The missing clipboard returned twelve minutes later without the person who had taken it.
Ryan found it on the rear loading rail beneath an empty coffee cup, with the inspection checklist intact and a new floor plan drawn across the cardboard back.
Every public exit had been measured to the nearest centimeter and marked with a directional arrow.
The unknown artist had added a service hatch behind the old sound booth and two blind corners beside the workshop.
One red circle surrounded the damaged upstairs partition with the confidence of somebody expecting another impact.
At the bottom of the board, cramped handwriting delivered the only written explanation the thief had provided:
**pretty sure this wall is losing**
Mika read over his shoulder while fastening his silver tie around her own collar.
"Your criminal has opinions," she said, pulling his tie through the wrong side of its knot.
"My criminal understands load paths," he replied, correcting the loop with two fingers.
"You sound proud," she said, watching one side of his mouth escape.
"I sound professionally threatened."
Nia took the clipboard from him, studied the red circle, then looked toward the stairs.
"The measurement is correct."
"Please stop encouraging the burglar," he said, following a thin gold trace that ended at the empty service hatch.
Inspector Arvanitis appeared behind them with her city tablet tucked against one elbow.
"If the intruder identified an unregistered exit, I require the location."
He pointed toward the sound booth.
She opened the hatch, measured its width, checked the rusted release, then added it to the official evacuation plan without asking who had discovered it.
"It qualifies as emergency egress after the latch is replaced."
She leaned close to him and whispered, "The burglar increased our legal occupancy."
"I remain conflicted."
The inspector heard both of them and said, "Remain conflicted away from my measurements."
Nia had already carried a spare sheet of laminated board upstairs.
The forge drill started above them while Thessaly inspected the workshop ventilation, electrical isolation, and shield-testing clearance.
She found one unlabeled breaker, two chairs blocking a secondary path, and a box of donated fireworks beneath the bar.
Mika stared at the sealed box as if strangers had delivered it through a personal betrayal.
"Those are not ours," she said, pointing both hands toward the sealed box.
"They are inside your building," the inspector replied, holding her tablet above them.
"The internet gets excited," Mika said, reading the shipping label upside down.
"The internet does not hold a premises license."
Ryan picked up the box and read the shipping label.
**For the grand opening, please aim away from people**
’Someone considered that instruction complete,’ he thought while carrying the box outside, ’civilization remains conditional.’
He locked the explosives outside, labeled the breaker, and moved both chairs while the upstairs drill continued without pause.
The damaged panel came down the stairs in four rectangular pieces carried beneath one broad arm.
She followed with plaster dust covering her forge apron and said, "Partition repaired."
Thessaly checked the clock on her tablet while the drill upstairs fell silent.
"Nine minutes," she said, turning the screen toward the repair time.
"It was decorative," Nia replied, stacking the broken pieces beside the loading rail.
"So was the damage," the inspector said, returning the tablet beneath her arm.
The inspector returned upstairs.
Ryan stayed three steps behind her so nobody could accuse him of discovering another wall first.
The replacement board sat straight inside the frame, its trim matched the neighboring panel, and both orange tape marks had been removed from the floor.
She pressed one palm against the repair.
Nothing shifted.
Her pen added the final check before she turned toward all three founders.
"Fire compliance passed, structural use passed, residential declaration accepted, accessible capacity twenty-four."
Mika caught Ryan’s hand beside her thigh, hidden from the inspector by his jacket.
Her fingers squeezed once before disappearing from his hand as the inspector turned.
The city tablet displayed one remaining blue approval button beneath the completed checklist.
**Approve Northstar Guild premises**
Thessaly pressed the approval button with the blunt end of her silver pen.
Every donated phone downstairs chimed at once and filled the nightclub with the same bright note.
The hot-pink ceiling sign switched on by itself while the city portal replaced Northstar’s provisional crest.
A silver registered mark appeared onscreen as a legal plaque began printing behind the recovered bar.
Ryan stared at the registration confirmation while the system opened beside it above the recovered bar.
[Guild environment established]
[Registered entity: Northstar Guild]
[Eligible investments may now support verified member growth]
[Personal spending restriction unchanged]
His personal account remained visible through the transparent screen beside the unlimited growth fund.
