Chapter 34: Four Jobs, Four Voices

Blue current ate Jun’s third route marker before Northstar’s first Cup rehearsal survived its opening minute.

The practice hall smelled of rubber mats, ozone, and the garlic noodles Kasimir Dube was eating behind Apex’s glass partition.

Mika stood inside the mock arena with blue current snapping between her palms while Jun stared at a melted violet beacon.

"The marker was inside my line," she said while a blue thread died between two fingers.

"The route changed after you started moving," he replied as his heel pulsed against a path nobody else could see.

"Then tell me before I fire," she said as one hand indicated the ruined beacon.

"I did," he replied while his eyes stayed on the melted violet shell.

"You whispered," she said as her regulator gave one tired click.

"You were producing thunder indoors," he replied while pushing his voice above the fading echo.

Amara capped a bottle before either could continue, placing it between them like the smallest available barrier.

"Both of you stop," she said while the new bracer rested across her knees, "his fear is information, your lightning is also information."

Mika turned toward her with one eyebrow raised while residual sparks crawled back beneath her regulator strap.

"My power is the part that defeats people," she replied as her attention remained on the Calyx cells.

"Your power just defeated twelve thousand dollars of rented equipment," Amara said while pointing at the melted route shell.

Nia lifted a padded barrier panel and inspected the black streak crossing its center.

"The invoice says fourteen thousand," she said while turning the scorched panel toward them.

Ryan’s stomach performed the exact motion it used when an account balance loaded slowly.

Cup insurance covered accidental practice damage after a four-thousand-dollar deductible, which meant one bad rehearsal could eat their first paid mission.

Amara had registered as Northstar’s independent Cup medic, leaving the thirty-day membership form unsigned until she chose more than one tournament.

He opened his mouth, saw Mika watching, then closed the invoice without mentioning it.

’I can save lives or mention a deductible,’ he thought, ’apparently these are competing instincts.’

"Reset," he said as he placed four unbroken markers across the mat, "this time, nobody solves another person’s job."

Nia lowered the barrier panel.

"Explain," she said while setting the panel upright against her shoulder.

"You hold the threat," he said, pointing to the center lane, "Jun finds the route, Amara preserves the team, Mika ends the fight."

Mika folded both arms beneath the regulator and said, "Those verbs are not a strategy."

"They are if everyone stops auditioning for each role," he replied while reducing the plan to four colored lanes.

Jun looked at the burned marker while his left heel tested a replacement route around its blackened remains.

"I was trying to give her a full attack path," he said as both hands tightened around the replacement beacon.

"Find the safe opening, then let her choose the attack," he replied while reducing the overlay to one turn.

Amara tapped the first clear amber cell and said, "Preserve does not mean erase every injury."

"Correct, you decide what can wait," he replied while moving her icon away from the contact line.

Nia moved the barrier into the center lane and asked, "What does Ryan do?"

"Annoyingly, I repeat the instructions," Ryan replied while straightening four untouched markers.

One corner of her mouth lost discipline for less than a second.

They reset with a mechanical practice beast at the far end of the hall.

It carried padded arms, two light cannons, and a scoring core behind its sternum.

Jun crouched beside the start line while his route display mapped the moving panels.

"Left opens in six," he said, louder this time, "center panel turns after the second shot."

Nia entered first.

The opening cannon struck her shield, sending a blunt vibration through the floor.

She held the center lane without chasing the machine when it rolled right.

"Find," Ryan called.

Jun placed one violet marker beside her boot, then moved before the second shot crossed his route.

The panel rotated exactly where he predicted, opening a narrow lane behind the machine’s padded right arm.

Mika started forward.

Amara caught her regulator strap with two fingers before the unstable pathway could snap beneath Mika’s collar.

"Wait," she said while the Calyx bracer measured the striker’s accelerating pulse.

Blue current broke across the striker’s shoulder as she turned.

"I have the opening," Mika replied as both feet remained aimed toward the scoring core.

"Your left pathway skipped," the healer said while two fingers stayed against the regulator strap.

"It always skips," she replied as frustration flattened the line of her mouth.

"Then it can skip while you stand here," Amara said without releasing the damaged route.

Mika stared at the fingers on her strap, public expression gone while frustration put both hands at her sides.

The practice beast fired again.

Nia absorbed the shot, boot sliding half a meter without abandoning the lane.

Jun’s next marker appeared beneath the machine after his boots recalculated around Nia’s planted shield.

"Opening repeats in four!" he called as the violet route brightened beneath the scoring core.

Amara released the strap only after the regulator route settled and said, "Now."

Mika moved without a full discharge, carrying one contained blue thread behind the tower frame.

She crossed behind the shield, stepped on Jun’s violet mark, then drove one contained arc into the scoring core.

The practice beast shut down while every violet marker survived beneath its collapsed padded arms.

Nia checked one dent before saying, "Acceptable."

Mika looked toward the silent machine and pressed her lips flat.

"I hated every second before the last one," Mika said as her hand returned to the regulator strap.

