Chapter 22: No Cameras Means No Cameras

The last spark vanished between Mika’s fingers before the sudden dark could turn into moving shadows.

"Nobody moved," she said from the lower landing, keeping her voice level.

Jun’s palm struck the locked door once before both fingers closed around the handle.

"Light."

"Low and still."

A dim blue thread returned across her knuckles, illuminating four steps without exposing the tunnel below.

He remained beside the cable spool and said, "The city worker is restoring power, until then we have the stairs and the path we used."

"The path ends at a locked door," Jun replied, keeping one hand on the handle.

"The door opens from outside," Ryan said, showing him the failed signal icon.

"That is not a route," the scout said as his thumb dug into the release.

His words arrived too fast, but his hands had stopped pulling the handle.

Nia sat on the lowest step with her collapsed shield across both knees, reducing her size and leaving the upper landing clear.

"What happened in the drainage gate?" she asked while checking one loose strap.

The scout pressed his forehead against the cold metal and closed both eyes against the red light.

"Guild sealed the exit to keep scavengers from following us."

Nobody filled the silence while the red emergency strips buzzed along the concrete walls.

"Their scout feed died below the flood line," he continued, digging one thumbnail into the taped sole of his boot.

His voice flattened as he added, "They kept moving, I lost the return marks, then the water rose."

"Did they come back?" she asked, holding the light steady.

"After the boss."

Ryan felt anger move through the group without anybody giving it a voice or target.

"How long?"

"Two hours nineteen."

’He timed every minute and still became a scout,’ Ryan thought, ’fear made him steal better maps.’

The emergency lights returned in dull red strips and exposed every scratch around the sealed handle.

Jun turned from the door with embarrassment already hardening his face.

"Interview failed."

"The interview found the correct problem," he said, bringing up the eligible support terms on his private screen.

"Same thing."

"Not here."

He explained the growth fund without naming the system, starting with the spending ceiling, personal restriction, consent, and absence of debt.

The applicant listened with both arms folded and his body angled toward the stairwell door.

"You buy me boots, then what?" he asked, watching him instead of the private screen.

"You own boots," he replied, opening both empty hands.

"Guild contract?" he said, shifting his weight away from the lower stairs.

"Separate," Ryan said, closing the private offer screen.

"Livestream rights?" Jun said, glancing at the dark phone.

"Yours, except teammates appear only with their permission," he replied, pointing at the facedown device.

The applicant looked to her for confirmation and waited until she met his eyes.

She raised the dark phone screen and said, "No teammate goes live without consent."

Her thumb counted the boundaries as she added, "No private messages, medical data, underwear, panic attacks, or accidental background nudity."

He glanced at the borrowed shirt collar visible beneath her jacket and remembered the inspector.

"The final category feels targeted."

"It is preventative governance."

The scout studied all three faces before asking, "If I leave tomorrow?"

"You take the boots," Ryan replied, indicating his taped soles.

"If I expose something embarrassing?"

"Accuracy determines my emotional response," he said, straightening one wet cuff.

One corner of Jun’s mouth moved before he hid it.

"I accept Pathfinder Boots under those rules."

[Consent recognized]

[Verified supplier found]

[Item price: $74,000]

Ryan approved the purchase.

The city worker opened the stairwell door twenty seconds later and found four hunters waiting beneath red emergency light.

Jun walked outside first.

He did not leave.

The Pathfinder Boots arrived at Northstar before noon in a graphite case with no visible brand.

Their black fabric reached above the ankle, thin haptic bands circled both heels, and silver route sensors ran beneath flexible soles designed for wet stone.

Jun inspected the serial, opened both heels, checked the battery seals, then compared the invoice to the certified seller listing.

"Seventy-four thousand dollars."

He looked at Ryan as if the number required a hidden condition.

"The seller received everything?" he asked, scrolling through the certification history.

"Paid in full," Ryan replied, opening the certified receipt.

"No financing?" Jun said, enlarging the payment record.

"No debt," he said, keeping the receipt visible.

"No tracker you control?" the scout said, turning the boot toward its heel seal.

Mika turned the left boot upside down and pointed toward its privacy seal.

"The route history belongs to the wearer, guild access requires a manual share, and livestream export defaults off."

Jun checked the setting himself.

’He trusts hardware after opening it and people after proving they cannot open it,’ Ryan thought as the scout resealed the heel, ’honestly, fair.’

She placed four colored bolts across the training floor and said, "Walk the route once with your eyes open."

He crossed the bolts in order while both boots recorded each turn.

She moved two obstacles, switched off the overhead lights, then rotated him three times by the shoulders.

"Now return."

The right heel pulsed forward.

His left answered at the first turn, then both soles warned him before the moved bench.

The scout completed the recorded route without touching an obstacle or missing a single turn.

For several seconds, he remained on the starting mark and stared at the floor.

"Again," he said.

They changed the practice route five times while moving every obstacle between attempts.

He finished each one faster, but speed mattered less than what left his shoulders whenever the boots confirmed home.

He showed him the completed fund receipt and his unchanged personal balance.

"My shoes remain thirty-nine dollars," Ryan said, lifting one scuffed heel.

"Those are office shoes," Jun replied, inspecting the worn sole.

"The monsters have noticed," he said, lowering his foot again.

Nia fitted the heel bands while Mika registered the consent settings on the guild network.

No camera recorded the fitting or stored the haptic routes created during calibration.

The system closed the investment after both privacy seals registered beneath the scout’s profile.

[Investment completed: $74,000]

[Growth pending]

They returned to the tram depot at one.

Jun stood before the second stairwell with both boots resting on the first silver route mark.

He tapped each heel twice.

A pulse traveled from his right foot to his left, recording the surface entrance as his return point.

"Door can close," he said.

The city worker locked it behind them.

His jaw tightened at the sound, but the right heel immediately pulsed once.

Return route confirmed.

He descended.

The lower junctions formed a concrete grid beneath the tram lines, with pipes crossing overhead and black runoff moving through channels beside the walkway.

The scout took point with both heels recording the first municipal marker.

Each turn entered the boots without a camera, signal, or public map, while haptic taps confirmed distance and direction beneath his feet.

Ryan followed with the cable spool braced against one hip and the loose line in hand.

Mika marked standing water through the guild tablet, and Nia tested corroded railings with one armored hand.

At Junction Six, the official map ended against a poured concrete wall.

He crouched before it and ran two fingers along a seam hidden beneath mineral deposits.

"Airflow."

He held one loose thread from the survey cable near the narrow crack.

The loose thread moved inward through airflow too steady to come from solid concrete.

"Tunnel behind it."

She knocked once against the wall and listened with one ear near the mineral crust.

"Hollow, thin cap, older construction behind."

The scout found four disguised bolts beneath the mineral crust.

They removed the panel together and exposed a brick tunnel descending east beyond the municipal grid.

Cold air carried rust, stagnant water, and something faintly sweet from the dark.

He recorded a new return point with two heel taps beside the removed panel.

"This route is not in the city archive."

She angled her light through the opening and said, "Doorghost found a door."

"Tunnel."

"Your brand needs flexibility."

They fed the survey cable behind them through the removed panel before entering the hidden brick tunnel.

Thirty meters inside, the cable tightened around Ryan’s waist, so he stopped just as the tension vanished.

When he pulled the line forward, its end came from the darkness with the copper core exposed and the outer insulation covered in tiny paired bite marks.

Something clicked inside the wall beside Jun’s shoulder with the clean sound of metal striking metal.

Then a second click answered from beneath the flooded bricks.