**Available balance: $900.17**
’Infinite fund, legal guild, nine hundred dollars for me,’ he thought as the machine hummed, ’success preserved the joke.’
Mika released his hidden hand, crossed the front room, and reached the warm metal first.
She lifted the registration plate from the output tray, read every line, then held it where the condemnation notice had hung two days earlier.
The old condemnation notice had left screw holes that matched the new plate without adjustment.
Nia brought the correct driver from her forge bench without being asked or looking away from the wall.
Ryan held the legal marker level while Mika tightened the first screw and Nia secured the second.
**Northstar Guild, premises capacity 24, registration status active**
The front windows filled with familiar faces before the final screw seated against the metal.
Someone outside had been refreshing the public registry and sharing every update with the waiting crowd.
The teenager with the stationery sign slapped both hands against the glass while a delivery driver lifted another stack of shelves.
Behind him, the noodle-shop owner arrived carrying a steel pot that required two employees.
Mika unlocked the entrance.
Noise rushed in with wet coats, camera shutters, garlic broth, and the hot smell of printer ink.
"No fireworks!" he called as the first crowd crossed the threshold.
Three people lowered suspicious paper bags and exchanged the guilty looks of children caught near an open drawer.
She pointed toward the exterior cage and said, "There."
Every suspicious bag changed direction before its owner crossed the bright floor line.
Inspector Arvanitis capped her silver pen while strangers surrounded the plaque.
"Your premises are approved for a twelve-month license, subject to incident reporting and quarterly inspection."
He pulled his attention from the crowd and said, "Thank you."
"Do not make gratitude sound like surprise," she replied, sliding the tablet beneath one arm.
"I prepared for another six meters," he said, glancing toward the repaired upstairs wall.
"You were billed for eight," she replied, capping the silver pen.
She turned toward the entrance, paused beside Mika, and adjusted the borrowed tie until its loose end could not catch another handle.
"Egress risk," the inspector said before walking into the rain.
Mika touched the corrected knot and watched her leave through the newly compliant front door.
"I think she likes me," she said, smoothing the rescued tie against her shirt.
"She saved your life from fabric," he replied, accepting hot broth from the noodle-shop owner.
"Intimate by city standards," she said, stealing his spoon before he could taste anything.
The first membership applications reached Ryan before he found another serving of broth.
A C-rank healer wanted guaranteed raid shares.
Two unranked twins applied as a single person and refused to identify which signature belonged to whom.
One former Apex intern submitted a nine-page cover letter with three separate fonts.
He created a clipboard labeled **Applicants**, placed it beside the plaque, and turned away for one spoonful of broth.
The clipboard vanished.
This time, he saw the thief.
A slim young man in a gray hood slipped behind the crowd with the board pressed against his chest.
He looked barely twenty, with straight black hair falling into watchful brown eyes and a narrow face made sharper by lack of sleep.
Worn route boots carried three repairs made from black electrical tape.
No weapon showed beneath his oversized jacket or inside either loose sleeve.
Spark Sense wrapped his narrow frame in bright gold from his taped boots to his hood.
[Potential found]
[Verified growth need: Safe route access]
Ryan followed the stranger through the crowd without calling security or drawing attention to the stolen board.
The stranger checked the front door, counted steps to the loading rail, then drew two lines on the application sheet while moving toward the old sound booth.
He never looked at the cameras mounted beside the bar or above the entrance.
He looked at every exit twice and checked whether the crowd obstructed each route.
’Doorghost,’ Ryan thought as the young man tested the newly registered service hatch, ’the headache has acquired shoes.’
She appeared beside him with her bowl still in one hand and asked, "Do we stop him?"
"I want to see where he goes."
The hooded scout opened the hatch, looked directly at them for the first time, and froze with the stolen clipboard beneath one arm.
His gaze moved to the front entrance, the loading rail, then the stairs.
Three escape routes.
He raised his spoon and said, "The applications belong inside the building."
The stranger backed through the hatch and replied, "Your exit map was wrong."
Then he disappeared into the rain with Northstar’s first applicant list.