"That is teamwork," Jun replied, though his eyes stayed on the surviving route beacon.

{bronzeobserver: Northstar unlocked voice chat}

Amara read the scattered comment on the hall screen while the Cup camera remained bright above the practice lane.

"Who authorized this camera?" she asked as one amber cell reflected its red recording light.

"Cup default," Mika said as she located its lens, "we can disable practice broadcast."

Jun reached the access control first, taking the shortest route around the rented panels without crossing the live lane.

"Off," he said after the indicator died.

His shoulders lowered once the viewer count disappeared, making the difference between promised secrecy and actual protection visible.

Ryan ran the rehearsal again with the lanes reversed, forcing every role to survive an unfamiliar entrance angle.

This time Jun overexplained every turn until Mika stopped beside a violet marker.

"One instruction," she said, touching her regulator strap instead of snapping, "which way?"

He swallowed.

"Right, then wait for Nia."

She obeyed.

The restraint cost her more than the movement, visible in the current twitching around her left thumbnail.

Nia held the beast two beats longer, creating a clean angle that required no correction.

Amara allowed one bruised shoulder to remain untreated until the machine went dark.

Then she reduced the swelling with nine percent of one amber cell.

"Preserve," she said as the gold light faded, "not indulge."

"That sounded personal," Mika replied.

"It became personal around the third destroyed marker."

Jun laughed before realizing nobody was laughing at him, then let the sound remain instead of swallowing it.

The third rehearsal took forty-one seconds, twelve faster than the first.

The fourth rehearsal took thirty-eight seconds without equipment damage, transferred pain, or a single crossed instruction.

Ryan saved the footage offline, then caught himself replaying one successful exchange before the team had finished removing their bands.

Everyone rewatched their rare competence while claiming to review mistakes.

He felt seen by his own bad habit while everybody else pretended their replay had a tactical purpose.

Cup staff arrived to escort them toward the elimination arena.

At the corridor junction, Apex’s favored team waited beneath gold sponsor lights.

Kasimir flexed his braced forearm beside three teammates whose uniforms carried more logos than Northstar owned furniture.

The man standing ahead of them wore no combat gear.

Luca Moretti was thirty, lean through the waist with swimmer’s shoulders beneath a cream suit tailored close to his chest.

Black curls fell across an olive forehead, while a trimmed beard framed a wide mouth built for cameras.

He wore gold rings on two fingers and white shoes untouched by the wet arena floors.

A thin scar crossed the bridge of his straight nose, disappearing beneath one sharp cheekbone.

Ryan recognized Apex’s public captain before the crowd beyond the tunnel began chanting his first name.

Luca’s hazel eyes moved across Northstar in order: shield, boots, bracer, regulator, then Ryan’s silver toe.

"Congratulations on Bronze," he said as his expression reached every camera at once, "Apex regrets what one city employee chose to do."

Mika angled her good side toward the same lenses while her private reaction cooled behind the public mask.

"Your apology already used that sentence," she said as one hand indicated the gold sponsor wall.

"Consistency matters," Luca replied while the polished expression held across every active lens.

"Accountability usually helps," she said as the public smile sharpened without reaching her eyes.

His mouth remained fixed through the accusation, revealing how carefully the answer had been rehearsed.

’She still leads with the chin before a public strike,’ Luca thought, ’camera three is live, Kasimir looks angry, fix that later.’

He turned toward Amara while the press cameras followed the movement away from Mika.

"Doctor, yesterday was unfortunate," he said while one gold-ringed hand opened toward Amara.

She checked the Cup clock rather than his face, making the remaining rehearsal time more important than his apology.

"Yesterday was documented," she replied without granting him her attention.

"Your place remains available after the tournament," he said as the open hand remained between them.

"You fired me," she replied while the bracer stayed visible across her forearm.

"Marek acted under pressure," Luca said as his attention flicked toward the waiting press.

"He used complete sentences," she replied while stepping around the offered hand.

Nia’s small exhale sounded suspiciously like amusement while she remained seated beneath the shield harness.

An arena technician hurried between the teams with a settings tablet already open to the environmental selection page.

Luca stopped him by touching one corner of the screen before the official could reach Northstar.

"Our team requests environmental option seven," he said, "both captains approved variable conditions."

Ryan read the option before the technician turned the display away, catching the hidden selection through its reflection on one white sleeve.

Grounded arena.

Copper mesh beneath every tile, discharge rods along each wall, and a suppression field tuned to lightning output.

Mika saw the setting reflected in his eyes before the technician could hide the selected option.

Her fingers went still around the regulator strap while the arena doors separated behind Luca.

"That environment was not in the practice draw," Ryan said while blocking the technician’s path toward the arena.

Luca removed his hand from the tablet after the environmental change received its final approval.

"National competition rewards adaptable guilds," he replied as the copper mesh brightened beyond the doors.

The technician submitted the change while the arena doors opened on a floor built to swallow every spark Mika produced.
