Gold opened between the scout and the charging brawler for one heartbeat.

The light vanished before becoming a wall, yet one beat stole his balance.

Jun’s boots found the route under the man’s planted heel.

He pivoted behind Kasimir, caught the crest strip at his lower back, then pulled before the brawler recovered.

The Apex crest came free.

It counted as one elimination only if carried across the center line.

Jun ran.

Pavel abandoned the suppression controls to intercept him, while the spear fighter cut off the southern lane.

"Right seam!" Ryan called.

The scout followed the gold fault visible only through Ryan’s pointed finger.

Mika pressed both palms against the Aegis plate as he passed, sending blue current into the layered core without touching the grounded floor.

Nia felt the charge collect behind her forearm and said, "Carrying," as blue light filled the narrow seam around her wrist.

"Two meters forward, release on impact," he said while pointing toward the spear fighter’s planted chest.

The shield struck his chest as its stored current jumped through the contact point, too brief for the copper mesh to steal first.

His muscles locked.

Nia swept his legs with the lower edge, then pushed him across the boundary before the mesh drained the last blue thread.

[Apex combatant removed]

Jun reached the center line with the stolen crest held across his chest instead of trailing behind him.

Kasimir remained.

He stood between Northstar and victory with the brace cracked along his swollen forearm.

Marek shouted from the Apex bench while Amara watched the injury meter broadcast above the arena.

Grade two tendon damage had become grade three while the match display continued presenting him as active.

"Withdraw!" she called.

Kasimir heard her.

His gaze moved toward the public scoreboard showing three teammates removed, then toward Luca behind the glass.

The captain did not signal.

Kasimir tore the broken brace free, exposing the swollen tendon beneath a sleeve already soaked with blood.

"One hit," he said while setting both feet, "fight me without tricks."

Mika stepped from behind the shield with both empty hands visible above her waist.

No current followed her.

Her hair had come loose around one cheek, and sweat darkened the collar beneath her regulator.

"You called teamwork a trick from inside a sponsored arena," she said, flexing empty fingers, "that is actually adorable."

Three joined beneath his rear foot, all carrying suppression current toward Pavel’s abandoned control post.

The brawler had planted exactly where the floor pulled hardest against lightning.

"Rear foot is trapped by the seam," Ryan said as the grounded routes tightened, "he cannot pivot left without lifting."

Mika’s eyes found the heel, then rose to Kasimir’s injured arm.

"He protects right," she said as her weight shifted toward the exposed left side.

"Yes," he replied while tracking the trapped heel.

"Stop giving her my stance!" Kasimir shouted as his good hand closed into a fist.

Ryan went quiet.

Her public smile disappeared, replaced by the focused stillness she used before a private strike.

Kasimir came forward with his good punch leading while his damaged arm remained locked against his ribs.

She gave ground once.

He read weakness and committed harder, rear heel dragging against the grounded seam.

Mika moved on the second step, tapped the injured arm with two fingers, then ducked as his body protected it on instinct.

His left side opened.

No thunder arrived.

She planted her rear foot beside his trapped heel, then drove one bare palm less than twenty centimeters into the center of his chest armor.

Her hips turned, shoulder followed, then every piece of force entered his center without one visible spark.

Air left him in a single broken sound while his good arm folded across the impact point.

The copper seam stopped the turn before the palm strike lifted him off balance.

Mika guided the injured arm rather than wrenching it, turned his falling body, then placed him beyond the line on his back.

[Apex combatant removed]

[Northstar Guild wins]

For half a second, nobody understood that the match had ended.

Mika stood inside the grounded arena with one palm extended and no lightning to explain what she had done.

The national feed replayed the strike in silence, isolating her foot placement, hip turn, open palm, and Kasimir leaving the floor.

The audience rose before the second replay finished, reacting to footwork no sponsor could dismiss as edited lightning.

{ordinarypalm: Celebrity spectacle where???}

Her public smile began, then failed when genuine satisfaction reached her eyes first.

Nia collected the Northstar crest and placed it back against Jun’s chest.

"You kept it," Nia said while pressing the recovered strip flat against his chest.

"I almost did not," he replied as his breathing began to slow.

"Almost is outside the result," she said while releasing it.

Amara entered as soon as the healer boundary switched off.

She knelt beside Kasimir with most bracer cells clear, but kept her hands above his arm.

"I will stabilize the tendon if you consent to withdrawal from today’s remaining matches," she said.

Marek gestured for him to stand without treatment, using the same hand that had fired Amara.

Kasimir looked back at the doctor he had ordered to heal him yesterday.

"My career ranking drops if I withdraw," he said as his attention stayed on the Apex bench.

"Your grip may become permanent damage if you continue," she replied with both palms remaining above the injury.

His good hand closed around the broken brace while the unanswered career cost remained visible across his face.

"Treat it," he said after turning his body away from Marek.

"Do you accept withdrawal?" she asked as the remaining clear cells waited beneath her palm.

The arena cameras held on his face as the withdrawal decision replaced every match statistic around him.

"Yes," he said without looking back toward the sponsor bench.

Gold light passed through her ceramic palm, sending the transferred pain into fourteen percent of one amber cell instead of her nerves.

She stopped when his tendon stabilized, then fitted a rigid support without allowing the clear cells to take another injury.

"Hospital imaging within one hour," she said, "no combat before clearance."

Kasimir sat up slowly.

"You could finish it," he said while testing the rigid support beneath her hand.

"I decide when healing ends," she replied as the amber cell stopped filling.

He stared at the bracer, then lowered his eyes without arguing.

Luca met Northstar inside the exit tunnel as officials escorted Apex’s team away.

His cream suit remained perfect, yet one gold-ringed finger pressed too hard against his opposite palm.

"Good adaptation," he said as cameras gathered, "the grounded setting improved the match."

Mika made a sound through her nose without opening her mouth.

"You switched off my lightning and discovered I can fight," Mika said as ozone returned around her regulator.

"The Cup discovered it," Luca replied while the press microphones shifted toward him.

"You knew," she said as the earlier fan footage remained open on Ryan’s phone.

Luca’s smile stayed polished while his attention moved toward Ryan.

"Some of us watched her before today," he replied without looking away.

Ryan felt the sentence land against the hidden fan archive in his pocket.

Jun noticed the same direction of Luca’s gaze while the old fan record remained open on his tablet.

The scout lowered his tablet against his chest so the live files could not enter another camera angle.

"Your relay camera was above the equipment pavilion yesterday," he said as both heels stayed fixed despite the crowd.

"The Cup owns hundreds of cameras," Luca replied while adjusting one cream cuff.

"That one routed through Apex media," Jun said while locking the tablet.

The captain finished adjusting the cuff without letting his attention touch the hidden tablet again.

"Submit the concern through administration," he replied as his polished expression returned to the press line.

Mika stepped closer, bringing the smell of ozone back into the tunnel despite the arena having swallowed every spark.

"If you have something of mine, post it with your name."

His hazel eyes held hers.

"Careful what you invite."

He walked away with the press following while Mika remained still inside the ozone he left behind.

Ryan unlocked his phone to save the match footage offline.

The @KellerSoles account had already posted Mika’s silent palm strike beside an old clip of the same rear-foot adjustment.

Its caption contained one line beneath the synchronized clips, linking her first lesson to the silent Cup strike.

She learned this movement before the cameras learned her name, long before sponsors could claim ownership of the result.

Mika read it over his arm, looked from the old clip to his face, then down to the phone held too tightly in his good hand.

She plucked it from his fingers and walked toward the private team room without asking permission.
